Over the past several years there has been great interest in the potential role of laser/light-based treatments for male and female pattern hair loss. Despite aggressive marketing and centers claiming great success in the treatment of hair loss there is little scientific data supporting laser/light sources in hair loss. This paper is a consensus of hair loss experts on the current scientific data, mechanisms of action, safety, protocols and recommendations regarding laser/light treatment for hair loss. The authors believe that, while seemingly safe, there are no controlled, peer-reviewed studi

The development of selective photothermolysis has enabled removal of targets such as melanin. Both lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL) sources have been used in the treatment of pigmented lesions, however careful selection is important to ensure success. This is especially true in darker skinned individuals where the risk of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is high. The advent of the Q-switched laser, IPL, and now fractional photothermolysis (Fraxel, Reliant Technologies) offers a variety of ways to treat epidermal and dermal pigmentary disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT), 650-nm wavelength, on acute inflammatory pleurisy.
BACKGROUND DATA: There is only scattered evidence of anti-inflammatory effects from LLLT and dosage characteristics, and the effect on pleurisy inflammation has yet to be investigated.
METHODS: A classical experimental model of pleurisy was used in a sample of 40 Balb male mice, randomly divided into five groups. Inflammation was induced by carrageenan (0.5 mg/cavity) administered by intrathoracic injections. Four groups received the inflammatory agent, and o

BACKGROUND: Topical antibiotics, isotretinoin or systemic antibiotics are usually used for acne therapy. However, isotretinoin cannot be used during pregnancy because it can cause significant birth defects while systemic antibiotics can have adverse side effects such as gastrointestinal irritation, photosensitivity and tetracycline sensitivity. Describe here is a high-intensity, narrow-band, blue light (ClearLight) system, and its therapeutic clinical effect is investigated on acne using cutaneous measurements, bacterial observations and ultrastructural changes.

OBJECTIVE: Hard-to-heal (chronic) wounds constitute a major healthcare problem and a financial burden. Traditional wound care methods mostly fail to achieve complete or prompt healing. Additional biochemical or physical therapies for wound modulation are almost invariably required.
METHOD: A literature review was conducted to explore the accumulated evidence about improved hard-to-heal wound healing with photobiomodulation (PBM) and electrostimulation (ES), and to analyse the clinical application of these two alternative therapeutic modalities.
RESULTS: The literature search yielded a limite

BACKGROUND: A new dual-wavelength, high-energy, solid-state laser incorporating both 532 and 1064 nm wavelengths was developed with cryogen spray cooling and the unique ability to deliver three types of pulse structures including single pulses of a specific pulse-duration or pulses composed of a train of subpulses in the millisecond or microsecond domain with an intervening delay over the selected pulse-duration. We investigate the efficacy of this laser using all three pulse structures and the 532 nm wavelength for treating rosacea.
METHODS: Twenty-one subjects were enrolled in this IRB-appr

Although patients with refractory melasma have been treated using various methods, there is still no precise definition or summary of the therapies. To define refractory melasma and conduct a review of the treatments, we searched for relevant publications in PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, and a total of 35 references were obtained. Refractory melasma can be roughly defined as an ineffective treatment for melasma, including topical bleaching agents, chemical peels, laser therapy, microdermabrasion for more than six months, or chemical peels treated more than six times. Keloids are thickened raised scars that develop due to injury and grow beyond the boundaries of their original wound, mostly affecting individuals with skin of color. This review explores the use of energy-based devices to treat keloids, both using laser monotherapy and in combination with other drugs. Laser therapy alone has shown efficacy in treating keloids. Combination laser therapy has better keloid reduction when administered with steroids, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and verapamil. However, monotherapy has had less adverse reactions including dermal atrophy and local pain. Therefore, physici
