The major portion of the endoneurial lipids is found in myelin. Since perineurial cells differ morphologically from endoneurial cell components, we attempted to determine whether these morphological differences also extended to a difference in fatty acid (FA) composition. Under normal circumstances, unsaturated FAs are more abundant than saturated ones (55-60% of total FAs) in endoneurium and perineurium. A characteristic biochemical difference between these two structures lies in the distribution of linoleic acid (C18:2(n-6)) which represents 20% of total FAs in perineurium and only 2% in end

In 20 diabetic inpatients with type IIb, III, IV and V hyperlipoproteinemia (HPL) the triglyceride fatty acid pattern (TFAP) of serum, adipose tissue and liver biopsy specimens before and after one year of clofibrate treatment has been determined by gas-liquid chromatography. Compared to previous results which revealed a correlation between fat droplet size and the TFAP in liver parenchyma cells, remarkable changes were observed after long-term therapy. In adipose tissue, only linoleic acid increased significantly from 8.6 to 11.3%. In serum, myristic and palmitic acid decreased, whereas linol

The principal objective of this investigation was to examine the omega-hydroxyacid derivatives in the cornified layer of human skin. Toward this end, sunburn peelings were collected, and the lipids were extracted with chloroform/methanol. Comparison with authentic standards by thin layer chromatography (TLC) indicated the presence of both N-(omega-acyloxy)acylsphingosine (acylceramide) and omega-acyloxy fatty acid (acyl acid), which accounted for 1.7% and 2.0% of the total lipid, respectively, as estimated by photodensitometry of the charred chromatograms. Each of these lipids was isolated by

Presently, there is an increasing shift towards the utilization of natural antioxidants and compounds with protective attributes for fatty acids in order to replace synthetic counterparts that may pose health risks. This transition aligns with the growing emphasis on promoting healthy and organic food choices. Essential oils stand out in this context due to scientific validations of their antioxidant properties. There are few published research results concerning changes in the fatty acid composition in model systems with the addition of essential oils. This study aims to investigate the impac

For decades it has been postulated that the main environmental factor for coronary heart disease (CHD) was the intake of saturated fatty acids (SFA). Nevertheless, confirmation of the role of SFA in CHD through intervention trials has been disappointing. It was only when the diet was enriched in n-3 fatty acids that CHD was significantly prevented, especially cardiac death. In addition to n-3 fatty acids, many other foodstuffs or nutrients such as fibers, antioxidants, folic acid, calcium and even alcohol contribute to prevent CHD. Thus the relationship between diet and CHD morbidity and morta

cis-Unsaturated fatty acids stimulate release of superoxide (O-2) by human neutrophils (Badwey, J. A., Curnutte, J. T., Robinson, J. M., Berde, C. B., Karnovsky, M. J., and Karnovsky, M. L. (1984) J. Biol. Chem. 259, 7870-7877). The rate of O-2 release due to arachidonate (105 +/- 24 S.D., nmol of O-2/min/10(7) cells) was comparable to optimal values obtained with other stimuli. Antagonists of calcium-binding proteins (i.e. phenothiazines, naphthalene sulfonamides) inhibited the release of O-2 in a fashion compatible with the involvement of calmodulin in these phenomena. This study investigated lipid oxidation and flavor evolution during low-salt wet-marinated fermentation of golden pomfret, focusing on the relationship between fatty acid transformation and volatile flavor formation. TBARS values increased significantly (P < 0.05), whereas POV initially increased and subsequently decreased, indicating the formation and decomposition of lipid hydroperoxides. Meanwhile, SFA increased significantly (P < 0.05), whereas MUFA and PUFA decreased significantly (P < 0.05), suggesting preferential degradation of unsaturated fatty acids during fermentation. These changes

This report describes a new disorder resembling hereditary tyrosinemia (HT) but differing from it in several respects. Similarities include failure to thrive with hypoproteinemia, micronodular cirrhosis, alpha-fetoprotein positive hepatocellular carcinoma, renal Fanconi syndrome with renal tubular ectasia, hypermethioninemia, and hypoglycemia associated with islet cell hyperplasia. However, the tyrosine metabolic pathway was intact. Unique findings include optic atrophy, cerebellar degeneration, and exocrine pancreatic hypoplasia. Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) status was evaluated in the s

Thirty-five infants weighing less than 1500 g at birth were fed four commercial formulas (A-D) varying in polyunsaturated fatty acid composition (32 per cent linoleic acid in A and B and 12 per cent linoleic acid in C and D) and in iron content (smaller than 1.0 in A and B; 12 to 12 mg per liter in B and D). Infants receiving formula B showed significantly lower hemoglobins (p smaller than 0.01) and higher reticulocyte counts (p smaller than 0.005) than infants fed the other three formulas. Infants receiving the two formulas with higher concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids (A and B) showe

OBJECTIVE: Although moderate physical exercise improves outcomes in pulmonary diseases such as acute lung injury (ALI), the underlying mechanisms, particularly those involving metabolic reprogramming, remain poorly defined. We investigated the impact of aerobic exercise (AE) pretreatment on metabolic pathways, inflammatory responses, and survival in ALI.
METHODS: ALI model mice were induced through intratracheal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) after a 4-week AE protocol. Key assessments included histopathological evaluation, cytokine quantification, survival analysis, and serum metabolomic profiling

The fatty acid (FA) composition of the main plasma lipids was analysed in eight well-nourished, generally healthy Nigerian children aged 14.1 +/- 7.2 months and in 17 malnourished children (8 marasmus, 9 kwashiorkor) aged 14.6 +/- 3.8 months within the first 2 days of admission at the Dept. of Child Health, University of Benin. In comparison to the control group, the malnourished children showed a marked decrease of polyunsaturated FA with low linoleic acid, mainly in sterol esters (STE), and severely reduced linoleic acid metabolites, including arachidonic acid, in all lipid fractions. omega-

This review is aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the physicochemical properties and extraction processes of red palm oil, its nutritional properties and applications in food. Crude palm oil is firstly extracted from the fruit mesocarp and processed into red palm oil using pre-treatment of crude palm oil, with deacidification steps, and deodorization via short-path distillation. These processes help to retain β-carotene and vitamin E in red palm oil. Palmitic, stearic and myristic acids are the saturated fatty acids in red palm oil, while the unsaturated fatty acids are oleic, linole

Intrarectal instillations of the fatty acids (FA), lauric, linoleic or oleic acids induce inflammation and superficial lysis of the colon epithelium. This reaction is followed by increases in colonic mitotic activity and the number of cells engaged in DNA synthesis in compensatory regeneration for the cells that were lost. This explains, in part, the promotional effect of dietary fat in carcinogenesis. Concomitant oral administration of calcium salts, as CaCO3, largely reduced the mitogenic effects of fatty acids on colon epithelium, presumably by forming biologically inert calcium soaps. Calc

Neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Sjögren-Larsson syndrome, Reye's syndrome, and Refsum's syndrome (herediopathica atactica polyneuroformis), and many others afflict millions of persons yearly and have no successful treatment available. A common aspect of these diseases appears to be a lipid imbalance involving the essential fatty acids (EFA), linoleic and linolenic, and trace fatty acids which result from faulty lipid metabolism. It is proposed that treatments for these diseases should be sought through diet and metabolic enzymes rather than drugs.

The oxidative pathway of dopamine metabolism in the human brain leads to formation and accumulation of neuromelanin in the cytoplasm of most nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. The physiological significance of neuromelanin and its contribution to the neurodegenerative processes underlying Parkinson's disease are still controversial. The effect of model neuromelanins on Fe(II)/ascorbate-induced lipid peroxidation in micelles of linoleic acid and in lecithin liposomes was determined. Synthetic neuromelanins were obtained from dopamine (DA), 5-S-cysteinyldopamine (CysDA) or from equimolar mixtur

A study was made of the effect of pyridoxine deficiency on the fatty acids of liver and plasma in rats fed diets containing 1, 10, or 20% fat. Both ad libitum-fed and pair-fed control rats were used. In pyridoxine deficiency, arachidonic acid decreased with a concomitant increase in linoleic acid. Incubation of liver slices with [1-14C]acetate showed no significant alteration of fatty acid synthesis in pyridoxine-deficient rats fed 1 or 10% fat when compared with the ad libitum-fed control rats, but revealed a marked increase in cholesterogenesis compared with either control group. Incubations

BACKGROUND: Hepatic mitochondrial dysfunction is a major cause of fat accumulation in the liver. Individuals with fatty liver conditions have hepatic mitochondrial structural abnormalities and a switch in the side chain composition of the mitochondrial phospholipid, cardiolipin, from poly- to monounsaturated fatty acids. Linoleic acid (LA), an essential dietary fatty acid, is required to remodel nascent cardiolipin (CL) to its tetralinoleoyl cardiolipin (L4CL, CL with 4 LA side chains) form, which is integral for mitochondrial membrane structure and function to promote fatty acid oxidation. It

In order to understand the mechanisms by which fatty acids are taken up by the placenta, the uptake of oleic, linoleic, arachidonic, and docosahexaenoic acids by cultured human placental choriocarcinoma (BeWo) cells was examined. Fatty acid uptake by BeWo cells was temperature-dependent and exhibited saturable kinetics. Oleic acid was taken up least and docosahexaenoic acid most by these cells. Moreover, competitive studies of fatty acid uptake by BeWo cells also indicated preferential uptake compared with oleic acid in the order of docosahexaenoic acid, arachidonic acid, and linoleic acid. Plasma fatty acid profiles of 33 critically ill surgical patients receiving fat-free parenteral nutrition were examined at weekly intervals up to 28 days. While plasma total fatty acid concentration remained relatively constant and within the normal range, marked compositional alterations were apparent. Levels of linoleate (18:2 omega 6), the major essential fatty acid in man, fell below normal values (754 +/- 259 micrograms/ml) in 67 percent of patients within 1 week after cessation of oral intake. Decreases in other omega 6 unsaturated fatty acids, derived from linoleate, were also apparent.

Stearic acid increased Bcl-2 expression in PCMDS, whereas oleic and linoleic acids had no effects. In contrast, α-linolenic acid decreased the proliferation and the survival of CML cell lines as well as BCL-2 and OB-R expression. The effect of α-linolenic acids seemed to be due to PI3K pathway and Bcl-2 inhibition. Leptin producti …
