Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery remains the major surgical option for individuals with medically complicated obesity. The importance of preoperative evaluation to permit identification of micronutrient deficiencies is being re-evaluated. The risk of complications related to pregnancy after gastric bypass supports careful follow-up. Micronutrient deficiencies are common in postoperative gastric bypass patients, despite the suggested use of routine vitamin and mineral supplements after surgery. Copper deficiency must be considered as an origin for visual disorders after gastric bypass. Vitamin

BACKGROUND: In Mali, an estimated 73% of pregnant women are anaemic largely due to iron deficiency. National policy recommends women to take iron and folic acid supplements daily from first prenatal contact until 3 months postpartum. However, many pregnant women in Mali could benefit from multiple micronutrient supplements.
OBJECTIVE: To assess pregnant women's acceptability of and adherence to a daily multiple micronutrient supplementation scheme compared with the current daily iron and folic acid supplementation scheme.
DESIGN: Seventy pregnant women were allocated to either the daily mult

Micronutrient deficiencies are a major problem throughout the world and hundreds of millions of the world's population are affected by micronutrient deficiency disorders. In Europe the prevalence of clinical micronutrient deficiency disorders is less than that in the Third World. However, marginal deficiency of some of the micronutrients might be involved in the aetiology of many of the so-called lifestyle diseases, e.g. cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis. Supplementing domestic animals with micronutrients in excess of their needs could be one strategy to increase the inta…

Despite India's substantial progress in human development since its independence in 1947, 5-7% of its children have vitamin A deficiency disorders in selected geographic areas, 53% have iron deficiency anemia, and 9% have goiter. Three micronutrients--vitamin A, iron, and iodine--are among the most important of all the nutrients needed by the body because they are vital for developing normal learning and cognitive functions, immunity, work capacity, and reproductive health. The body cannot synthesize them, so they must be made available through the diet. Deficiencies of these three micronutrie…

Supplementation has many potential advantages over fortification and dietary approaches for improving micronutrient intake. Pregnant and lactating women and infants are most likely to benefit from supplementation. Recent experience with vitamin A supplementation in young children has proved to be remarkably successful. Demonstrated efficacy of vitamin A supplements for improved child survival in many settings and a technical consensus on how to implement interventions were major factors in achieving this success. Bilateral and UN agencies worked together so that in 1999 80 % of children under

Epidemiological evidence suggests that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of various forms of cancer, most likely contributable to their vitamin and mineral content. It is believed that the vitamins and minerals in these foods contribute to a reduced risk of cancer. The population of Linxian, China is known to have one of the highest rates of esophageal/gastric cardia cancer in the world. Recent intervention studies from this particular geographic area for the first time have indicated that vitamin and mineral supplementation, specifically beta-carotene, vitamin E, and se

Most micronutrient deficiencies affect relatively few people in the Caribbean; however, many Caribbean residents are affected by anemia that appears due primarily to a lack of dietary iron. While generally substantial, the prevalences of such anemia have differed a good deal from place to place and study to study, observed rates ranging from 27% to 75% in pregnant women, 19% to 55% in lactating women, and 15% to 80% in young children. Severe anemia, defined by a blood hemoglobin concentration below 8 g/dl, has been found in approximately 6% of the pregnant women and 11% of the preschool childr

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer with an increasing incidence rate worldwide and a high mortality rate. In addition to known risk factors, such as UV exposure and genetic predisposition, researchers are paying more attention to the role of diet, micronutrients, and vitamins in preventing melanoma. This review discusses the effects of selected vitamins (D, A, C, and E), trace elements, and bioactive compounds (polyphenols and omega-3 fatty acids) on biological processes related to melanoma development. The review considered both antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects, as well as effects on D…

Micronutrients are vital for human health. Wheat is a major staple crop and a significant source of minerals and B-vitamins. The impact of multifactorial climate change on their content remains largely unknown, introducing uncertainty to human nutrition and well-being. Here, we used an Ecotron to evaluate micronutrient levels in European winter wheat (Triticum aestivum var. Asory) under historical and projected climate conditions, incorporating gradients of atmospheric CO2, temperature, precipitation, and light intensity representative of ongoing climate change in Western Europe. Our findings …

Maternal undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies remain pervasive, contributing to adverse pregnancy outcomes and long-term health risks for mothers and offspring. Multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) during pregnancy has demonstrated benefits, including reduced risks of low birth weight, small-for-gestational-age births, and neonatal mortality, when compared with standard iron-folic acid supplementation. Current MMS strategies, however, often follow a standard MMS, overlooking variations in nutritional status, health profiles, and context. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents an intermediate state between normal cognitive ageing and dementia. Given the increasing dementia burden in the country, there is a critical need for early detection through the assessment of MCI. However, studies that comprehensively examined the associations between micronutrients, neuronal markers, and cognitive impairment are scarce.
METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 184 adults aged 55-85 years in Hyderabad between January 2024 and March 2025. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, biochemical, nutritiona…

Micronutrients, encompassing both vitamins and trace elements, play a central role in brain development, metabolic homeostasis, and cognitive performance from early life through old age. Rather than acting solely as enzyme cofactors or antioxidants, many of these nutrients influence transcriptional programs, shape synaptic signaling, and participate in neuroimmune and neuroendocrine crosstalk, and observational, interventional, and experimental studies now show that both deficiency and excess of specific micronutrients are linked to changes in memory, mood, attention, and executive function, a…

PURPOSE: Numerous trials have tested the impact on outcome of single high to very high doses of micronutrients as adjuvant therapy in severe critical illness and particularly in septic shock. The present review will address the recent knowledge acquired since 2023 including mainly randomized controlled trials (RCTs), but also some quality observational studies.
RECENT FINDINGS: Eighteen RCTs and nine meta-analyses were reviewed and globally confirm previous findings. Very high MN dose interventions delivered independent of a predisease deficiency in the early phase are not successful. The mos…

Background: Obesity is commonly seen as a condition of overnutrition; however, it is paradoxically associated with micronutrient deficiencies. These deficiencies are clinically relevant and may contribute to the progression of obesity-related comorbidities through interconnected pathways, including chronic low-grade inflammation, oxidative stress, gut dysbiosis, and impaired nutrient absorption. Objectives: This narrative review aims to summarize current evidence regarding the prevalence, underlying mechanisms, and clinical consequences of micronutrient deficiencies in individuals with obesity
