Team working to improve outcome in vestibular schwannoma surgery.

The concept of the 'learning curve' in the early years of consultant appointment is no longer acceptable and yet, for most complex operation … cases were carefully selected at first. In this article, we discuss our experience with consultant mentoring, and compare the results of the first 100 translabyrinthine acoustic neuroma operations performed under this system with the first cohort of a similar number of patients published from Cambridge in 1989.

Development of a Virtual Transition Program for Adolescents and Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes: Three-Stage User-Centered Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with type 1 diabetes (T1D) face a heightened risk of care gaps and preventable complications during the transition from pediatric to adult care. AYAs from low-income families are more likely to experience poor outcomes. Care guidelines for T1D now recommend a transition program beginning several years prior to anticipated independence. However, existing transition programs often require substantial resources, limiting their scalability and accessibility. OBJECTIVE: We used a human-centered design approach to develop and refine a low-cost, virtua

The Trodden and Untrodden Path: Mentorship, Innovation, and Leadership in Dermatology.

Leadership in dermatology develops through both established and novel pathways. As requested by the Editor of this edition of the Dermatologic Clinics, using the career of Darrell S. Rigel, MD, MS, as a framework, this article explores how mentorship, early service, clinical expertise, communication, volunteer leadership, educational platform-building, and succession shape physician leadership. The trodden path represents the established structures of mentorship, training, professional societies, and service. The untrodden path begins when a physician recognizes an unmet need and builds someth

Barriers to and facilitators of success for early and Mid-Career professionals focused on bipolar disorder: A global needs survey by the International Society for Bipolar Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The International Society for Bipolar Disorders created the Early Mid-Career Committee (EMCC) to support career development of the next generation of researchers and clinicians specializing in bipolar disorder (BD). To develop new infrastructure and initiatives, the EMCC completed a Needs Survey of the current limitations and gaps that restrict recruitment and retention of researchers and clinicians focused on BD. METHODS: The EMCC Needs Survey was developed through an iterative process, relying on literature and content expertise of workgroup members. The survey included 8 doma

Prediction of Adherence to an Online Wellness Program for People with Mobility Limitations: A Machine Learning Approach.

Background/Objectives: People with mobility limitations face disproportionately high rates of chronic health conditions and demonstrate lower adherence to wellness interventions. Digital programs such as MENTOR offer accessible alternatives but often face high rates of attrition. This study applied machine learning (ML) methods to predict adherence to the eight-week MENTOR telewellness program and identify key predictors of participant attendance. Methods: Data were drawn from 1218 adults enrolled in MENTOR (2023-2024). Adherence was defined as the percentage of 40 sessions attended. Baseline

MOSAIC (MOthers' AdvocateS In the Community) for pregnant women and mothers of children under 5 with experience of intimate partner violence: A pilot randomized trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and motherhood increase the risk for long-term exposure to physical, psychological and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV; sexual or physical violence by current or former partners). Pregnant women and mothers with children under 5 who have experienced IPV exhibit poor physical and mental health and obstetric outcomes. Depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are the two most common mental health consequences of IPV. There is good evidence that women with good social support have better mental health and IPV outcomes. METHODS: This study will develop MOther

The value of a shared lab: Our insights.

Tackling scientific questions benefits from different points of view. Coleading a lab by two scientists may stimulate scientific discussion while also providing a different form of mentorship. Here, we share our experience in running a joint lab and discuss how this form of dual leadership contributes to collaborative science.

Teacher Coaching: Increasing Deaf Students' Active Engagement Through Flexible Instructional Arrangements.

The study examined the effects of a coaching intervention on teachers' ability to implement academically responsive instruction through flexible instructional arrangements in self-contained classrooms for students who are deaf and hard of hearing, as well as the impact of instructional arrangements on students' academic engagement. Using a changing criterion design replicated across teachers, three-teacher participants with diverse backgrounds received differentiated coaching to implement flexible instructional arrangements. Results showed that coaching had an impact on all three teachers' imp

Design and Development of a Novel Distance Learning Telementoring System Using Off-the-Shelf Materials and Software.

OBJECTIVE: To design and develop a distance learning (DL) system for the transference of laparoscopic surgery knowledge and skill constructed from off-the-shelf materials and commercially available software. INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive surgery offers significant benefits over traditional surgical procedures, but adoption rates for many procedures are low. Skill and confidence deficits are two of the culprits. DL combined with simulation training and telementoring may address these issues with scale. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The system must be built to meet the instruction requirements of …

Coaching the toxic leader.

In his work as an executive coach, psychotherapist Kets de Vries sometimes comes across bosses with mental demons. The four kinds he encounters most frequently are pathological narcissists, who are selfish and entitled, have grandiose fantasies, and pursue power at all costs; manic-depressives, who can leave a trail of emotional blazes behind them; passive-aggressives, who shy away from confrontation but are obstructive and under-handed; and the emotionally disconnected--literal-minded people who cannot describe or even recognize their feelings. Left unchecked, these personalities can warp the

Student mental health during Summer 2022 research experiences for undergraduates (REUs): Mentorship, remote engagement, and COVID-19.

Objective: We examined how mentorship, remote participation, and COVID-19 challenges were associated with the mental health of college students participating in summer research programs. Participants: Participants were students participating in 78 National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) Sites during Summer 2022 (n = 516 students). Methods: We used multivariable generalized estimating equations that account for clustering by REU Site. Results: Students with more competent mentors had reduced depression severity. Students who spent ≥25% of their time doing

Career Development and Learning Pathways of Paralympic Coaches With a Disability.

The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the career development and learning pathways of Paralympic head coaches who previously competed as Paralympic athletes. Each coach participated in a semistructured interview. A thematic analysis of the data revealed three higher order themes, which were called becoming a coach, learning to coach, and lifelong learning and teaching. Across these themes, participants discussed interactions with other coaches and athletes with a disability, learning from mentors and coaching clinics, as well as limited formal educational opportunities they

Community-facility linkage models and maternal and infant health outcomes in Malawi's PMTCT/ART program: A cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, 3 community-facility linkage (CFL) models-Expert Clients, Community Health Workers (CHWs), and Mentor Mothers-have been widely implemented to support pregnant and breastfeeding women (PBFW) living with HIV and their infants to access and sustain care for prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT), yet their comparative impact under real-world conditions is poorly understood. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We sought to estimate the effects of CFL models on a primary outcome of maternal loss to follow-up (LTFU), and secondary outcomes of maternal longitu
