The Age-Related Development of Maxillary Sinus in Children.

INTRODUCTION: Paranasal sinuses are complex structures and show individual variation. Providing normative values for paranasal sinus size and their changes related to age could be helpful in evaluating the presence of some diseases related to sinonasal region. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the development of maxillary sinuses and evaluate the volume changes according to age and sex by using stereological and ellipsoidal formula methods after that to compare these approaches with each other in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective volumetric computed tomogra…

Implants Displaced Into the Maxillary Sinus: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Implant displacement into the maxillary sinus often results from features specific to the posterior maxillary teeth, including poor bone quality and insufficient remaining bone. This study reviews implants displaced into the maxillary sinus, the causes and complications of displacement, and how to remove them, according to when the displacement occurs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PubMed, Ovid (MEDLINE), and EMBASE databases were searched using the keywords "displacement," "implant," "maxillary sinus," and "removal" for articles published between January 2000 and July 2013. RESULTS…

Osteoblastoma of the maxillary sinus in a child presenting with exophthalmos.

INTRODUCTION: Benign osteoblastoma is a rare fibrous bone tumour observed in children. Very few cases involving the paranasal sinuses have been reported. SUMMARY: A 10-year-old child presented with a 1-month history of right exophthalmos. Clinical and radiological assessment demonstrated a heterogeneous tumour with bone components occupying all of the maxillary sinus. Initial histology was in favour of fibrous dysplasia. Surgery was performed via a combined approach. After review of the histology slides, the final diagnosis was that of osteoblastoma. In view of the procedure performed and aft…

Ectopic primary olfactory neuroblastoma of the maxillary sinus.

Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare malignant tumor. Although the vast majority of cases arise in the nasal cavity, ONB is rarely reported in ectopic locations. We report a case of ONB in the maxillary sinus. A 63-year-old woman presented with left-sided nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a nonenhancing left maxillary sinus tumor. Histologic sections showed ONB, Hyams grade IV, invading bone, skeletal muscle, and adjacent fibroadipose tissue. It is essential to be accurate when diagnosing sinonasal tumors because the differential diagnosis is broad, and one …

Prophylactic antibiotic therapy for fractures of the maxillary sinus.

We conducted a study to examine the incidence of acute sinusitis following maxillary sinus fractures, as well as the impact of antibiotics in the postinjury period. Fifty patients who presented to our institution with a fracture of the maxillary sinus were prospectively randomized to receive either a nasal saline spray and a 3-day course of antibiotics (either amoxicillin/clavulanate or levofloxacin) or nasal saline alone; there were 25 patients in each group. After a minimum of 3 days, all patients were assessed for acute sinusitis. Follow-up data were available on 17 patients (a total of 21 …

Cementoblastoma of posterior maxilla involving the maxillary sinus.

Cementoblastoma is a rare neoplasm, representing <1% of all odontogenic tumors. It usually occurs in the posterior mandible and is associated with roots of a mandibular first molar or second premolar. This paper presents a rare case of cementoblastoma in the maxillary posterior region involving the maxillary sinus, in a young female patient. The clinical, radiological, and histopathological features of the lesion are discussed along with a review of previously reported cases in the literature.

Inflammatory pseudotumour of the maxillary sinus mimicking malignancy.

Inflammatory pseudotumours of the paranasal sinuses are rare entities and can be easily confused with aggressive malignant tumours. In this report we describe the characteristic behavior of inflammatory pseudotumours in the maxillary sinus. We present a case of a 47-year-old Caucasian woman, who presented in our ENT department because of progressive nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and epiphora. The clinical as well as the radiological findings suggested a maxillary sinus neoplasm, most probably of malignant nature. The histopathological examination showed an inflammatory pseudotumour of the maxi…

Aggressive inflammatory pseudotumor of the maxillary sinus and orbit.

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) is a rare, locally aggressive, benign neoplasm of unknown etiology. It is uncommon in the head and neck region, particularly in the paranasal sinuses. We present an unusual case of IPT of the maxillary sinus and orbit in a 27-year-old woman who presented with cheek swelling, right orbital swelling, double vision, and associated fever and trismus. Computed tomography identified a mass with radiologic features suggestive of a malignancy of the maxillary sinus and orbit; the mass extended into the infratemporal fossa, parapharyngeal space, anterior antral wall, and …

A Large Ameloblastic Fibro-odontoma of the Maxillary Sinus.

INTRODUCTION: Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma is a rare, benign, asymptomatic tumor. The term ameloblastic fibro-odontoma was first used by Hooker in 1967 as a separate lesion from ameloblastic odontoma. CASE REPORT: This case report describes an eleven years old female with large ameloblastic fibro-odontoma in the right maxillary sinus. CONCLUSION: There is a low potential for recurrence after complete Enucleation of ameloblastic fibro-odontoma, but due to the risk of ameloblastic sarcoma after recurrence, the surgery should be perfect along with a careful follow up.

Endoscopic lift of the maxillary sinus floor in Beagles.

The aim of this study was to introduce a modified endoscopic lift of the floor of the maxillary sinus in Beagles. Twelve operations (bilateral and randomly chosen) were done in 6 Beagles each in the test group (modified endoscopic operation), and the control group, in which the operation was done with an osteotome. All operations were evaluated by two indices of safety (perforation of the sinus membrane and nasal bleeding) and 3 effective indices (the intraoperative height after lifting, volume of bone grafts, and dislocation of the sinus grafts). The sinus membrane was not perforated and ther…

Foreign body of endodontic origin in the maxillary sinus.

Foreign bodies found in the maxillary sinus include tooth roots, burs, dental impression material, root-filling materials, dental implants, and needles. The purpose of this paper was to present an unusual case of a large foreign body of endodontic origin (root-filling material) removed from the maxillary sinus. A 45-year-old generally healthy male patient reported to the Department of Conservative Dentistry with Endodontics of the Medical University of Silesia, because of orbital and buccal pain on the right side of his face and headaches in the preceding 6 months. Those symptoms were associat…

Endoscopic removal of an ectopic tooth in maxillary sinus.

Ectopic teeth erupted in the maxillary sinus are rarely reported. Although the causes of eruption of a tooth into the maxillary sinus are unclear, some clinical conditions are suspected to be responsible, such as developmental disturbances (cleft palate), displacement of teeth by trauma, interventions or cyst, infection, genetic factors, crowding, and dense bone. Most cases of ectopic teeth in the maxillary sinus are asymptomatic and are occasionally diagnosed thanks to routine radiographic investigations. The aim of this article is to present and discuss the surgical management of an ectopic t…

Myeloid sarcoma of the cheek and the maxillary sinus regions.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare, extramedullary malignant tumor composed of immature myeloid precursor cells and myeloblast. Most MSs occur in the subperiosteal region of the bone, with the skull, sternum, ribs, and proximal portions of the long bones being the common sites of involvement. It is thought that the MS tumor originates in the bone marrow, and traverses the Haversian canals to reach the subperiosteum. Various reports have also described the involvement of the liver, spleen, brain, heart, pharynx, uterus, vagina, skin, kidney, and other soft tissues in the formation of the tumor.
