Two cases of perforated leiomyosarcoma of Meckel's diverticulum are presented. There are only 59 cases reported in current literature, including 4 perforations. Although the condition is rare, leiomyosarcoma is the commonest tumour of Meckel's diverticulum. Its clinical presentation include abdominal pain, intestinal bleeding, abdominal mass, intestinal obstruction and less commonly, acute perforations. Both our cases presented with perforations which is unusual. Despite this late presentations both were resectable and both had no distant or local metastasis. One of our patients was 89 years o

Forty-three cases of Meckel's diverticulum (MD) encountered in an academic department of surgery over a 15-year period were reviewed. All of the patients and their general practitioners were contacted and long-term follow-up was obtained in 36 cases (85%). In 21 of 35 diverticulectomies, MD was an incidental finding. An overall complication rate of 26% was recorded over an average follow-up period of 8 years. In the asymptomatic group this rose to 30%. None of the eight cases in whom the diverticulum was not resected has developed early or late complications. Our findings suggest that an incid

Fifty-four cases of exomphalos were reviewed. After the exclusion of five cases, seven out of 25 cases of exomphalos minor had co-existing Meckel's diverticulum compared with one out of 24 cases of exomphalos major. The high incidence of Meckel's diverticulum in exomphalos minor highlights the importance of surgical rather than manual reduction of the sac contents in order to exclude the presence of viscera from the sac before division. Also, the raised incidence of Meckel's diverticulum in general may well be due to a raised incidence in exomphalos minor in particular.

Meckel's diverticula are the result of incomplete degeneration of the vitelline duct. It is generally believed that less than 5% of them become symptomatic, the frequency decreasing with age. Meckel's diverticula are most commonly manifested in children by painless lower gastrointestinal bleeding and in adults, as an inflammatory process or obstruction. Definitive diagnosis is usually made at surgery, though the Meckel's scan may suggest a diagnosis preoperatively, especially in the pediatric population. All symptomatic and pathologic Meckel's diverticula should be removed with a segment of il

Three cases, two women and one man, aged 27, 47 and 79 years with perforated peptic ulcer of Meckel's diverticulum are reported. All patients had diffuse peritonitis. The exact diagnosis of the cause of peritonitis has not been preoperatively established in any of them. In two patients cuneiform excision (diverticulectomy) was performed, and resection and anastomosis of the small intestine in the third. The female patients, aged 79, after an uneventful recovery suddenly died due to an acute heart failure on the eight day after surgery. In other patient suppuration of the wound occurred and con

The accidental finding of a carcinoid tumour in Meckel's diverticulum, a very uncommon event, triggered a physiopathological and clinical analysis of this very interesting but very rare association. The value of systematic identification and removal of the diverticulum during laparotomy is underlined.

The 99mtechnetium pertechnetate nuclear red blood cell scan proved to be a valuable diagnostic tool in localizing the site of bleeding, from a Meckel's diverticulum, in a 41-year-old man. When peptic ulcer or colorectal disease has been excluded by panendoscopy, bleeding Meckel's diverticulum remains a diagnostic consideration, even in adults. We provide a 20-year list of bleeding Meckel's diverticula reported in adults, along with a brief discussion.

The author presents a case of perforating ulcer of Meckel's diverticulum, with secondary generalized peritonitis in a young patient, admitted and operated for acute appendicitis. The therapy used is described and several semeiologic characteristics of the evolution and treatment of the case presented are discussed.

The author analysed the results of operations on 19 patients with emergency diseases of the abdominal organs caused by pathological processes in Meckel's diverticulum. The inflammatory process in the diverticulum led to acute obstruction of the small intestine in 12, acute diverticulitis in 5, and peptic ulcer complicated by perforation of the intestinal wall in 2 patients. Two patients died in the postoperative period from progressing peritonitis. It was established that Meckel's diverticulum may occur in any area of the small intestine. Meckel's diverticulum detected during planned laparotom
