Current themes in neuroimaging studies of reading.

This editorial provides a summary of the highlights from 11 new papers that have been published in a special issue of Brain and Language on … from the left occipito-temporal cortex to the posterior parietal lobe. This observation fits with a magnetoencephalography study showing how activity in the angular gyrus is influenced by early occipito-temporal activity; with angular gyrus activity contributing to inferior frontal activity. Overall, the papers within the special issue illustrate the wide range of diffe …

The temporal sequence of magnetic brain activity for food categorization and memorization--an exploratory study.

The importance of food stimuli for all living organisms is defined by their relevance for survival. Therefore, visual processing of food stimuli is influenced by many factors, such as cultural and societal background. In this magnetoencephalography (MEG) study, we examined the categorization and memorization of visual food and non-food stimuli in lean subjects, using a one-back working memory task. We found an increase in neural activity in several different regions of the brain elicited by food stimuli in comparison to non-food stimuli. The first observed significant difference was found in l…

Pathophysiology of sensorimotor cortex in cortical myoclonus.

We have studied greatly enhanced cortical responses to somatosensory stimuli [giant somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) or magnetic field (SEF)] and cortical activities preceding the myoclonus (premyoclonus spike) in patients with cortical myoclonus, using magnetoencephalographic (MEG) techniques. A P1m component of giant SEF was estimated as a dipole positioned on the postcentral gyrus in all giant SEFs. This indicates that abnormally enhanced responses to sensory stimuli originate from the sensory cortex. In most of the patients with cortical reflex myoclonus, a dipole for the premyoclonus

Neuromagnetic cortical signals in a patient with hydrocephalus.

We studied a patient with a communicating hydrocephalus using a whole-head neuromagnetometer. Auditory evoked fields (AEFs) were elicited with 600 ms tones, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz in frequency. The source locations were more superficial and posterior in the patient than in controls, but still agreed with activation of the supratemporal cortex. Tonotopic organization of the AEF sources was similar in the patient and healthy control subjects. The amplitude spectra, source strengths and sites, and reactivity of the patient's spontaneous activity were normal. Despite apparent decrease of white

Neurophysiological Markers to Guide Return to Sport After Sport-Related Concussion.

Sport-related concussion (SRC) has been defined as a subset of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), without structural abnormalities, reflect … his article was to present state-of-the-art neurophysiologic methods (e.g., electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and autonomic nervous system) that are appropriate to investigate the complex pathophysiological process of a concussion. A secondary aim was to explore the potential for evidence-based markers to be used in clini …

Confidence drives a neural confirmation bias.

A prominent source of polarised and entrenched beliefs is confirmation bias, where evidence against one's position is selectively disregarded. This effect is most starkly evident when opposing parties are highly confident in their decisions. Here we combine human magnetoencephalography (MEG) with behavioural and neural modelling to identify alterations in post-decisional processing that contribute to the phenomenon of confirmation bias. We show that holding high confidence in a decision leads to a striking modulation of post-decision neural processing, such that integration of confirmatory evi…

Cognitive neuroscience using wearable magnetometer arrays: Non-invasive assessment of language function.

Recent work has demonstrated that Optically Pumped Magnetometers (OPMs) can be utilised to create a wearable Magnetoencephalography (MEG) system that is motion robust. In this study, we use this system to map eloquent cortex using a clinically validated language lateralisation paradigm (covert verb generation: 120 trials, ∼10 min total duration) in healthy adults (n = 3). We show that it is possible to lateralise and localise language function on a case by case basis using this system. Specifically, we show that at a sensor and source level we can reliably detect a lateralising beta band (15-3…

Somatosensory cortical remodelling after rehabilitation and clinical benefit of in writer's cramp.

In order to explore the pathophysiological basis of a new rehabilitation therapy in writer's cramp (WC), healthy controls, untreated WC patients and WC patients who recovered a legible handwriting after rehabilitation were explored using magnetoencephalography, and the somatosensory evoked fields of fingers I, II, III and V in the sensory cortex were studied. In the cortex controlling the dystonic limb, the size of the hand representation in the trained patients was similar to that of healthy controls, and significantly different from that of untrained patients. Trained patients exhibited 'sup…

Large-scale neural correlates of developmental dyslexia.

Recent work in the field of developmental dyslexia has emphasized the large-scale neural aspects of the disorder as measured by means of con … n and adults with dyslexia. Emerging research encompassing high-temporal resolution methods such as magnetoencephalography (MEG) suggests right-hemisphere involvement and points to the complexity of the developmental disorder. A combined approach of structural imaging and MEG, and most importantly theory driven behavioral tasks may shed light on dynamics and trajectorie …

MEG Intersubject Phase Locking of Stimulus-Driven Activity during Naturalistic Speech Listening Correlates with Musical Training.

Musical training is associated with increased structural and functional connectivity between auditory sensory areas and higher-order brain networks involved in speech and motor processing. Whether such changed connectivity patterns facilitate the cortical propagation of speech information in musicians remains poorly understood. We here used magnetoencephalography (MEG) source imaging and a novel seed-based intersubject phase-locking approach to investigate the effects of musical training on the interregional synchronization of stimulus-driven neural responses during listening to naturalistic c…

Alpha Rhythms Reveal When and Where Item and Associative Memories Are Retrieved.

Memories for past experiences can range from vague recognition to full-blown recall of associated details. Electroencephalography has shown that recall signals unfold a few hundred milliseconds after simple recognition, but has only provided limited insights into the underlying brain networks. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has revealed a "core recollection network" (CRN) centered on posterior parietal and medial temporal lobe regions, but the temporal dynamics of these regions during retrieval remain largely unknown. Here we used Magnetoencephalography in a memory paradigm asses…

Postictal mania associated with frontal lobe epilepsy.

A 38-year-old man, possibly with frontal lobe epilepsy, developed postictal mania. The changes in psychiatric symptoms and laboratory examinations over time were investigated in two episodes of postictal mania, using long-term electroencephalography with closed circuit television (EEG/CCTV) monitoring, magnetoencephalography (MEG), and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to elucidate the underlying mechanism of postictal mania. According to the clinical symptoms, the postictal manic episodes of this case had four phases: a lucid interval, manic phase, hypomanic phase, and recove…

Beta-Band Oscillations Represent Auditory Beat and Its Metrical Hierarchy in Perception and Imagery.

UNLABELLED: Dancing to music involves synchronized movements, which can be at the basic beat level or higher hierarchical metrical levels, as in a march (groups of two basic beats, one-two-one-two …) or waltz (groups of three basic beats, one-two-three-one-two-three …). Our previous human magnetoencephalography studies revealed that the subjective sense of meter influences auditory evoked responses phase locked to the stimulus. Moreover, the timing of metronome clicks was represented in periodic modulation of induced (non-phase locked) β-band (13-30 Hz) oscillation in bilateral auditory and se…

Altered low-γ sampling in auditory cortex accounts for the three main facets of dyslexia.

It has recently been conjectured that dyslexia arises from abnormal auditory sampling. What sampling rate is altered and how it affects reading remains unclear. We hypothesized that by impairing phonemic parsing abnormal low-gamma sampling could yield phonemic representations of unusual format and disrupt phonological processing and verbal memory. Using magnetoencephalography and behavioral tests, we show in dyslexic subjects a reduced left-hemisphere bias for phonemic processing, reflected in less entrainment to ≈30 Hz acoustic modulations in left auditory cortex. This deficit correlates with…
