A Systematic Review of Sexual Health in Older Chinese Adults: Significant Challenges, Marginalized Voices, and Directions for Future Interventions.

OBJECTIVES: China has a substantial population of older adults, defined as individuals aged 60 and above. In mainstream social and cultural scripts, older Chinese adults are frequently portrayed in a desexualized or asexual manner, reflecting traditional cultural norms that regard seniors as paragons of virtue. However, it is vital to acknowledge that older adults possess sexual desires, needs, and expressions, even though discussions about older sexuality are often viewed as taboo in Chinese society. METHODS: In accordance with PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews, this study included 42

Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Smoking Attitudes and Behaviors Among Adolescents in the Gaza Strip: Findings From the 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey.

BACKGROUND: Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure remains a critical public health concern, especially for adolescents, who are more susceptible to its harmful effects and may initiate smoking as a result. SHS, comprising both mainstream and sidestream smoke, contains over 7000 chemicals, many of which are carcinogenic. Adolescents exposed to SHS are more likely to experiment with smoking due to environmental influences, peer pressure, and familial smoking behavior. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the relationship between SHS exposure and smoking attitudes and behaviors among adolescents aged

Non-psychiatric physicians' learning experiences from past psychiatric training in Japan: a qualitative pilot study with intergroup contact theory approach.

BACKGROUND: Stigma associated with mental illness remains a pervasive global issue. This stigma is particularly pronounced in Japan, where mental healthcare may be perceived as a distinct culture: separate from mainstream medical care. The present pilot study aimed to clarify the learning experiences derived from direct contact with psychiatric care settings as medical students and postgraduate residents among physicians who subsequently pursued specialties outside of psychiatry. We focused on how such training may contribute to reducing stigma and improving attitudes toward mental illness fro

Disparities in health utilities among hepatitis C patients receiving care in different settings.

BACKGROUND: Although chronic hepatitis C (CHC) disproportionately affects marginalized individuals, most health utility studies are conducted in hospital settings which are difficult for marginalized patients to access. We compared health utilities in CHC patients receiving care at hospital-based clinics and socio-economically marginalized CHC patients receiving care through a community-based program. METHODS: We recruited CHC patients from hospital-based clinics at the University Health Network and community-based sites of the Toronto Community Hep C Program, which provides treatment, support

Gambling Interventions in Indigenous Communities, from Theory to Practice: A Rapid Qualitative Review of the Literature.

Indigenous populations globally experience problem gambling at higher rates than mainstream communities, often leading to adverse outcomes in social, cultural, and health domains (The term 'indigenous' within this paper refers to all first nations people from the specified countries. When capitalised, this refers to Australian Indigenous people specifically.). Problem gambling in indigenous communities has been linked to relative poverty and social disadvantage. The sweeping impacts of problem gambling for indigenous communities are holistic in nature and are felt throughout many aspects of th

The usefulness of 3D printed heart models for medical student education in congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology enables the translation of 2-dimensional (2D) medical imaging into a physical replica of a patient's individual anatomy and may enhance the understanding of congenital heart defects (CHD). We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of a spectrum of 3D-printed models in teaching CHD to medical students. RESULTS: We performed a prospective, randomized educational procedure to teach fifth year medical students four CHDs (atrial septal defect (ASD, n = 74), ventricular septal defect (VSD, n = 50), coarctation of aorta (CoA, n = 118) and tetralogy of

A patient perspective of complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) for migraine treatment: a social media survey.

UNLABELLED: To survey persons with migraine who use social media about Complementary and Integrative Medicine (CIM) for the treatment of migraine. BACKGROUND: CIM encompasses medical treatments that are not part of but are used in concert with mainstream medicine. Between 28 and 82% of people with migraine use non-drug approaches, and approximately 50% of people with migraine do not discuss non-drug treatments with their healthcare providers (HCPs). It is important for providers to be conversant with CIM treatments and the available evidence-based data. To further this effort, people with mig

Evaluating a large-scale community-based inclusion program: A mixed-methods study of the Special Olympics Host Town Program.

Community-based interventions are increasingly implemented to promote the social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. However, evidence regarding their large-scale impact across individual and organizational levels remains limited. This convergent mixed-methods study evaluated the Host Town Program, a short-term initiative implemented across Germany during the Special Olympics World Games 2023. Quantitative data were collected from stakeholders in sports clubs, schools, and local governments in Host Towns and matched control communities (baseline n = 488; post-intervention n = 2

The Characteristics of Intelligence Profile and Eye Gaze in Facial Emotion Recognition in Mild and Moderate Preschoolers With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Childhood autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can easily be misdiagnosed, due to the nonspecific social and communicational deficits associated with the disorder. The present study attempted to profile the mental development and visual attention toward emotion among preschool children with mild or moderate ASD who were attending mainstream kindergartens. A total of 21 children (17 boys and 4 girls) diagnosed with mild or moderate ASD selected from 5,178 kindergarteners from the Xi'an city were recruited. Another group of 21 typically developing (TD) children who were matched with age, gender, and c

Emotional literacy programme in special schools for children with a learning disability in England: the ZF-SEND feasibility RCT.

BACKGROUND: Children with a learning disability experience a range of inequalities and adverse life events that put them at greater risk of mental health problems. The construct of emotional literacy has been shown to be a moderating factor of how life stress affects mental health. Teaching emotional literacy in schools may therefore be an effective way to promote positive mental health. There is an identified need for adapted emotional literacy programmes in special schools. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether it is feasible to conduct a large-scale randomised controlled trial of the effectivene
