Soft tissue and bone infections of the hand often require long-term treatment. In most cases this will result in a poor function. In a case of infection after aponeurectomy it is shown that early revision and local therapy with Gentamycin-PMMA-minichains bring very good results, as we have already shown in more than two hundred cases.

The biocompatibility of two implant materials, vitallium and poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA), was evaluated in an animal model in which bone formation and resorption are independent of each other. Neither material accelerated resorption, but formation was inhibited 12% by vitallium and 38% by PMMA. When three PMMA preparations varying in monomer content were tested, the data exhibited a dose-response relation, suggesting that inhibition of bone formation was due to the presence of residual monomer.

Although total hip arthroplasty stabilized by cement has been a great step forward, loosening is becoming more and more frequent and constitutes a significant problem. This is a report of the design of a non-cemented prosthesis in which fixation of the prosthesis is secured by the in-growth of newly-formed bone into the irregularities of the metal. In more than 2000 cases with a follow-up of 5 1/2 years, this fixation design proves to be sound. The complications are relatively rare and the results are generally good.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist on outcomes of calvarial reconstruction in cancer patients, including the relative efficacy of various cranioplasty materials, and risk factors for complications.

We report 43 consecutive surgically treated patients with pyogenic (37 patients) and tuberculous (6 patients) osteomyelitis of the thoracic and lumbar spine encountered within an 8-year period, including 1 with late recurrence after 15 months. A clinical study of fractures of the odontoid process showed a 62 per cent failure on union. Shigella is associated with a significant burden of disease worldwide among individuals of all ages and is the major cause of moderate and severe diarrhea in children under five years of age in low- and middle-income countries. Several candidate vaccines against Shigella species are currently under clinical development. Two-hybrid products of bentonite intercalated carbohydrate polymers (chitosan (BE.P.CH) and 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer (BE/P.HEMA/MMA)) were synthesized as enhanced adsorbents for methyl parathion pesticide (MPP). The intercalation processes induced the affinity and the capacity of bentonite achieving the best value at pH 8. Data concerning the safety of sacroplasty in terms of cement leakage is scarce. We investigated how the thickness of an adhesive layer between two Co-Cr alloy plates affected the mode I fracture toughness of dental adhesive resin by varying the type of resin using a double cantilever beam (DCB) test.
