Countdown to 2015: tracking donor assistance to maternal, newborn, and child health.

BACKGROUND: Timely reliable data on aid flows to maternal, newborn, and child health are essential for assessing the adequacy of current levels of funding, and to promote accountability among donors for attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for child and maternal health. We provide global estimates of official development assistance (ODA) to maternal, newborn, and child health in 2003 and 2004, drawing on data reported by high-income donor countries and aid agencies to the Organisation for Economic Development and Cooperation. METHODS: ODA was tracked on a project-by-project b…

Cardiovascular health after maternal placental syndromes (CHAMPS): population-based retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal placental syndromes, including the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and abruption or infarction of the placenta, probably originate from diseased placental vessels. The syndromes arise most often in women who have metabolic risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including obesity, pre-pregnancy hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidaemia. Our aim was to assess the risk of premature vascular disease in women who had had a pregnancy affected by maternal placental syndromes. METHODS: We did a population-based retrospective cohort study in Ontario, Canada, of 1.03

Nurse visitation for adolescent mothers: two-year infant health and maternal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Children of adolescent mothers have higher rates of morbidity and unintentional injuries and hospitalizations during the first 5 … r time, whereas EIP mothers did not. CONCLUSIONS: The EIP improved in selected areas of infant and maternal health, and these improvements were sustained for a period of 1 year following program termination. These findings have important implications for healthcare services.

Relationship between maternal church attendance and adolescent mental health and social functioning.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared maternal attendance at religious services with standard demographic characteristics such as race, type of religion, and mother's education in terms of their relative association with the behavioral and social functioning of young adolescents. METHODS: The Child Health and Illness Profile--Adolescent Edition and the Children's Depression Inventory were used to screen 445 youths age 11 through 13 who were randomly selected from two public middle schools in Baltimore. Based on the findings, the investigators selected a sample of 143 youths in which approximately tw

Neural tube defect etiology: new evidence concerning maternal hyperthermia, health and diet.

The authors conducted a retrospective case-control study to determine risk factors for neural tube defects (NTD). 88 Louisiana women (44 matched pairs) were interviewed. Previous evidence suggested that maternal health and/or nutrition may be involved in the etiology of NTD. The findings substantiate the importance of maternal risk factors, including the apparent elevation of body temperature from taking hot baths during the first gestational month. Maternal health, as measured by reported illness and use of medications during pregnancy, was also significant. Several dietary factors, including…

Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein screening activities of state health agencies: a survey.

Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) screening has been demonstrated to be cost-effective on a population basis and is becoming standard practice. The American Society of Human Genetics has twice published policy statements to define the essential elements of a quality screening program. The present study reviewed the impact of these policy statements on state public-health agencies with respect to regulation or provision of MSAFP screening in their jurisdictions. With a few exceptions, states have not elected to play a major role in provision or regulation of this test. There is need to a

Maternal and child health services for medically indigent children and pregnant women.

Millions of low-income children and women of childbearing age are completely uninsured. Medicaid, the nation's largest public health financing program for the poor, is an inadequate resource for uninsured families with children. By 1984, the program served only 46% of the poor and near-poor, down from 65% in 1976. To assess the availability of maternity and pediatric services for low income uninsured women and children, a survey of 51 Title V Maternal and Child Health agency officials was conducted in 1986. While nearly all states (48) offer some prenatal care programs for indigent women, rest

Unveiling complexities: Examining the role of traumatic loss in shaping the interplay between black maternal mental health and maternal bonding.

Black women are more likely to experience traumatic birthing events, more likely to experience perinatal depression, and less likely to receive mental health treatment than women of other racial and ethnic backgrounds, and yet largely overlooked in perinatal mental health research. This pilot study seeks to understand how unacceptable racial disparities and adverse perinatal outcomes influence Black maternal depression and maternal bonding by exploring how prior traumatic loss moderates the relationship between depression and bonding during a subsequent pregnancy among a sample of Black mother

Perinatal outcomes in twin pregnancies complicated by maternal morbidity: evidence from the WHO Multicountry Survey on Maternal and Newborn Health.

BACKGROUND: Twin pregnancy was associated with significantly higher rates of adverse neonatal and perinatal outcomes, especially for the second twin. In addition, the maternal complications (potentially life-threatening conditions-PLTC, maternal near miss-MNM, and maternal mortality-MM) are directly related to twin pregnancy and independently associated with adverse perinatal outcome. The objective of the preset study is to evaluate perinatal outcomes associated with twin pregnancies, stratified by severe maternal morbidity and order of birth. METHODS: Secondary analysis of the WHO Multicount

Maternal fat intake during pregnancy and wheeze and eczema in Japanese infants: the Kyushu Okinawa Maternal and Child Health Study.

PURPOSE: This cohort study examined the relationship between maternal intake of individual fatty acids, meat, and fish during pregnancy and the risk of wheeze and eczema in children aged 23-29 months because epidemiologic evidence on this topic is inconclusive. METHODS: Subjects were 1354 Japanese mother-child pairs. Data on maternal intake during pregnancy were assessed with a validated diet history questionnaire. Data on symptoms of wheeze and eczema were based on criteria of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. RESULTS: Significant inverse exposure-response relati

A Value-Based Health Care Maternity Program and Perinatal Outcomes in Brazil.

The Brazilian private health sector is characterized by cesarean delivery rates approaching 88% and fragmented maternity care models, contributing to preventable perinatal complications and high health care costs. Value-based health care (VBHC) frameworks offer a structured approach to aligning care delivery with outcomes that matter to patients. The authors conducted a propensity score-matched cohort study using data from 5477 consecutive pregnancies delivered between January 2022 and March 2026 at Hospital and Maternity São Joaquim, Franca, São Paulo, Brazil. The matched analysis was restric

Maternal perspectives on poor mental health and the impact on mother-infant relationships.

AIM: The high prevalence of trauma, anxiety, and depression among postpartum women, particularly in low-income groups, poses a global health challenge. These mental health issues can strain the mother-infant relationship and negatively affect the infant's socio-emotional and cognitive development, with broader societal implications. This study aims to explore South African postpartum mothers' perceptions of mental health and their influence on mother-infant bonding to inform targeted support strategies. METHODS: Fifteen participants with infants under 4 months old were recruited from Soweto,

Economic connectivity and clustering: The influence of social connections on maternal and infant health.

Recent influential work in the US finds that bridging capital (i.e., friendships across socioeconomic strata) appears to increase upward economic mobility over the life course. Examinations of the role of these social connections on health, however, remain relatively unexplored. We exploit a recent effort which made publicly available ZIP-level measures of bridging capital and bonding capital (i.e., depth of friend networks within the same stratum) using Facebook information on >70 million Americans. We test in California (8 million births; California Birth Cohort File 2005 to 2021) the relati

Epigenetic regulation in female reproduction: the impact of m6A on maternal-fetal health.

With the development of public health, female diseases have become the focus of current concern. The unique reproductive anatomy of women leads to the development of gynecological diseases gradually become an important part of the socio-economic burden. Epigenetics plays an irreplaceable role in gynecologic diseases. As an important mRNA modification, m6A is involved in the maturation of ovum cells and maternal-fetal microenvironment. At present, researchers have found that m6A is involved in the regulation of gestational diabetes and other reproductive system diseases, but the specific mechan

The impact of maternal sleep during pregnancy on childhood health: A systematic review.

The impact of maternal gestational sleep on pregnancy complications and birth outcomes has been well established by several systematic reviews/meta-analyses. However, the long-term health effect on children has not been summarized. Given the emerging evidence in maternal sleep is revealing new significant insights into this research field, the present review was particularly designed to systematically review and critically appraise existing population-based studies on the association between maternal sleep during pregnancy and childhood health. Available full-text studies that focused on the a

The changing landscape of cannabis use: impact on maternal health and neonatal outcomes.

The landscape of cannabis use has changed rapidly, with over 40% of adults aged 19 to 30 years using cannabis in the past year. Of great concern is the rising prevalence in pregnant women, fueled by the legalization and its public perception of safety. However, emerging evidence from animal/in vitro and human studies suggests that prenatal cannabis exposure influence maternal physiology and fetal development, with impact on short- and long-term outcomes. While cannabis exposure is well-known for its impacts on cognitive functioning and neurodevelopment, it also affects other organ systems, lea

A Concept Analysis on Failure to Rescue in Maternal Health: Implications for Practice and Policy.

BACKGROUND: Although "Failure to Rescue" (FTR) has been widely studied in general healthcare contexts, and a few clinical specialties, its definition and implications remain underexplored within maternal health, particularly given the heightened risks for marginalized women. The quality measure was retired as a national quality metric before formal adoption into obstetric care, leaving significant gaps in maternal patient safety. High rates of preventable maternal morbidity and mortality, highlight the urgent need to explore and define this concept specifically within maternal health. OBJECTI…

Child health and psychosocial wellness in the context of maternal role overload and depression.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the variability of child health and psychosocial outcomes in the context of maternal role overload and maternal depression. BACKGROUND: Role overload, characterized as time-based role stress, is commonly linked to depression in mothers. However, it remains uncertain whether maternal role overload poses a risk for negative child health and wellness. Although maternal depression is a known risk factor for poor child health and psychosocial outcomes, the outcomes themselves often reveal variability. METHOD: This study aimed to investigate th
