INTRODUCTION: Secondary lymphedema (SLE) is a chronic and debilitating condition that frequently arises following cancer treatments, particularly in breast cancer patients. Despite its increasing global prevalence and impact on patients' quality of life, there remains no effective pharmacological treatment for SLE. Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE), a compound known for treating venous insufficiency, is hypothesized to enhance lymphatic function and may offer therapeutic value for managing SLE. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of GSPE in a rat model of secondary lymphedema.

Lymphedema is a chronic progressive edematous disease that in the United States is most commonly related to malignancy and its treatment. Lymphaticovenular anastomosis is a recently introduced microsurgical treatment option for lymphedema that requires the identification and mapping of individual lymphatic channels. While nuclear medicine lymphoscintigraphy has been the primary imaging modality performed to evaluate suspected lymphedema, lymphoscintigraphy does not provide the spatial information necessary for presurgical planning. High-resolution dynamic 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ca

Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within ventricles and subarachnoid space (SAS) as a result of disturbances in secretion or absorption procedures. It is believed that arachnoid villi cells, which are microscopic projections of pia-arachnoid mater that extend into venous channels in sagittal sinus, are the main sites for CSF absorption, but it is tempting to speculate that a significant portion of CSF is removed from the SAS by nasal lymphatic vessels around olfactory nerve. Thus, in this paper, we propose an analytical model of CSF-lymphatic-blood circulat

BACKGROUND: In patients with chronic venous insufficiency, microangiopathy of blood and lymph capillaries caused by venous hypertension plays a major role in the development of venous ulceration. Conservative treatment of venous leg ulcers often fails, and split-skin grafting is sometimes performed.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the microcirculation and especially the regeneration and function of lymphatic vessels in skin grafts in patients with chronic venous insufficiency.
METHODS: The microcirculation of 15 split-skin grafts was studied by fluorescence microlymphography and measurement of transc

Diffuse lymphangiomatosis is a rare disorder characterized by abnormal proliferation of lymphatic channels. It can involve just one organ or multiple organs, such as liver, spleen, lungs, and bone. This disorder generally presents in children and young adults, but in rare cases, patients first present with symptoms in adulthood. Here, we describe a 48-year-old HIV-positive man who presented with shortness of breath. Computed tomography scan revealed a large right-sided pleural effusion and a heterogeneously enhancing liver. Thoracentesis demonstrated a chylous effusion and subsequent liver bio

An immunologic study was made on 170 epileptic patients treated with antiepileptic drugs. The most noteworthy finding was that the serum IgA was decreased in 22 patients, and an IgA deficiency noticed in 12 of them. The blastic transformation rate of lymphocytes in PHA-containing cultures appeared low in seven out of 12 patients. Other findings included decreased serum IgM and IgG in some patients. These abnormalities were not encountered in epileptic patients taking no anti-epileptic drugs. Therefore, they could be considered as the side effects of antiepileptic drugs. In all patients manifes

BACKGROUND: Kaposiform lymphangiomatosis (KLA) is an aggressive complex lymphatic anomaly. Patients exhibit malformed lymphatic vessels and often develop hemorrhagic effusions and elevated angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) levels. A somatic NRAS p.Q61R (NRASQ61R) mutation has been associated with KLA. Existing preclinical models do not recapitulate the thoracic effusions that drive morbidity and mortality in patients. The goal of this study was to develop a genetic mouse model that more closely mimics the clinical phenotype of KLA.
PROCEDURE: A tamoxifen-inducible Cre-loxP system was used to conditional

Fetal axillary cystic hygroma has been reported rarely and only as a sonographic finding late in gestation. A retrospective study of 19,200 early second trimester screening ultrasonograms for anomalies revealed five cases of axillary cystic hygroma. All of the axillary hygromas were small, transient, nonloculated cysts. Three cysts were associated with chromosomal abnormalities: trisomy 21 in two cases and a single case of trisomy 18 in which structural abnormalities also were detected. Early fetal axillary cystic hygroma appears to be different from postnatal axillary cysts on the basis of di

Filarial lymphoedema is a tropical parasitic worm illness caused mostly by Wuchereria bancrofti. This disease impacts millions of individuals in endemic areas, causing significant impairment and financial discomfort. Elephantiasis is a chronic lymphatic drainage failure causing swelling in the legs and genitalia. It is a chronic condition characterized by the buildup of lymphatic water, causing pain and reduced limb activity. Genetic abnormalities, trauma, surgery, infection, or cancer cause the disease. Treatment options include antiparasitic drugs, surgical interventions, and nonsurgical int

Chylous ascites is a unique phenomenon defined in the literature by ascitic fluid with a triglyceride content >200 mg/dl. This rather rare entity can be associated with a number of different pathologies related to abnormalities within the lymphatic system. This case report serves to demonstrate an intestinal volvulus and resultant chylous ascites found on exploratory laparotomy in an otherwise healthy individual who participated in routine, extreme abdominal exercises.

Hennekam syndrome is a rare, recently described genetic disorder in which facial anomalies and mental retardation accompany congenital lymphedema and intestinal lymphangiectasia. Several other somatic abnormalities have variously been described, as have milder degrees of lymphatic dysfunction. The authors herein describe a case of Hennekam syndrome in which the diagnostic difficulties were partially overcome by the judicious use of radionuclide scintigraphy to verify the lymphedematous component of the patient's presentation.

Splenic lymphangioma (SL) is a rare benign lymphatic malformation resulting from abnormal development of lymphatic vessels. It primarily affects children and may coexist with lymphatic malformations at other anatomical sites. Most patients are asymptomatic, and the diagnosis is often incidental. When symptoms occur, they are usually related to the size of the lesion and the compression of adjacent organs. We present the case of a 14-year-old male with a history of congenital gluteal and perineal lymphatic malformations, initially misdiagnosed prenatally as myelomeningocele. During follow-up, t

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic anomalies (LAs) include several disorders in which abnormal lymphatic tissue invades the neck, chest, and various organs. Progressive cases may result in lethal outcomes and have proven difficult to treat. Sirolimus is showing promising results in the management of vascular anomalies. We examined the efficacy and safety of sirolimus treatment in patients with progressive LAs.
METHODS: All patients with LAs treated with sirolimus from May 2015 to September 2018 were included. They received oral sirolimus once a day and the dose was adjusted so that the trough concentratio

Objective: Previously, we analyzed human varicose veins (VV) using imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) and detected the abnormal accumulation of lipid molecules in the walls of VV, possibly due to insufficient lipid drainage by the lymphatic vessels. In this study, we created an animal model of lymphatic insufficiency to investigate the effects of insufficient lymph drainage on vein walls. Methods: In rats, the lymphatic collecting vessels surrounding the femoral vein were ligated on one side (the model tissue), which caused the local retention of lymphatic fluid in the perivascular tissue. The eq

BACKGROUND: Microvascular lymph node transfer has been used to improve lymphatic function in patients with lymphoedema. We previously reported changes in the lymphatic function of the donor limb after lymph node transfer. For this reason, we modified our surgical method to be more conservative.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Microvascular lymph node transfer was performed in 13 patients using the previously reported original method. Sixteen patients were operated upon using the more conservative modified method. Lymphatic function in the donor limb was evaluated using volumetry, lymphoscintigraphy and

Background: To describe the dynamic contrast magnetic resonance lymphangiography (DCMRL) findings of three patients with complicated lymphatic anomaly (CLA) and protein losing enteropathy. We further discuss the importance of a multicompartment (intrahepatic [IH], intramesenteric [IM], and intranodal [IN]) DCMRL in delineating central lymphatic flow pathologies. Methods and Results: This is a retrospective study of three patients-one adult and two children who individually underwent the three-compartment DCMRL, namely IN-DCMRL, IH-DCMRL, and IM-DCMCRL. Chyluria, the passage of chyle-laden lymph into urine, is most frequently linked to filarial infection but may also occur in diverse nonparasitic settings. We describe a 43-year-old man with diabetes, hypertension, and rheumatic heart disease who was admitted with prolonged fever and dyspnea and found to have infective endocarditis. The patient developed persistent milky urine during hospitalization that was unresponsive to a high-protein, low-fat diet supplemented with medium-chain triglycerides. Filariasis serology was negative. Although his comorbidities are not primary etiologic factors fo

The case of a patient with epithelioid sarcoma in the right arm is reported. The diagnosis was delayed because of misinterpretation arising from complexity in the MR findings, including a honeycomb pattern in the subcutaneous fat simulating lymphedema, and an intramuscular diffuse high signal intensity on T2-weighted images without a discrete mass lesion. The histological findings revealed that the diffuse muscular abnormality mainly resulted from denervation of the muscles due to perineural invasion by the tumor, and subcutaneous edema from lymphedema secondary to lymphatic tumor spread concu
