Influences of high-level atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury on methylmercury accumulation in maize (Zea mays L.).

Maize (Zea mays L.) leaves play an important role in stomatal uptake and surface adsorption of atmospheric mercury (Hg). However, the influence of atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) on methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in maize plants is poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a field open-top chambers (OTCs) experiment and a soil Hg-enriched experiment to investigate the response of MeHg accumulation in maize tissues to different GEM levels in the air. Maize upper leaves had a higher average MeHg concentration (0.21 ± 0.08 ng g-1) than bottom leaves (0.15 ± 0.05 ng g-1) in the

Methylmercury exposure during the vulnerable window of the cerebrum in postnatal developing rats.

The developing brain is known to be sensitive to the toxic effects of methylmercury (MeHg). The effects of toxic levels of MeHg exposure during the most seemingly vulnerable window of the cerebrum are not well studied. In this study, we aimed to examine the specific effects of toxic levels of MeHg on neurobehavior, neurodegeneration, and selenoenzyme activity in the cerebrum of infant rats. Male Wistar rats (n = 8/group) were orally treated with MeHg at an acute toxic dose (8 mg Hg/kg/day) for 10 consecutive days starting on postnatal day 14 (P14). The MeHg-exposed rats showed a significant re

A Study on Hair Mercury Levels of University Students.

Total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations were measured in hair of 98 Chinese university students to study their levels of Hg exposure and influencing factors. The results showed that Hg exposure for university students was at a low level with concentrations lower than the USEPA recommended reference level (1 µg/g) across all hair samples. The percentage of MeHg to THg (%MeHg) in hair was about 50%, lower than the previously reported value of 70-100%, probably associated with the low %MeHg in the diet of university students. Fish and rice consumption were not a primary factor

Sensitive determination of bioaccessible mercury in complex matrix samples by combined photochemical vapor generation and solid phase microextraction coupled with microwave induced plasma optical emission spectrometry.

The photochemical generation technique of mercury vapor (PCVG) coupled with headspace solid phase microextraction (SPME) and microwave induced plasma optical emission spectrometry (MIP-OES) has been developed and successfully applied for fast and sensitive determination of mercury in complex matrix samples. Mercury vapor was generated by UV photo-reduction of inorganic mercury and methylmercury to mercury vapor in 5% (v/v) formic acid with subsequent gas-liquid separation and preconcentration by solid phase microextraction. A stopped-flow mode of the PCVG-SPME unit was employed with the aim of

Variations in Tissue Mercury Contents in Three Species of Adult Salamanders in Streams in Western Maryland.

The purpose of this study was to improve our understanding of the relationship between mercury in three species of adult salamanders and relatively pristine first-order streams in western Maryland. We measured the tissue mercury content of 106 northern two-lined salamanders (Eurycea bislineata bislineata), 111 northern dusky (Desmognathus fuscus), and 107 Allegheny mountain dusky (Desmognathus ocrophaeus) salamanders collected during three sampling periods. Averaged over our entire data set, northern two-lined salamanders had significantly greater tissue mercury contents (29.57 ± 1.32 ng g-1)

Optimization of pretreatment procedure for MeHg determination in sediments and its applications.

Methylmercury (MeHg) in sediment is difficult to be determined due to its low concentration and binding compounds like sulfide and organic matter. Moreover, wet sediment samples have been suggested to behave differently from certified reference materials in MeHg analysis. Optimal pretreatment procedure for MeHg determination in sediments has not been ascertained and whether the procedure could apply to sediment samples with complex matrix merits further research. This work firstly compared recovery results of five pretreatment procedures for MeHg determination using ERM-CC580. Using the optima

Dimethylmercury in Floodwaters of Mercury Contaminated Rice Paddies.

Dimethyl mercury (CH3HgCH3, DMeHg) has been observed in upwelling marine environments and the deep ocean. However, little is known about the occurrence and mechanisms of DMeHg formation in freshwater environments. In this study, concentrations of dissolved gaseous DMeHg were investigated in floodwaters of rice paddies in China that have been contaminated by mercury from mining. Values of DMeHg in rice paddies were compared with measurements from nearshore surface seawater in the Bohai Gulf. High concentrations of dissolved gaseous DMeHg occurred in rice paddies. Average DMeHg concentration was

Overlooked Role of Putative Non-Hg Methylators in Predicting Methylmercury Production in Paddy Soils.

Rice ingestion has been recognized as an important route of dietary exposure to neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) that is commonly synthesized in rice paddy soils. Although Hg methylators are known to regulate soil MeHg formation, the effect of non-Hg methylating communities on MeHg production remains unclear. Here, we collected 141 paddy soil samples from main rice-producing areas across China to identify associations between bacterial community composition (including both Hg and putative non-Hg methylators) and MeHg production. Results showed that the MeHg content in the paddy soils varied fro

Occurrence, speciation and fate of mercury in the sewage sludge of China.

Municipal sewage has been identified to be an important source of mercury (Hg) to the environment. However, as the major sink of sewage-borne Hg, sewage sludge (SS) remains unresolved in terms of the occurrence status of Hg species. We presented here, a nation-wide survey on the speciation of Hg in SS of China. Total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were detected in all SS samples, within ranges of 0.4-12.4 mg/kg and 0.1-27.0 μg/kg, respectively. Sludge-borne Hg mainly occurred in the mercury sulfide and organo-chelated phases, with only tiny portions occurring as soluble Hg. The mass loading

Mercury Speciation with Fluorescent Gold Nanocluster as a Probe.

Fluorescent nanoparticles are widely used for sensing biologically significant species. However, there are only rare reports of the discrimination or speciation of metal species. In this work, we report for the first time the speciation of mercury (Hg2+) and methylmercury (CH3Hg+) by taking advantage of the fluorescence feature of folic-acid-capped gold nanoclusters (FA-AuNCs). FA-Au NCs exhibit an average size of 2.08 ± 0.15 nm and a maximum emission at λex/λem = 280/440 nm with a quantum yield of 27.3%. It is interesting that Hg2+ causes a significant quench of the fluorescence of FA-Au NCs,

Methylmercury and total mercury content in soft tissues of two bird species wintering in the Baltic Sea near Gdansk, Poland.

Of the various forms of Hg occurring in nature, (mono) methylmercury (MeHg) is an especially toxic form and practically all forms of Hg can be converted into MeHg as a result of natural processes. Total mercury (THg) and MeHg were determined in tissues of two piscivorous birds: razorbill Alca torda and black-throated loon Gavia arctica to provide baseline data on current mercury concentrations for liver, kidneys and pectoral muscle mercury concentrations of birds which winter on the south Baltic Sea coast. Intra and inter-specific comparisons were carried out. The study is conducted between wi

Mercury in tunas and blue marlin in the North Pacific Ocean.

Models and data from the North Pacific Ocean indicate that mercury concentrations in water and biota are increasing in response to (global or hemispheric) anthropogenic mercury releases. In the present study, we provide an updated record of mercury in yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) caught near Hawaii that confirms an earlier conclusion that mercury concentrations in these fish are increasing at a rate similar to that observed in waters shallower than 1000 m. We also compiled and reanalyzed data from bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) caught near Hawaii in the

Biogeochemical controls on mercury methylation in the Allequash Creek wetland.

We measured mercury methylation potentials and a suite of related biogeochemical parameters in sediment cores and porewater from two geochemically distinct sites in the Allequash Creek wetland, northern Wisconsin, USA. We found a high degree of spatial variability in the methylation rate potentials but no significant differences between the two sites. We identified the primary geochemical factors controlling net methylmercury production at this site to be acid-volatile sulfide, dissolved organic carbon, total dissolved iron, and porewater iron(II). Season and demethylation rates also appear to

Ionic Strength Differentially Affects the Bioavailability of Neutral and Negatively Charged Inorganic Hg Complexes.

Mercury (Hg) bioavailability to bacteria in marine systems is the first step toward its bioamplification in food webs. These systems exhibit high salinity and ionic strength that will both alter Hg speciation and properties of the bacteria cell walls. The role of Hg speciation on Hg bioavailability in marine systems has not been teased apart from that of ionic strength on cell wall properties, however. We developed and optimized a whole-cell Hg bioreporter capable of functioning under aerobic and anaerobic conditions and exhibiting no physiological limitations of signal production to changes i

Distribution and characteristics of methylmercury in surface sediment in Minamata Bay.

This study was carried out to evaluate the present-day chemical properties of methylmercury in surface sediment in Minamata Bay where a dredging project was completed 28years ago. Present-day sediment from Minamata Bay consists of sandy silt, and the average loss-on-ignition in surface sediment was 7.0±2.3%. The average methylmercury concentrations in the upper sediment layers were significantly higher than those in the lower sediment layers. Currently, the concentrations in sediments in Minamata Bay do not exceed the Japanese regulatory standard value for mercury. The average concentration of

Effects of nitrate addition on water column methylmercury in Occoquan Reservoir, Virginia, USA.

Mercury bioaccumulation in aquatic biota poses a widespread threat to human and environmental health. Methylmercury (MeHg), the toxic form of mercury, tends to build up under anaerobic conditions in the profundal zones of lakes. In this study we performed a two-year assessment of spatial and temporal patterns of dissolved oxygen, nitrate, MeHg, manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) in Occoquan Reservoir, a large run-of-the-river drinking water reservoir in Virginia, USA. A tributary to the reservoir receives input of nitrate-rich tertiary-treated wastewater that enhances the oxidant capacity of bottom

Effects of coastal managed retreat on mercury biogeochemistry.

We investigated the impact of managed retreat on mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry at a site subject to diffuse contamination with Hg. We collected sediment cores from an area of land behind a dyke one year before and one year after it was intentionally breached. These sediments were compared to those of an adjacent mudflat and a salt marsh. The concentration of total mercury (THg) in the sediment doubled after the dyke was breached due to the deposition of fresh sediment that had a smaller particle size, and higher pH. The concentration of methylmercury (MeHg) was 27% lower in the sediments after

Proteomics of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and X-ray absorption spectroscopy to investigate mercury methylation in the presence of selenium.

The effects of mercury added as Hg(2+) and selenium as selenite to cultures of the sulfate reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio desulfuricans were investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. There was no significant difference in the growth curves in comparison to control except in the 0.5 μM Hg-6.3 μM Se combined system in which Hg methylation was significantly reduced. A significant decrease in the production of methylmercury indicates a disruption of the methylation process due to the presence of the relatively high concentrations of Se in the system, suggesting a modification of the b

[Methylmercury: existing recommendations; methods of analysing and interpreting the results; economic evaluation].

The beneficial effects of fish consumption are well- known. Nevertheless, there is worldwide concern regard methylmercury concentrations in fish, which is why many countries such as the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and numerous European countries have made fish consumption recommendations for their populations, particularly vulnerable groups, in order to México methylmercury intake. Blood and hair are the best biological samples for measuring methylmercury. The most widely-used method to analyse methylmercury is cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry, although there are als
