[Giant complex odontoma with infection of mandible: a case report and literature review].

Giant complex odontoma of the mandible is a relatively rare odontogenic tumor. This article reported the clinical diagnosis and treatment process of a 42-year-old male patient with a giant complex odontoma in the left mandible accompanied by infection, along with a discussion based on relevant literature. Complex odontomas typically were asymptomatic and grew slowly, but giant odontomas (diameter >3 cm) may cause tooth displacement, mandibular swelling, or even infection. The uniqueness of this case lies in the odontoma penetrating the oral mucosa, leading to localized infection, which increas

In reply to the letter to the editor regarding "Clinical outcomes of teeth adjacent to the site of mandibulotomy or mandibulectomy in patients with head and neck cancer: results from a multidisciplinary mono-institutional head and neck tumor board".

This paper aims to reply to Somay et al., regarding their comment to a previous paper from our group, titled "Clinical outcomes of teeth adjacent to the site of mandibulotomy or mandibulectomy in patients with head and neck cancer: results from a multidisciplinary mono-institutional head and neck tumor board".The following concerns were addressed: 1) Within the limits of a case series, mandibulectomy might be considered a risk factor for the loss of tooth vitality as well as mandibulotomy. 2) Root canal therapy before surgery on the teeth adjacent to the surgical site could be an appropriate s

Novel swing lock denture design utilizing magnets for a patient with mandibular resection.

Mandibular defects requiring reconstructions may result from mandibular resections due to benign or malignant lesions. Prosthesis-based rehabilitation of such cases represents a challenge due to various anatomical and functional limitations. Here we present a novel design for the fabrication of a swing lock denture utilizing a simplified hinge and magnets for a patient who had undergone hemimandibulectomy.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma: a case study.

We present the case of an 8-year-old patient with a juvenile ossifying fibroma in the right mandibular angle and a radicular cyst in the left mandibular angle, which produced a major swelling at the level of the mandibular angles and prevented the correct eruption of the lower first molars. After the clinical and radiological (panoramic X-ray and dental scan of the mandible), the corresponding surgical treatment (cystectomy and remodelling) and histopathological study were carried out. Although juvenile ossifying fibroma is an uncommon clinical entity, its aggressive local behaviour and high r

Mandibular soft tissue mass as the initial presentation of Burkitt's lymphoma.

A six-year-old girl was evaluated for an intraoral mass of 5 months duration, which had been treated with antibiotics in a district hospital. Extraoral examination showed a firm, non-tender swelling at the angular region of the left mandible with regional lymphadenopathy. Intraoral examination revealed a mass extending from the left mandibular primary first molar to the retromolar region, interfering normal occlusion. The mass was painful and firm, peduculated and reddish in appearance. The remainder of the oral examination was unremarkable. Panoramic radiograph and CT scan showed a large mult

Solitary plasmacytoma of the mandible. Case report and review of the literature.

A case of solitary plasmacytoma of the mandible is presented. Review of the literature disclosed the following characteristics regarding the clinical course and prognosis. The patients ages ranged from 34 to 76 years, with a mean of 53 years; there was a marked preponderance of males. The site of predilection was the posterior portion of the mandible. The common symptom was a non-painful swelling of the mandible of long duration, and radiological features were non-specific. Monoclonal immunoglobulin was initially detected in 42% of the evaluated patients. The majority of patients were treated

Odontoma in an African elephant (Loxodonta africana).

The first known case of an odontoma in an African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is described. The tumour was fused with the coronal cementum of the sixth right mandibular molar tooth, thus preventing its eruption.

A Sequential Study of the Condylar Position Deviation of the Reconstruction Plate for Mandible.

Accurate reconstruction of the condylar process is essential when mandibular resection involves the condyle. To prevent postoperative displacement, intraoperative ligation of the reconstructed condyle to the preserved articular disc was performed. This study evaluated postoperative displacement of the reconstructed condyle. Twenty-three patients who underwent hemi-mandibulectomy and reconstruction using titanium plates between April 2001 and July 2023. Fifteen patients underwent ligation of the reconstructed condyle to the articular disc (ligation group), and 8 patients did not (nonligation gr

The Use of Coronoid Process as a Free Graft for Condylar Reconstruction in a Patient With Condylar Osteoma: A Condylar Reconstruction Technical Note (Technical Strategy).

Osteoma is a rare, asymptomatic, and slowly growing benign tumor of bone. Upon reviewing the literature, only 21 cases were previously reported in the mandibular condyle. A 19-year-old male patient presented to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Ain Shams University complaining of hypomobility and facial asymmetry involving the lower jaw. He stated that he was involved in a road traffic accident (RTA) and sustained a traumatic injury to the head a few years ago. Upon examination, it was noticed that the chin deviated to the right side with some discomfort during function. Comp

Early and Late Complications of Mandibulectomy Free Flap Reconstruction: Does the Selective Use of Soft Tissue Only Flaps Reduce Complications?

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the factors most associated with early and late complications following microvascular free tissue transfer (MVFTT) after mandibulectomy. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients undergoing MVFTT after segmental mandibulectomy from September 2016 to February 2021 was performed across a single academic institution. Surgical variables were collected, including the location of the resultant mandibular defect (anterior vs posterior) and flap type (osseous or non-osseous). The primary outcome variables included postoperative complications (early, <90 days; an

Fibular Graft-Effective Panorama for Prosthetic Rehabilitation of Resected Mandible.

Surgical management of extensive tumors in the mandibular region leads to massive disfigurement of the face. Also the prosthetic outcome of such patients rehabilitated with free soft tissue flaps is very poor. Reconstruction of extensive defects to overcome the disfigurement is a challenging procedure and can be achieved with free fibula flap. Free fibula graft provides sufficient length of bone for the reconstruction of the postsurgical defects. Excellent vascularity of fibula flap allows for easy uptake of the graft and osseointegration of the dental implants. The addition of a skin island a

Hyperplasia of the mandibular condyle. A historical review of important early cases with a presentation and analysis of twelve patients.

Thirteen patients with condylar hyperplasia have been examined and twelve operated upon in a nine year period ending December 1979. A further eight patients with facial asymmetry, considered to be the sequelae of condylar hyperplasia, had extra condylar osteotomies carried out. As no specimens are available for histopathological examination, they have been excluded from the series. There appears to be a similarity between the histological findings of osteochondromata of the mandibular condyle and coronoid processes, active condylar hyperplasia and the changes noticed in the region of the costo

A unique case of epithelioid sarcoma involving the mandibular alveolar mucosa.

Epithelioid sarcoma (ES) is an infrequent, malignant, mesenchymal, soft-tissue neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis characterized by epithelioid cytomorphology. The lack of SMARCB1/INI1 (Integrase interactor 1) expression typifies this pathology. It usually presents as a painless, indolent, slowly enlarging lesion or rarely as an aggressive growth. Epithelioid sarcoma affects mostly pediatric patients or young adults. It recurs quite frequently and possesses a high degree of metastatic potential. Two predominant histomorphologic patterns include classic/conventional type and proximal types. Epit
