COVID-19 Case Fatality Rates in the Texas Prison System.

The case fatality rate (CFR) is an important metric in the correctional setting because it permits assessment of the lethality of an infectious agent independent of its underlying variations in transmissibility and incidence. Several studies have reported that incarceration is associated with both increased COVID-19 incidence and mortality. CFR, sometimes referred to as infection fatality rate for COVID-19, was used to compare mortality in a population at two points in time. A retrospective cohort study design was used to assess age-adjusted mortality among people diagnosed with COVID-19 in th

psudo: Exploring Multi-Channel Biomedical Image Data with Spatially and Perceptually Optimized Pseudocoloring.

Over the past century, multichannel fluorescence imaging has been pivotal in myriad scientific breakthroughs by enabling the spatial visualization of proteins within a biological sample. With the shift to digital methods and visualization software, experts can now flexibly pseudocolor and combine image channels, each corresponding to a different protein, to explore their spatial relationships. We thus propose psudo, an interactive system that allows users to create optimal color palettes for multichannel spatial data. White blood cell recovery after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation predicts clinical outcome.

To determine whether outcome after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) could be estimated by using peripheral white blood cell count (WBC) as a metric that integrates several aspects of HCT recovery, we conducted a retrospective study of 1,109 adult patients who underwent first allogeneic HCT from 2003 through 2009. WBC at 1-3 months after HCT was categorized as low (10 × 10(9) cells/L). Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were lower for patients with low or high WBC at 1-3 months after HCT (P < 0.0001). We developed a predictive three-group risk model bas

The Role of Concussion History and Biological Sex on Pupillary Light Reflex Metrics in Adolescent Rugby Players: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Concussion examination is based primarily on clinical evaluation and symptomatic reporting. Pupillary light reflex (PLR) metrics may provide an objective physiological marker to inform concussion diagnosis and recovery, but few studies have assessed PLR, and normative data are lacking, particularly for adolescents. Aim: To capture PLR data in adolescent rugby players and examine the effects of concussion history and biological sex. Design: Cross-sectional. Methods: Male and female adolescent rugby union players aged 16 to 18 years were recruited at the start of the 2022-2023 playin

Edge-Community Entropy Is a Novel Neural Correlate of Aging and Moderator of Fluid Cognition.

Decreased neuronal specificity of the brain in response to cognitive demands (i.e., neural dedifferentiation) has been implicated in age-related cognitive decline. Investigations into functional connectivity analogs of these processes have focused primarily on measuring segregation of nonoverlapping networks at rest. Here, we used an edge-centric network approach to derive entropy, a measure of specialization, from spatially overlapping communities during cognitive task fMRI. Using Human Connectome Project Lifespan data (713 participants, 36-100 years old, 55.7% female), we characterized a pat

A study of riders' noise exposure on Bay Area Rapid Transit trains.

Excessive noise exposure may present a hazard to hearing, cardiovascular, and psychosomatic health. Mass transit systems, such as the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, are potential sources of excessive noise. The purpose of this study was to characterize transit noise and riders' exposure to noise on the BART system using three dosimetry metrics. We made 268 dosimetry measurements on a convenience sample of 51 line segments. Dosimetry measures were modeled using linear and nonlinear multiple regression as functions of average velocity, tunnel enclosure, flooring, and wet weather condition

Performance Drift in a Nationally Deployed Population Health Risk Algorithm in the US Veterans Health Administration.

IMPORTANCE: Clinical risk algorithms inform clinical decision support and system-level quality metrics. However, algorithm performance can drift over time and possibly promote misinformed decision-making and resource allocation. The Veterans Health Administration (VA) Care Assessment Needs (CAN) algorithm is a nationally deployed population risk algorithm used to predict risk of 90-day hospitalization and/or mortality and to allocate resources for more than 5 million veterans annually. However, drift affecting the VA CAN has not been assessed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of drift in the

Untangling the causes of elongation artifacts in dual flat-panel PET: limited angular sampling versus parallax error.

OBJECTIVE: Dual flat-panel PET systems provide easy patient access and high sensitivity when the panels are close together. Their images are however susceptible to elongation artifacts due to incomplete angular sampling and parallax error. These effects are reduced by respectively including depth-of-interaction (DOI) and time-of-flight (TOF) information. To guide system design, a framework is needed that predicts which effect dominates for a given object size and field-of-view (FOV) location. This study investigates the impact of TOF and DOI on elongation artifacts for a variety of phantoms in

Objective oculomotor, vestibular, reaction time, and cognitive signatures of vestibular migraine.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate oculomotor, vestibular, reaction time, and cognitive (OVRT-C) function in patients with vestibular migraine (VM) using objective eye-tracking-based metrics and to identify patterns of dysfunction relative to healthy controls. BACKGROUND: Vestibular migraine is a common yet underdiagnosed cause of vertigo. Diagnosis remains primarily clinical, because objective neurologic and vestibular findings are often absent or inconsistent. Quantitative methods capable of capturing the multisystem manifestations of VM may improve objective characterization of the disorder. METHODS:

Evaluation of Rotation Reduction Features in Infant and Extended-Use Convertible Child Restraint Systems during Frontal and Rear Impacts.

A correctly used child restraint system (CRS) is associated with a substantial reduction of injury and mortality risks in motor vehicle crashes and epidemiologic data suggests that toddlers are provided greater protection when restrained in a rearward-facing CRS compared to a forward-facing CRS. Some 'extended-use' European CRS models can accommodate children up to six years rearward-facing and have a support (load) leg and/or a pair of lower (Swedish) tethers to reduce rotation during frontal and rear impacts, respectively. Laboratory studies have found that a support leg reduces head and nec

The heart transplant allocation change attenuates but does not eliminate blood group O waitlist outcome disadvantage.

BACKGROUND: Patients with blood group O have historically been disadvantaged in the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) heart transplant allocation system. We sought to determine whether the new UNOS allocation system implemented in 2018 had an impact on waitlist and post-transplant outcomes among blood groups. METHODS: Using the UNOS database we included all adult patients listed and transplanted with first-time single-organ heart transplant between 10/17/15 and 10/1/21. For post-transplant outcomes, we separately evaluated all adult patients transplanted with the same time-frame. We use

Dosimetric impact of density overrides on treatment planning for prostate MR-guided adaptive radiotherapy.

Adaptive radiation therapy (ART) using magnetic resonance (MR)-guided linear accelerators (MR-LINACs) is an emerging approach that allows for daily treatment plan adaptation. However, bulk density overrides (BDOs), used during adaptive planning (e.g., on the Elekta Unity system), may introduce dosimetric uncertainties compared to reference computed tomography (CT) images by approximating electron densities (ED). This study aims to evaluate and quantify the dosimetric differences between BDO-based plans and corresponding reference CT-based plans within the Monaco treatment planning system (TPS)

Geometrically focused training and evaluation of organs-at-risk segmentation via deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Deep learning methods are promising in automating segmentation of organs at risk (OARs) in radiotherapy. However, the lack of a geometric indicator for dosimetry accuracy remains to be a problem. This issue is particularly pronounced in specific radiotherapy treatments where only the proximity of structures to the radiotherapy target affects the dose planning. In cervical cancer high dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy, treatment planning is motivated by limiting dose to the hottest 2 cubic centimeters (D2cm3) of the OARs. Similarly, Ethos online adaptive radiotherapy system prioritizes

Home-Based REM Sleep Without Atonia in Patients with Parkinson's Disease: A Post Hoc Analysis of the ZEAL Study.

REM sleep behavioral disorder (RBD) is of increasing interest in Parkinson's disease (PD). Previous studies exploring the association between REM sleep without atonia (RWA) and clinical PD features or other objective sleep metrics are scarce and have used PSG findings. A mobile electroencephalography (EEG)/electrooculography (EOG) recording system with two channels can objectively measure sleep parameters, including RWA, during natural sleep at home. We investigated whether RWA measured on a portable recording device at home could be associated with clinical PD features or other sleep metrics

Longitudinal association of retinal morphology and white matter progression in retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukoencephalopathy and systemic manifestations.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukoencephalopathy and systemic manifestations (RVCL-S) is a rare small vessel disease marked by vision loss and neurocognitive deterioration. We sought to characterize the relatedness of the underlying retinal structure and cerebral disease. METHODS: Participants with RVCL-S underwent optical coherence tomography (OCT) and brain MRI at baseline and 2 years. Total macular volume (TMV) and central subfield thickness (CST) were generated from OCT images. Neuroimaging metrics of ischemic brain injury included white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volum

Non-invasive biomarkers for detecting progression toward hypovolemic cardiovascular instability in a lower body negative pressure model.

Occult hemorrhages after trauma can be present insidiously, and if not detected early enough can result in patient death. This study evaluated a hemorrhage model on 18 human subjects, comparing the performance of traditional vital signs to multiple off-the-shelf non-invasive biomarkers. A validated lower body negative pressure (LBNP) model was used to induce progression towards hypovolemic cardiovascular instability. Traditional vital signs included mean arterial pressure (MAP), electrocardiography (ECG), plethysmography (Pleth), and the test systems utilized electrical impedance via commercia

Degeneration of Melanin-Containing Structures Observed Longitudinally in the Eyes of SOD1-/- Mice Using Intensity, Polarization, and Spectroscopic OCT.

PURPOSE: Melanin plays an important function in maintaining eye health, however there are few metrics that can be used to study retinal melanin content in vivo. METHODS: The slope of the spectral coefficient of variation (SSCoV) is a novel biomarker that measures chromophore concentration by analyzing the local divergence of spectral intensities using optical coherence tomography (OCT). This metric was validated in a phantom and applied in a longitudinal study of superoxide dismutase 1 knockout (SOD1-/-) mice, a model for wet and dry age-related macular degeneration. We also examined a new fe
