The prevalence and long-term effects of PTSD and moral injury in Swedish military veterans.

INTRODUCTION: In the context of international military operations, officers and soldiers are exposed to various service-related stressors that may have long-lasting effects on their health and daily functioning. This study explored (1) the prevalence of symptoms indicative of both post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and moral injury (MI), (2) the relationship between these conditions, and (3) the relationship between these conditions and a selection of background variables in Swedish military veterans who have previously been deployed in operations. METHODS: The study was a self-report surv

[Individual virtual reality trigger exposure as an add-on in the treatment of komplex PTSD - A case study].

We present the case of a patient who, as a result of multiple traumatic experiences during his military deployments and associated moral injuries, suffered from complex post-traumatic stress disorder, alienation, increased aggression potential and, primarily, intense feelings of guilt. He participated in a feasibility and acceptance study on individualised virtual reality trigger exposure in order to work with these feelings of guilt. The advantages and disadvantages of this adjuvant therapeutic approach are subsequently discussed.

Dental disease in South African history.

A brief history of the close association of the founding of colonial South Africa with scorbutic dental disease and its prevention is outlined. The impact of civilian dental disease upon British army recruits at the end of the 19th century laid the foundation for military dental corps in the 20th century. The deployment of the first dental field officer by the British army during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) demonstrates a further South African contribution to dental history.

Assessing United States Military Veterans' Fertility Intentions Before and After Military Service Using a Cognitive-Social Model.

INTRODUCTION: Military service represents a unique life transition occurring during early adulthood. Limited existing work suggests that military service delays childbearing for service members compared to civilians at a similar point in the life course and that this effect is stronger for women. The Cognitive-Social Model of Fertility Intentions posits that women form clearly defined fertility intentions when encountering situations across the life course that motivate cognitive attention toward childbearing enough that women form a conscious, actionable family-building plan. We aimed to qual

Semiquantitative Chest Computed Tomography Assessment Identifies Expiratory Central Airway Collapse in Symptomatic Military Personnel Deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

PURPOSE: We noted incidental findings on chest computed tomography (CT) imaging of expiratory central airway collapse (ECAC) in dyspneic patients after military deployment to southwest Asia (mainly Iraq and Afghanistan). We developed a standardized chest CT protocol with dynamic expiration to enhance diagnostic reliability and investigated demographic, clinical, and deployment characteristics possibly associated with ECAC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We calculated ECAC in 62 consecutive post-9/11 deployers with dyspnea who underwent multi-detector chest CT acquisition. ECAC was defined as ≥70% red…

Use of Peer-Based Motivational Interviewing to Reduce Alcohol Use and Sexual Violence Among U.S. Sailors: A Feasibility Study.

INTRODUCTION: Risky drinking and sexual violence (SV; i.e., sexual harassment, sexual assault) affect U.S. military personnel, potentially compromising operational readiness. Drinking and SV often co-occur in social settings, making a behavioral risk intervention focused on peers ideal for implementation with military personnel. Here, we present findings from phase 1 of a 3-phase project to develop a peer-based motivational intervention (PMI) aimed at reducing risky drinking and SV among U.S. service members. In this phase we sought to understand sailors' perspectives on alcohol use and SV in

Air evacuation under high-level biosafety containment: the aeromedical isolation team.

Military contingency operations in tropical environments and potential use of biological weapons by adversaries may place troops at risk for potentially lethal contagious infections (e.g., viral hemorrhagic fevers, plague, and zoonotic poxvirus infections). Diagnosis and treatment of such infections would be expedited by evacuating a limited number of patients to a facility with containment laboratories. To safely evacuate such patients by military aircraft and minimize the risk for transmission to air crews, caregivers, and civilians, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Dis

Suicide and suicidality surveillance in military populations: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Suicide and suicidality are a serious public health concern for military populations globally. Systematic surveillance is a key component to creating an evidence base for prevention strategies. The aim of this scoping review is to map how suicide and suicidality is surveilled in military populations, and to summarize key inclusions, limitations and gaps. METHODS: A scoping review of four databases (PubMed, PsychInfo, ProQuest and CINAHL) and a targeted grey literature search of official military websites using Google was conducted using variations of the search terms 'Suicidality,

Criminal legal involvement among recently separated veterans: Findings from the LIMBIC study.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated individual-level and neighborhood-level predictors of criminal legal involvement of veterans during the critical transition period from military to civilian life. HYPOTHESES: We hypothesized that substance use, mental health, and personality disorders will increase the incidence of criminal legal involvement, which will be highest among veterans living in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods after military discharge. METHOD: We analyzed data from a longitudinal cohort study of 418,624 veterans who entered Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health

To what extent is psychological resilience protective or ameliorative: Exploring the effects of deployment on the mental health of combat medics.

Exposure to a major traumatic stressor increases the odds of negative mental health and maladaptive behavioral outcomes not only for victims but also for 1st responders and health care professionals who are exposed to the aftermath. This study investigates the extent to which psychological resilience acts as either a Protective (i.e., vaccine-like) or an Ameliorative (i.e., antibiotic-like) factor to reduce the deleterious mental health outcomes associated with exposure to a major stressor. To do so, this pilot study focused on the understudied population of military combat medics, who are exp

The Effects of Commando Training on Stress, Cognitive Performance, and Group Behavior in Military Personnel: An Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Military personnel are exposed to a high level of operational stress that degrades their psychophysiological and cognitive performance and could impact the mission. Commando training is a unique opportunity to assess psychological, physiological, and cognitive performance in an ecological setting. METHODS: Psychological, physiological, and cognitive performance were evaluated at baseline, and before and after a 1-week commando training course consisting of exercises and night walks. Psychological factors (anxiety, subjective stress), physiological measures (heart rate variability,

Potentially morally injurious experiences and associated factors among Dutch UN peacekeepers: a latent class analysis.

Background: During peacekeeping missions, military personnel may be involved in or exposed to potentially morally injurious experiences (PMIEs), such as an inability to intervene due to a limited mandate. While exposure to such morally transgressive events has been shown to lead to moral injury in combat veterans, research on moral injury in peacekeepers is limited. Objective: We aimed to determine patterns of exposure to PMIEs and associated outcome- and exposure-related factors among Dutch peacekeepers stationed in the former Yugoslavia during the Srebrenica genocide.Method: Self-report data

Cumulative Incidence of Mental Disorders Among German Military Personnel Deployed to Iraq 2015-2018-An Epidemiological Study.

Background: There is currently no study examining the mental health consequences of deployed German service members in Iraq. The aim is, therefore, to determine the cumulative incidence and latency period until the first diagnosis of deployment-related mental disorders. We hypothesized a lower rate than for Afghanistan with 2.4%. Methods: All registered N = 1635 German military personnel who were deployed to the mission "Training support contingent Northern Iraq" between 2015 and 2018 were included. Individuals with mental disorders attributed to this deployment were identified in a central da

Pharmacogenomics testing to optimize medical countermeasures against chemical warfare agents and bacterial biothreats in military settings.

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacogenomics testing is a promising tool for strengthening medical countermeasures against military threats such as chemical warfare agents and bacterial biothreats. This review assesses the role of pharmacogenomics in military health care, highlighting distinct requirements in defence compared to civilian settings. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review (PubMed, 2010-25) to identify publications focusing on pharmacogenomics, nerve agent susceptibility, and tularemia treatment. Key search terms included combinations relevant to genetic factors affecting chemical and bacte

Meningococcal disease: has the battle been won?

Meningococcal disease is a worldwide life-threatening infection associated in many cases with debilitating long-term sequelae, both within the military and civilian populations. Military recruits are at a higher risk of acquiring this infection due to numerous factors, such as young recruits in the age group 18-25 years, high carriage rates of meningococci, communal and crowed living quarters and global deployment or training in regions with different meningococcal serogroup epidemiology. Although these increased risk factors among young recruits remain, the increased incidence of disease is n
