The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of magnesium (Mg) loading (10.0 mg Mg/kg body wt) and daily Mg supplements (5.0 mg Mg/kg body wt) on Mg deficiency shown by increased and not by decreased serum Mg concentration during hypokinesia (decreased km number/d). The studies were done during 30 d of prehypokinesia and 364 d of hypokinesia (HK) periods. Forty endurance-trained volunteers aged 22-26 yr with a peak VO2 max of 66.3 mL.kg-1 min-1 and with an average 15.0 km/d running distance were chosen as subjects. They were equally divided into four groups: 1. Unsupplemented ambulatory co

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of changes in the state of magnesium balance on ionized magnesium and ionized calcium in serum and brain ti … after 8 days of hypomagnesemia. Serum and brain ionized calcium were not affected during peripheral magnesium deficiency.
CONCLUSION: During peripheral magnesium deficiency, brain levels of ionized magnesium and ionized calcium are tightly regulated and appear unaffected. However, central levels of these electrolytes are altered under hypermagnesemic conditions. Thus …

We compared the efficiency of different stereoisomers of organic magnesium salts (Mg DL-, Mg D-, and Mg L-aspartate and Mg L- and Mg DL-glutamate) after oral administration under conditions of furosemide-induced magnesium deficiency. The time to complete compensation of erythrocyte magnesium level was 5 days for Mg L-aspartate, 10 and 8 days for Mg L-glutamate and Mg D-aspartate, respectively, and 11 days for Mg DL-aspartate and Mg DL-glutamate. These findings attest to better bioavailability of Mg complex with L-stereoisomer of aspartate in comparison with DL and D-stereoisomers and stereoiso…

A patient with hypocalcaemia and hypomagnesaemia secondary to small bowel resection and malabsorption was treated with synthetic vitamin D analogue, 1-alpha hydroxy vitamin D3. A prompt rise in serum calcium concentration and some days later a smaller and transient rise in serum magnesium concentration was observed. These changes in extracellular fluid composition presumably resulted from enhanced calcium and magnesium absorption associated with vitamin D activity.

Quinolone-induced arthropathy has been described in juvenile rats between 3 and 6 weeks of age, but not in adult rats. The mechanism of this chondrotoxic effect is probably related to the Mg2+-chelating properties of the drugs, since identical cartilage lesions were observed in magnesium-deficient juvenile rats without quinolone treatment. However, the reasons for the phase-specificity of the effect are unknown. In the present study, we fed a magnesium-deficient diet to Wistar rats at different postnatal developmental stages. Cartilage lesions were only observed in magnesium-deficient rats bet

We investigated the effect of dietary magnesium (Mg) level on protein utilization in rats. Male Wistar rats were fed a control diet (control group) and a Mg-deficient diet (Mg-deficient group) for 28 days. After 28 days, the diet of half of the Mg-deficient group (recovery group) was changed from the Mg-deficient diet to the control diet for either 7 or 14 days. After 28 days, final body weight, weight gain and food efficiency were significantly decreased due to the Mg-deficient diet. Apparent Mg absorption, Mg retention and serum Mg levels were also significantly decreased due to the Mg-defic

Magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn) are essential nutrients for plants. Mg deficiency often occurs in rice plants grown in Zn-polluted soil. However, the mechanism for this correlation is unclear. Here, we performed culture experiments on rice plants (Oryza sativa L.) and used Mg isotopes to investigate mechanisms of Zn stress on plant Mg deficiency. Our results show that excess Zn can significantly reduce the uptake of Mg in rice tissues. The root displays positive Δ26Mgplant-nutrient values (δ26Mgplant-δ26Mgnutrient; 1.90 ‰ to 2.06 ‰), which suggests that Mg enters the root cells mainly via Mg-spec

Nine non-pregnant, lactating dairy cows were used to study plasma and urinary magnesium concentrations ([Mg]pl; [Mg]u), and the urinary fractional excretion of magnesium (FE(Mg)) before, during and after an 120 min intravenous magnesium (Mg) administration (2.5 mg/kg body weight). Animals received a total mixed ration, and Mg content of the diet was within recommended range. Basal mean [Mg]pl, [Mg]u and FE(Mg) were 0.89 +/- 0.09 mm, 5.92 +/- 2.99 mm and 8.3 +/- 9.7% respectively. For all parameters, a substantial inter-individual variation was observed. Three cows showed suboptimal [Mg]pl and/

During pregnancy, a mother experiences increased metabolic demands to meet the needs of the fetus. A mismatch between these demands and nutrient intake can result in a host of developmental abnormalities to the fetus and health risks to the mother. Several studies have reported strong correlations between deficiency of the essential mineral, magnesium (Mg), and many pregnancy complications, including intrauterine growth restriction, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and preterm delivery. Mg also impacts fetal programming and disease presentation in childhood and adulthood, showing that aberr

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is defined as an increase in mean pulmonary arterial pressure above 25 mmHg. Pulmonary vasoconstriction, cellular proliferation, inflammation, and oxidative stress are involved in the pathophysiology of PH. Since hypomagnesemia was reported to promote endothelial cell dysfunction leading to inflammation and oxidative stress, we investigated the potential involvement of magnesium (Mg) deficiency in experimental and human PH. Our results indicate that Mg deficiency has no impact on hypoxia-induced PH development or severity, and that no reduction in Mg plasma concentr

Magnesium is one of the most important regulatory cation involved in several biological processes. It is important for maintaining the struc … dent. Moreover, the enzymes involved in ATP production and hydrolysis are also magnesium-dependent. Magnesium deficiency by interfering with ATPase functions causes increased intracellular calcium and sodium and decreases intracellular potassium concentration. Furthermore, magnesium deficiency is associated with increased oxidative stress secondary to increased expres …

Hyporetinemia is observed in several pathological conditions including a primary deficiency of vitamin A and has also been reported to accompany inflammatory diseases. Experimental magnesium (Mg) deficiency in rodents is accompanied by an inflammatory syndrome. The present study was designed to determine whether the acute phase response in Mg-deficient rats can modify vitamin A status. Clinical symptoms of acute phase response were observed in Mg-deficient rats and were accompanied by a reduction in plasma retinol and of plasma retinol binding protein (RBP). Mg deficiency in rats resulted in h

A young ICD recipient with a history of syncope and idiopathic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia/ventricular fibrillation presented after an ICD discharge. She had delivered her first child 8 days prior to the event and she had been lactating. Numerous short runs of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia/ventricular fibrillation resolved with aggressive replacement of magnesium and elimination of breast-feeding.

Magnesium (Mg) participates in many biochemical reactions which involve a variety of other nutrients. To elucidate some nutrient interactions, fructose (FR) and starch (ST) were compared as carbohydrate sources, and boron (B) and copper (Cu) were added to low-Mg diets for young male rats. Lack of Mg always caused characteristic deficiency symptoms. FR resembled Mg deficiency in effects on body, liver, and kidney weights and on plasma cholesterol level, but did not affect serum Mg or calcium (Ca). FR effects apparently were not mediated by changes in plasma Mg and Ca concentrations and were not
