PURPOSE: Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, implemented sales restrictions on all flavored tobacco products in 2016 ("flavor policy") and expanded the restrictions to menthol tobacco products in 2018 ("menthol policy"). We examined data from surveys of Minnesota youth collected before and after the flavor and menthol policies. Minnesota Electronic Health Record Consortium COVID-19 Project: Informing Pandemic Response Through Statewide Collaboration Using Observational Data.

OBJECTIVE: Robust disease and syndromic surveillance tools are underdeveloped in the United States, as evidenced by limitations and heterogeneity in sociodemographic data collection throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. To monitor the COVID-19 pandemic in Minnesota, we developed a federated data network in March 2020 using electronic health record (EHR) data from 8 multispecialty health systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this serial cross-sectional study, we examined patients of all ages who received a COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction test, had symptoms of a viral illness, or received an influe…

Survival and recurrence after first cerebral infarction: a population-based study in Rochester, Minnesota, 1975 through 1989.

We used the Kaplan-Meier product limit method to estimate rates and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis with bootstrap validation to model significant independent predictors of and temporal trends in survival and recurrent stroke among 1,111 residents of Rochester, MN, who had a first cerebral infarction from 1975 through 1989. The risk of death after first cerebral infarction was 7% +/- 0.7% at 7 days, 14% +/- 1.0% at 30 days, 27% +/- 1.3% at 1 year, and 53% +/- 1.5% at 5 years. Independent risk factors for death after first cerebral infarction were age (p < 0.0001), congestive heart

Mesothelioma risks and cumulative exposure to elongate mineral particles of various sizes in Minnesota taconite mining industry.

OBJECTIVES: An excess of mesothelioma has been previously observed in iron ore miners in Northeastern Minnesota. This study explored the potential association between mesothelioma and elongate mineral particle (EMP) exposures in the Minnesota taconite mining industry, examining both regulated and non-regulated EMP dimensions. METHODS: A nested case-control study design within the Mineral Resources Health Assessment Programme cohort analysed 104 mesothelioma cases and 410 controls. Cumulative EMP exposures were assessed across various dimensional definitions, including regulated (National Inst…

Biliary tract cancers, including cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder, and ampulla of Vater cancers, rank second among hepatobiliary cancers, known for their poor prognoses. The United States has witnessed a notable increase in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma incidence. This study examines the incidence and survival outcomes of biliary tract cancers in Olmsted County, Minnesota from 1976 to 2018. Using data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP), residents aged 20 and above were analyzed across four eras. Incidence rates were calculated and adjusted for age and sex, and temporal trends were …

Trends in Maternal Weight Disparities: Statewide Differences in Rural and Urban Minnesota Residents From 2012 to 2019.

INTRODUCTION: Despite research showing substantial weight disparities along the rural-urban continuum, little work has attempted to identify … es, prepregnancy body mass index, GWG, and rurality status on 465,709 respondents who gave birth in Minnesota from 2012 to 2019. A series of regression models estimated risk differences in 1) prepregnancy weight status and 2) excessive GWG between rural and urban respondents over time, controlling for relevant covariates. RESULTS: Rural individuals had a 4 …

Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia and mortality: a population-based study in Olmsted County, Minnesota, from 2006 to 2020.

OBJECTIVES: To provide an evaluation of predictors of 6-month mortality in incident Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia cases. METHODS: A retrospective population-based study of 541 adult residents of Olmsted County, MN with monomicrobial S. aureus bacteraemia from 1 January 2006 through 31 December 2020. Multivariable Cox regression was used to investigate risk factors of 6-month mortality. RESULTS: The median (interquartile range [IQR]) age of 541 patients with S. aureus bacteraemia was 66.8 (54.4-78.5) years and 39.6% were female. The median (IQR) Charlson Comorbidity Index was 6 (3-9). Ove

On-the-farm cardiovascular risk screening among migrant agricultural workers in Southeast Minnesota: a pilot prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Accessibility to healthcare services is a major concern facing migrant agricultural workers (MAWs) in the USA. We aimed to test the feasibility of implementing cardiovascular risk screening at farm sites. METHODS: This was a pilot prospective cohort study providing on-site monthly screenings of cardiovascular risk factors. We estimated the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and evaluated the success of this approach via modified validated satisfaction surveys. RESULTS: We enrolled 38 MAWs and diagnosed 18 cases of pre-diabetes, diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia

Trends and predictors of smoking cessation after percutaneous coronary intervention (from Olmsted County, Minnesota, 1999 to 2010).

Smoke-free ordinance implementation and advances in smoking cessation (SC) treatment have occurred in the past decade; however, little is known about their impact on SC in patients with coronary artery disease. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 2,306 consecutive patients from Olmsted County, Minnesota, who underwent their first percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from 1999 to 2009, and assessed the trends and predictors of SC after PCI. Smoking status was ascertained by structured telephone survey 6 and 12 months after PCI (ending in 2010). The prevalence of smoking in patients…
