Thalassaemia in Azerbaijan.

beta thalassaemia is present throughout the southern regions of the former USSR. We have defined the clinical picture of the disorder, the spectrum of beta thalassaemia mutations, and the role of customary consanguineous marriage in Azerbaijan, where thalassaemia presents a public health problem of the same order as that in Greece. Contrary to earlier suggestions, we found that the common form of the disorder is typically severe. Typical Turkish, Mediterranean, Azeri, Kurdish, and Asian Indian mutations were found, consistent with the history of the region. The common Mediterranean beta 0 thal

Contaminants of emerging concern in Mediterranean groundwater: The more we analyse, the more diversity we observe.

A review of case studies investigating contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in Mediterranean groundwater (2006-2024) highlights where there are few investigations or limited CECs analysed, there is important information missing on CEC diversity. This was evident from the relatively high diversity of CECs reported in the 30 publications on Spanish groundwaters, including 127 types of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), 36 pesticides and 26 industrial products. In comparison, publications from other Mediterranean countries were fewer (≤ 7/country, and ≤ 3/country for southern

ERGA-BGE Genomes of Culex laticinctus, Culex modestus, Culex perexiguus, and Culex theileri: Unveiling the Genomes of the Key Vectors of West Nile Virus in the Mediterranean Basin.

The reference genomes of Culex laticinctus, Culex modestus, Culex perexiguus, and Culex theileri offer crucial resources for exploring the genetic basis of vector competence for different pathogens, including the emerging West Nile virus. Each genome was assembled into three contiguous chromosomal pseudomolecules. These chromosome-level assemblies encompass 834, 698, 436, and 934 Mb, respectively. They are composed of 3,284, 4,220, 1,917, and 2,704 contigs and 312, 979, 475, and 709 scaffolds, with contig N50 values of 434, 313, 473, and 770 kb, and scaffold N50 values of 292, 246, 150, and 28

Geo-temporal distribution and biotechnological valorization of indigenous soil yeasts in Mediterranean agroecosystems for sustainable farming solutions.

This paper focuses on the environmental distribution (geographical and temporal) of indigenous yeast between four Mediterranean agroecosystems (barley, faba bean, olive, and vine) and assesses their efficacy as biofertilisers. The analysis indicates high seasonal variations and spatial heterogeneity of yeast communities and density extended between 3 × 102 and 4.5 × 104 CFU/g of soil that depend on five determining factors, which control this distribution, namely, crop type, phenological cycles, rhizospheric effects, vertical stratification, and seasonal variation. These populations are also g

Correspondence between genetic data and leaf morphological and anatomical traits in two Mediterranean Quercus and their hybrids along environmental gradients.

Oaks are known for their frequent hybridization, a trend that generates a wide phenotypic spectrum and produces taxonomic confusion within the genus. Different approaches are needed for hybrids characterization, such as a combination of leaf morphological and anatomical traits supported by molecular data. Here, we characterized some morphological and anatomical (veins and stomata) leaf traits and their changes across a temperature gradient of two closely related Mediterranean Quercus species (Q. faginea Lam. and Q. pyrenaica Willd.) and their hybrids, preliminarily identified from molecular ma

Mediterranean Y-chromosome 2.0-why the Y in the Mediterranean is still relevant in the postgenomic era.

CONTEXT: Due to its unique paternal inheritance, the Y-chromosome has been a highly popular marker among population geneticists for over two decades. Recently, the advent of cost-effective genome-wide methods has unlocked information-rich autosomal genomic data, paving the way to the postgenomic era. This seems to have announced the decreasing popularity of investigating Y-chromosome variation, which provides only the paternal perspective of human ancestries and is strongly influenced by genetic drift and social behaviour. OBJECTIVE: For this special issue on population genetics of the Medite

Prospects for the biological control of Tuta absoluta in tomatoes of the Mediterranean basin.

Since its detection in the Mediterranean basin at the end of 2006 and later in other European countries, the South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), has become a serious threat to tomato crops. In newly infested areas, it is especially problematic during the first years of its presence. Nevertheless, after 2-3 years, the incidence of T. absoluta has become less severe in certain areas. There are several factors contributing to this decline, such as the increase in growers' knowledge of pest behaviour and biology and the correct application of integrated pest control strategies.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in a patient receiving infliximab.

Leishmaniasis is endemic in the Mediterranean region, and the prevalence of latent infection in this area is high. Treatment with tumour necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists represents a major breakthrough in the treatment of several inflammatory diseases, including psoriasis. Reports describing opportunistic leishmaniasis in European patients treated with TNF-α antagonist drugs are rapidly accumulating. We describe a case of cutaneous leishmaniasis in a patient treated with infliximab and corticosteroids.

Recent speciation of Capsella rubella from Capsella grandiflora, associated with loss of self-incompatibility and an extreme bottleneck.

Flowering plants often prevent selfing through mechanisms of self-incompatibility (S.I.). The loss of S.I. has occurred many times independently, because it provides short-term advantages in situations where pollinators or mates are rare. The genus Capsella, which is closely related to Arabidopsis, contains a pair of closely related diploid species, the self-incompatible Capsella grandiflora and the self-compatible Capsella rubella. To elucidate the transition to selfing and its relationship to speciation of C. rubella, we have made use of comparative sequence information. Our analyses indicat

[Olive oil: influence and benefits on some pathologies].

The olive tree has been one of the agriculture bases in Mediterranean countries with a great economic and social significance. The oil derivative from it fruit can be classified in different kinds according with their quality, being the highest exponent the so-called pure olive oil that contribute in unquestionable benefits for the maintenance of health, illness prevention as well as a better evolution when the illness is present. There are some studies that prove these benefits in pathologies like cancer specially breast and stomach cancer (colon, endometrium and ovary cancer too). Gastrointe

Trace metals in seagrass, algae and molluscs from an uncontaminated area in the Mediterranean.

The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were measured in specimens of four marine organisms--the seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile, the brown algae Padina pavonica (L.) Thivy, and the two gastropod molluscs Monodonta turbinata Born and Patella caerulea L.--selected as possible cosmopolitan biomonitors of trace metals in the Mediterranean area. The organisms were collected at five coastal sites in Favignana Island (Sicily, Italy), an area virtually uninfluenced by anthropogenic activities. In order to gain a more complete picture of both the environmental conditions of the experimenta

Seroprevalence and risk factors of canine leishmaniasis in Mediterranean countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis (2000-2024).

Caused by Leishmania infantum, canine leishmaniasis (CanL) is endemic in the Mediterranean basin and can threaten public health. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize and standardize existing knowledge about CanL in the Mediterranean by determining global prevalence recorded in the last decades and the potential risk factors associated. According to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes) protocol, systematic searches were conducted in three databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct. Between 2000 and 2024, ninety-six

Chemical composition of PM10 at a rural site in the western Mediterranean and its relationship with the oxidative potential.

A comprehensive chemical characterization (water-soluble ions, organic and elemental carbon, water- and methanol-soluble organic carbon, levoglucosan, and major and trace metals) of PM10 samples collected in a rural area located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula was performed. Additionally, the oxidative potential of the samples, used as an indicator of aerosol toxicity, was determined by the ascorbic acid (OPAA) and dithiothreitol (OPDTT) assays. The average concentration of PM10 during the study period, spanning from late winter to early spring, was 20.2 ± 10.8 μg m-3. Nitrate, carbo

Towards harmonisation of entomological surveillance in the Mediterranean area.

BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean Basin is historically a hotspot for trade, transport, and migration. As a result, countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea share common public health threats. Among them are vector-borne diseases, and in particular, mosquito-borne viral diseases are prime candidates as (re)emerging diseases and are likely to spread across the area. Improving preparedness and response capacities to these threats at the regional level is therefore a major issue. The implementation of entomological surveillance is, in particular, of utmost importance. Guidance in designing entomol

World No Tobacco Day 2018: towards a sustainable campaign involving the cardiovascular community (Editorial).

The movement to reduce tobacco use has been gathering pace in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), as governments aim at implementing legislation to encourage populations to turn away from tobacco consumption and avoid the associated health risks. Indeed, within the Region it was in 2007 that Egyptian cardiologist Prof. Hamdi El Sayed, former member of parliament and former head of the Medical Syndicate, successfully proposed legislation for the implementation of graphic health warnings on tobacco packets covering 50% of visible packaging. In 2011, cardiologist Dr George Saade, former focal…

Another possible risk for the Mediterranean Sea? Aspergillus sydowii discovered in the Port of Genoa (Ligurian Sea, Italy).

Aspergillus sydowii is a cosmopolitan fungus that has been responsible for the mass destruction of coral in the Caribbean Sea over the last 15years. To our knowledge, this study has found the first case of A. sydowii in the Mediterranean Sea, in marine-bottom sediments, water and calcareous shells of bivalve molluscs sampled during a campaign to characterise the mycobiota in the Port of Genoa (Italy). The area is characterised by adverse environmental conditions (high turbidity, organic pollution and high concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds). These parameters, in combination wi

Antibiotic consumption in southern and eastern Mediterranean hospitals: results from the ARMed project.

OBJECTIVES: The intensity of antibiotic use in hospital settings is recognized as possibly the most important factor for the selection of antimicrobial resistance. Hospitals are therefore being encouraged to undertake surveillance and benchmarking of antimicrobial consumption patterns with a view to identify and rectify possible evidence of overuse or misuse. METHODS: As part of the ARMed project, antibiotic use in 25 hospitals from the southern and eastern Mediterranean countries of Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Malta, Tunisia and Turkey was assessed prospectively for 24 months during the
