BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder associated with cognitive deficits, learning problems, medical complications and cosmetic disfigurement. Despite the wide-ranging impact of NF1, very few studies have examined the psychosocial adjustment of individuals with NF1, and in particular, self-concept. The aims of this study were threefold: (i) to examine the self-concept of children and adolescents with NF1; (ii) to compare the self-concept of children with NF1 (NF1 only), children with NF1 and learning difficulties [NF1 + LA (low achievement)], and children with NF1 an

Growing knowledge in immunology has outpaced the development of unifying concepts that explain how molecular circuits generate immune goals-strong response to pathogens, self-tolerance, and prevention of collateral damage. Here, we propose that excitability, a concept from dynamical systems, provides these goals in diverse contexts. An excitable system produces a large response pulse when stimulus crosses a threshold and then shuts itself down, followed by a refractory period. We mathematically screen thousands of cytokine and cell circuits to identify the handful that can show excitability. O

Digital education in the life sciences has seen several remarkable advances in recent years, not least with the advent of visual and immersive technologies that bring into focus the conceptually challenging abstract concepts that underpin molecular biology and the life sciences. In some cases, limitations in visualizing and modelling these concepts can prove to be a barrier to learning. Providing new entry points to learning through 'doing' or 'seeing' could prove to be a significant enhancer of engagement, unlocking hidden potential in our student cohorts and increasing the uptake of science

In the context of the science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics disciplines in education, subjects tend to use contextualized activities or projects. Educational robotics and computational thinking both have the potential to become subjects in their own right, though not all educational programs yet offer these. Despite the use of technology and programming platforms being widespread, it is not common practice to integrate computational thinking and educational robotics into the official curriculum in secondary education. That is why this paper continues an initial project of inte

Growth of man differs basically from that of all animals - perhaps except some species of primates - by demonstrating a puberal growth spurt. This behaviour is well known but was hardly ever analyzed in a mathematical manner. The growth spurt is indeed difficult to grasp and this all the more as it shows varying forms of appearance. This becomes evident by the investigation of height values for normal and growth-restricted children as is the case with genetic diseases. From these variants, PELZ and SAGER came to the conclusion of setting up differentiated forms of growth spurts with adequate d

Black Sigatoka disease (BSD), also known as black leaf streak disease, is an airborne fungal infection caused by Pseudocercospora fijiensis that severely impacts global banana and plantain production. Its persistence and resistance to eradication make it one of the most challenging plant diseases to manage. In this paper, we propose a deterministic pathogen-host model to describe BSD dynamics. Due to dual transmission pathways (ascospores and conidia) and mate limitation in sexual reproduction, the model exhibits a backward bifurcation: a stable endemic equilibrium coexists with the disease-fr

Recent research highlights that calcium dysfunction, emerging from impaired neuron-astrocyte interactions plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In our current study, we investigate this through a computational model of bidirectional coupling between a neuron and an astrocyte within a tripartite synapse framework. Individually, neuron is designed to exhibit neuronal firing dynamics, while the astrocyte captures amyloid- β -mediated calcium signaling. In particular, we consider the spatiotemporal version of the model across three scenarios: (i) no diffusion; (ii)

There is increasing evidence that brief periods of quiet wakeful rest immediately after learning facilitate memory consolidation. Similar to consolidation during sleep, this effect has been assumed to derive from neocortical-hippocampal interactions that are accompanied by slow-oscillating cortical activity. This assumption is supported by studies showing that the magnitude of frontal slow-oscillating activity during quiet wakefulness predicts memory performance and that slow-oscillating transcranial direct current stimulation (so-tDCS) during sleep can enhance memory retrieval. We tested whet

Classical infectious disease compartmental models typically do not incorporate spatial heterogeneity or mobility. We develop a multi-region susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered (SEIR) model in which disease dynamics are coupled via inter-region mobility and the transmission rate is both region and time dependent. We calibrate the model using rolling averages of daily COVID-19 data in all 100 North Carolina counties. Mobility parameters are prescribed using daily inter-county commuter data. The number of transmission rate parameters is substantially reduced by hypothesizing that the dynamics

Disruptions in the balance of mitochondrial fission and fusion are implicated in a host of diseases including cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurodegenerative, as well as cancer. Leinheiser et al. proposed a mechanistic model for mitochondrial fission which relies on the oligomerization of Dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1). In this work, we propose an alternative state-dependent delay-differential equation (sdDDE) framework for mitochondrial fission, which reveals that the intrinsic delay dynamics in Drp1 oligomerization can drive oscillations in the rate of mitochondrial fission. To develop th

Lymphatic vessel dysfunction is increasingly recognized in metabolic diseases, contributing to edema, dyslipidemia, and tissue lipid accumulation. Type 2 diabetes has been experimentally linked to lymphatic vascular defects characterized by enhanced permeability resulting from low nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. To examine the effects of this dysfunction, we developed a mathematical model of fluid exchange between a collecting lymphatic vessel and the surrounding tissue. The lymph flow is modeled using the Stokes equations for an incompressible, viscous fluid, while the collecting vessel is

Ecological interactions shape the dynamics of natural populations in the wild. Density-dependent processes are widespread and may change the respective effects of populations on one another, for instance by shifting interactions from mutualistic to parasitic relationships. Here, we develop a general deterministic model of two interacting populations, assuming density-dependent costs and benefits for the interacting individuals within and between species. This framework aims at generalizing pre-existing population dynamics models involving competition, predation, mutualism and parasitism, by al

Rapid identification and isolation of infected individuals with diagnostic testing plays a critical role in combating invasions of novel human pathogens. Unfortunately, unprepared health agencies may struggle to meet the massive testing capacity demands imposed by an outbreaking novel pathogen, potentially resulting in a failure of epidemic containment as occurred with COVID-19. Despite the critical importance of understanding the likelihood of such an outcome, it remains unclear how the particular characteristics of a novel disease will impact the magnitude of resource constraints on controll

Mosquitoes are important vectors for the transmission of some major infectious diseases of humans, i.e., malaria, dengue, West Nile Virus and Zika virus. The burden of these diseases is different for different regions, being highest in tropical and subtropical areas, which have high annual rainfall, warm temperatures, and less pronounced seasonality. The life cycle of mosquitoes consists of four distinct stages: eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. These life stages have different mortality rates and only adults can reproduce. Seasonal weather may affect the population dynamics of mosquitoes, and

Chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) can lead to formation of abnormal nodular structures within the liver. To address how changes in liver anatomy affect overall virus-host dynamics, we developed within-host ordinary differential equation models of two-patch hepatitis B infection, one that assumes irreversible and one that assumes reversible movement between nodular structures. We investigated the models analytically and numerically, and determined the contribution of patch susceptibility, immune responses, and virus movement on within-patch and whole-liver virus dynamics. We explor

A central challenge in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) public health policy lies in determining whether to universally expand treatment access, despite the risk of sub-optimal adherence and consequent drug resistance, or to adopt a more strategic allocation of resources that balances treatment coverage with adherence support. This dilemma is further complicated by the need for timely switching to second-line therapy, which is critical for managing treatment failure but imposes additional burdens on limited healthcare resources. In this study, we develop and analyze a compartmental model of

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. With the consideration of the transmission mechanism and heterogeneity of population, an age-structured cholera epidemic model is proposed, involving saturation incidence rates that describe direct and indirect transmission pathways and all class-ages with the susceptible age of susceptible individuals, infection age of infected individuals and biological age of Vibrio cholerae. The focus is to investigate the global dynamics of the model by using the basic reproduction number R 0 . After establishing the well-pose

Chronic Myeloid Leukemia is a blood cancer for which standard therapy with Tyrosine-Kinase Inhibitors is successful in the majority of patients. After discontinuation of treatment half of the well-responding patients either present undetectable levels of tumor cells for a long time or exhibit sustained fluctuations of tumor load oscillating at very low levels. Motivated by the consequent question of whether the observed kinetics reflect periodic oscillations emerging from tumor-immune interactions, in this work, we analyze a system of ordinary differential equations describing the immune respo

Processing numerosities relies on the innate capacity to understand and manipulate the number of items in a set, and to additional abilities such as inhibitory skills -which are known to be linked to brain oscillations in the alpha range. Whether these inhibitory skills are causally linked to numerosity processing and critical for it is unclear. To address this question, we used alpha-based brain stimulation (transcranial alternate current stimulation, tACS) to target inhibitory abilities in the context of numerosity discrimination. Twenty-nine young adults received bilateral tACS to the parie

The many variations on a graphic illustrating the impact of non-pharmaceutical measures to mitigate pandemic influenza that have appeared in recent news reports about COVID-19 suggest a need to better explain the mechanism by which social distancing reduces the spread of infectious diseases. And some reports understate one benefit of reducing the frequency or proximity of interpersonal encounters, a reduction in the total number of infections. In hopes that understanding will increase compliance, we describe how social distancing (a) reduces the peak incidence of infections, (b) delays the occ
