Fc gamma receptor IIa-H131R polymorphism and malaria susceptibility in sympatric ethnic groups, Fulani and Dogon of Mali.

It has been previously shown that there are some interethnic differences in susceptibility to malaria between two sympatric ethnic groups of Mali, the Fulani and the Dogon. The lower susceptibility to Plasmodium falciparum malaria seen in the Fulani has not been fully explained by genetic polymorphisms previously known to be associated with malaria resistance, including haemoglobin S (HbS), haemoglobin C (HbC), alpha-thalassaemia and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Given the observed differences in the distribution of FcγRIIa allotypes among different ethnic groups and wit…

Factors associated with low coverage in mass drug administration for schistosomiasis in mobile populations in mali: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect over a billion people globally. From 2020 to 2021, when this study was conducted, Mali remained endemic for multiple NTDs, including schistosomiasis and trachoma. At the time, significant efforts were underway to scale up control and elimination programs, although challenges persisted, particularly in reaching mobile populations such as nomads, migrants, and internally displaced persons (IDPs), with mass drug administration (MDA). These groups were often missed during campaigns, contributing to gaps in coverage and sustained transmission in…

The burden of headache and a health-care needs assessment in the adult population of Mali: a cross-sectional population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Our recent studies have shown headache disorders to be very common in the central and western sub-Saharan countries of Benin and Cameroon. Here we report headache in nearby Mali, a strife-torn country that differs topographically, culturally, politically and economically. The purposes were to estimate headache-attributed burden and need for headache care. METHODS: We used cluster-random sampling in seven of Mali's eleven regions to obtain a nationally representative sample. During unannounced household visits by trained interviewers, one randomly selected adult member (18-65 years…

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Seroassay Performance and Optimization in a Population With High Background Reactivity in Mali.

BACKGROUND: False positivity may hinder the utility of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) serological tests in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: From 312 Malian samples collected before 2020, we measured antibodies to the commonly tested SARS-CoV-2 antigens and 4 other betacoronaviruses by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In a subset of samples, we assessed antibodies to a panel of Plasmodium falciparum antigens by suspension bead array and functional antiviral activity by SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus neutralization assay. We then evaluated the performance of an ELISA…

Serological Evidence of West Nile and Usutu Viruses Circulation in Domestic and Wild Birds in Wetlands of Mali and Madagascar in 2008.

The geographical distribution and impact on animal and human health of both West Nile and Usutu viruses, two flaviviruses of the Japanese encephalitis complex, have been increasing during the past two decades. Both viruses circulate in Europe and Africa within a natural cycle between wild birds and mosquitoes, mainly from the Culex genus. We retrospectively analyzed sera from domestic and wild birds sampled in 2008 in two wetlands, namely the Inner Niger Delta, Mali, and the Lake Alaotra area, Madagascar. Sera were first tested using a commercial ID Screen West Nile Competition Multi-species E…

Effect of a facility-based multifaceted intervention on the quality of obstetrical care: a cluster randomized controlled trial in Mali and Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality in referral hospitals in Mali and Senegal surpasses 1% of obstetrical admissions. Poor quality obstetrical care contributes to high maternal mortality; however, poor care is often linked to insufficient hospital resources. One promising method to improve obstetrical care is maternal death review. With a cluster randomized trial, we assessed whether an intervention, based on maternal death review, could improve obstetrical quality of care. METHODS: The trial began with a pre-intervention year (2007), followed by two years of intervention activities and a post-int…

Feasibility of onchocerciasis elimination with ivermectin treatment in endemic foci in Africa: first evidence from studies in Mali and Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Mass treatment with ivermectin is a proven strategy for controlling onchocerciasis as a public health problem, but it is not known if it can also interrupt transmission and eliminate the parasite in endemic foci in Africa where vectors are highly efficient. A longitudinal study was undertaken in three hyperendemic foci in Mali and Senegal with 15 to 17 years of annual or six-monthly ivermectin treatment in order to assess residual levels of infection and transmission and test whether ivermectin treatment could be safely stopped in the study areas. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: S…

Updated epidemiology of haematological malignancies in the haematology & oncology and the internal medicine wards of the hospital of Point G, Bamako, Mali.

Summary This is a retrospective study on epidemiologic aspects of hematological malignancies from 1996 to 2003 in the Hospital of Point G, Bamako, Mali, in which we looked at files of all patients who visited the center during that period. During the study, 264 cases were diagnosed for hematological malignancies corresponding to an annual mean of 33 cases. Hematological malignancies were mostly lymphoid types (76.51%), among which NHL were predominant. For non lymphoid malignancies, CML was the most frequent (70.96 %). The prevalence of hematological malignancies was multiplied by 2.18 for lym…

[Protozoan infections and intestinal helminthiasis among the population of a village in the northern Sudan savannah area of Mali (West Africa)].

A cross sectional survey was carried out on intestinal parasites in a rural village located in a Sudan savannah area of Mali in September 1994. This survey was aimed to describe the prevalence of intestinal protozoa and helminths, and to evaluate the possible epidemiological impact of some sociobehavioural factors. A total of 209 stool specimens were examined with 3 methods: fresh stool examination, Kato thick smear technique and a formalin-ether concentration technique in a closed system. Cryptosporidium was also searched following the Ziehl-Neelsen staining and the immunofluorescence method …

[Does human distomiasis due to Fasiola gigantica exist in the delta of the Niger river in Mali? (apropos of a serological survey)].

Finding of specific anti-Fasciola antibodies in persons living in the central area of the delta of Niger shows that human fascioliasis is a reality in Mali. Fasciola gigantica, the single species affecting livestock is probably the parasite concerned. We think that this parasitic disease in humans is underestimated, obscured by schistosomiasis which is hyperendemic in the country. Complementary studies are much needed for better identification of the problem.

Facies leprosa: resorption of maxillary anterior alveolar bone and the anterior nasal spine in patients with lepromatous leprosy in Mali.

Resorption of the anterior nasal spine and alveolar bone in the anterior maxilla was measured in 39 patients with lepromatous leprosy in Mali. Bone resorption occurred in both of these sites, but resorption in one did not predict resorption in the other. These data are interpreted to mean that resorptions of bone anterior (nasal spine) or inferior (alveolar bone) to bacillary populations in the nasal mucosa of patients with lepromatous disease in Mali occur independently.

Knowledge and Attitudes of Women in the Pre- and Postnatal Period on Screening and Mother-to-Child Transmission of the Hepatitis B Virus in Mali.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major public health problem in Mali, with an estimated prevalence ranging between 8% and 10%. Despite the integration of HBV vaccination into the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), coverage of the birth dose and community awareness remain low. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of women in the prenatal and postnatal periods regarding HBV screening and the prevention of mother-to-child transmission in Bamako. A qualitative exploratory study was conducted among sixteen (16) women aged 22 to 36 years who atte…

Analysis of clinical malaria hotspots according to transmission levels in two health areas of the Kolondieba health district, Mali.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant progress, malaria remains a major challenge in Mali, due to heterogeneous transmission. The WHO 'High Burden to High Impact' strategy advocates targeting of high-transmission areas. This study aimed to identify clinical malaria hotspots in two health areas within the Kolondieba district with differing transmission levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study analysed 35,934 confirmed malaria cases extracted from consultation registers between 2019 and 2021 in the health areas of Kadiana (high risk) and Kolondieba Central (moderate risk).…
