In vitro acaricidal activity of several natural products against ibex-derived Sarcoptes scabiei.

In this study we analysed the effect of the temperature, diverse strains of Bacillus thuringiensis, Lysinibacillus sphaericus and nanoformulations with essential plant oils (EONP) on the survival of Sarcoptes scabiei mites derived from naturally-infested Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica). In general, mites maintained at 12ºC survived more than those maintained at 35ºC (40.7 hr and 31.2 hr, respectively). Mites with no treatment survived 27.6 h on average. Mites treated with B. thuringiensis serovar. konkukian and geranium EONP showed significant reduction in their survival. Despite the fact that

Delay in Aceria guerreronis infestation may reduce necrosis and fruit drop in coconut trees.

The coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis, colonizes the fruit perianth, a region covered by floral bracts, which hinders its control. Its attack causes epidermal necrosis, fruit deformation, and premature fruit drop, with yield losses ranging from 10% to 70%. Infestations generally begin in fruit up to three months old. Since the age of the fruit at the time of infestation can influence not only the severity of damage but also fruit abortion, these aspects were investigated through field experiments. Fruit aged 2 to 5 months were artificially infested with A. guerreronis, and every 15 days, necrot

Properties of essential oils absorbed on the surface of cardboard pieces after using atmospheric-pressure plasma treatments to develop long-lasting Varroa miticides in honeybees (Apis mellifera).

The ectoparasitic mite, Varroa destructor is the most serious widespread pest of managed honeybees (Apis mellifera). Several acaricide products, which include essential oils, have been proposed for mite control. In this study, we aimed to apply atmospheric-pressure plasma to modify a cardboard piece surface in order to prolong the delivery of essential oils for controlling Varroa in honeybee colonies. Absorption capacity, release rates and evaporation rates of essential oils were determined. Cardboard piece showed a higher absorption capacity of cinnamon compared to citronella and clove. Surfa

Increase of scabies infestations, Norway, 2006 to 2018.

Between October and December 2018, several clinicians in Norway reported an increase in scabies diagnoses. We compared data from the Norwegian Syndromic Surveillance System on medical consultations for mite infestations with scabies treatment sales data to investigate this reported increase. From 2013 to 2018, consultations and sales of scabies treatments had almost increased by threefold, particularly affecting young adults 15-29 years. We recommend to increase awareness among clinicians to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.

Scabies in the extended care facility. Revisited.

Infestations with Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis remain a problem in nursing home patients. While the traditional signs of scabies include burrows and red papules found on the fingerwebs, chest, waist, or genitalia, the elderly or infirm patient may have only a nonspecific pruritic eruption. Epidemics in skilled care facilities may be controlled and the scabies mite even eradicated from the institutions with appropriate diagnosis and adequate treatment of both patients and personnel and their contacts.

Spatiotemporal infestation patterns of Aceria litchii Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae) in a lychee orchard in South Florida.

The lychee erinose mite (LEM), Aceria litchii, is an invasive eriophyoid mite posing notable risks to lychee (Litchi chinensis) production worldwide. First detected in Florida’s Lee County in 2018, LEM has since spread to all lychee producing counties in the state. This study investigated LEM’s dispersal dynamics following its initial detection in a lychee orchard in Homestead, Florida. A total of 190 lychee trees (‘Brewster’, ‘Mauritius’, and ‘Sweetheart’ cultivars) were monitored bi-weekly to detect new infestations and determine the LEM spread within the orchard and in the canopy of each tr

Infestation potential of Psoroptes ovis (Hering) from cattle injected with ivermectin.

Cattle scabies mites, Psoroptes ovis (Hering), surviving on cattle injected subcutaneously with ivermectin were capable of infesting to unprotected cattle 3, 5, 7, and 9 days after injection. All recipient cattle exposed to mites from vehicle-injected cattle developed reproductive colonies in 5 weeks. All recipient cattle exposed to mites from ivermectin-injected cattle at 3 and 5 days after injection developed reproductive colonies in 5 weeks. By 8 weeks, 3 of 4 and 2 of 4 recipient cattle exposed to mites from ivermectin-injected cattle 7 and 9 days after injection, respectively, developed r

Coevolution stabilizes the honey bee-Varroa destructor-virus system on islands.

For 65 years, the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor, along with the deformed wing virus (DWV) it vectors, has killed millions of Apis mellifera honey bee colonies globally. The coevolution of the 'bee-mite-virus' system in Hawaii over 17 years has been closely followed. Resistance to V. destructor evolved in the free-living honey bees on Oahu by detecting and removing a high proportion of mite-infested brood cells, as seen in other mite-resistant honey bees. On Big Island, miticides remain widely used, so on both islands, DWV prevalence decreased, but a more virulent recombinant form evolve

Variation in herbivory-induced volatiles among cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) varieties has consequences for the attraction of carnivorous natural enemies.

In response to herbivory by arthropods, plants emit herbivory-induced volatiles that attract carnivorous enemies of the inducing herbivores. Here, we compared the attractiveness of eight cucumber varieties (Cucumis sativus L.) to Phytoseiulus persimilis predatory mites after infestation of the plants with herbivorous spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) under greenhouse conditions. Attractiveness differed considerably, with the most attractive variety attracting twice as many predators as the least attractive variety. Chemical analysis of the volatiles released by the infested plants revealed si

Massive Demodicosis of the Eyes in a Patient with Sjögren Syndrome: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: Demodex mites infestation, typically asymptomatic, is a problem for patients with weakened immune systems because it often takes the form of symptomatic, massive infection. The Demodex mites play an important role in the occurrence of a range of eye surface diseases such as Demodex blepharitis, Meibomian gland dysfunctions, conjunctivitis and corneal changes. The ocular infection is closely related to the systemic invasion. Our goal was to minimize infestation and alleviate the symptoms of massive demodicosis so as to prevent further damage to the cornea. METHODS: Our research note i

Hold your breath beetle-Mites!

Respiratory gas exchange in insects occurs via a branching tracheal system. The entrances to the air-filled tracheae are the spiracles, which are gate-like structures in the exoskeleton. The open or closed state of spiracles defines the three possible gas exchange patterns of insects. In resting insects, spiracles may open and close over time in a repeatable fashion that results in a discontinuous gas exchange (DGE) pattern characterized by periods of zero organism-to-environment gas exchange. Several adaptive hypotheses have been proposed to explain why insects engage in DGE, but none have at

Ant-mediated indirect negative effects of aphids on spider mites living on the same plant.

Some aphid species are known to have mutualistic relationships with tending ants; that is, the aphids supply the ants with honeydew and are protected by the ants. Although spider mites and honeydew-producing aphids often live on the same host plant, it has not previously been determined whether the ants tending these aphids affect spider mite survival. Using replicated microcosms, each containing an artificial ant nest, we compared experimentally the survival of two-spotted spider mites on kidney bean plants with and without cowpea aphids. Our results showed significantly fewer spider mites on

Does benzyl benzoate prevent colonization of new mattresses by mites? A prospective study.

In 12 house-dust-mite-infested double beds, one of the mattresses was replaced by a new one, the other being regarded as a mite source. All new mattresses were treated in a double-blind fashion, with either benzyl benzoate or placebo before being placed on the bed as well as 1 year later. They were examined for mites and allergen concentrations over a period of 18 months. This period of time covered two mite seasons. Dust samples were taken bimonthly and analyzed by guanine test strip, microscopic mite counting, and determination of the mite allergens Der p 1 (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) a

Effectiveness of transdermal fluralaner in the treatment of Lynxacarus radovskyi (Acari: Listrophoridae) in naturally infested domestic cats.

Mites of the species Lynxacarus radovskyi, which are commonly found on domestic cats in Brazil, can cause discomfort, itching, and alopecia. The development of new, safer and more effective treatments with a broad spectrum of activity, including the use of isoxazolines, is needed. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of transdermal fluralaner in domestic cats naturally infested with L. radovskyi. Twenty cats were evaluated by trichograms and divided into two groups of 10 animals. The control group was not treated, while the treated group was given a single topical dose of flura

Brevipalpus californicus, B. obovatus, B. phoenicis, and B. lewisi (Acari: Tenuipalpidae): a review of their biology, feeding injury and economic importance.

The genus Brevipalpus includes most of the economically important species of Tenuipalpidae. Many Brevipalpus species reproduce by theletokous parthenogenesis while other species reproduce by male fertilization of female eggs. Previous researchers have determined that Brevipalpus californicus (Banks), B. obovatus Donnadieu, and B. phoenicis (Geijskes) females were haploid with two chromosomes. The life cycle and developmental times for these three species are reviewed. Longevity of each Brevipalpus species is two to three times greater than corresponding longevities of various tetranychid mites

Tolerance of the eriophyid mite Aceria salsolae to UV-A light and implications for biological control of Russian thistle.

Aceria salsolae (Acari: Eriophyidae) is being evaluated as a candidate biological control agent of Russian thistle (Salsola tragus, Chenopodiaceae), a major invasive weed of rangelands and dryland crops in the western USA. Prior laboratory host range testing under artificial lighting indicated reproduction on non-native Bassia hyssopifolia and on a native plant, Suaeda calceoliformis. However, in field tests in the native range, mite populations released on these 'nontarget' plants remained low. We hypothesized that UV-A light, which can affect behavior of tetranychid mites, would affect popul

Evaluation of methods for early detection of Tropilaelaps mites in European honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies.

Tropilaelaps mites are emerging ectoparasitic parasites of European honey bees (Apis mellifera) that pose a serious threat to apiculture and pollination security globally. There is a paucity of evidence to support current detection methods used in biosecurity programs. We conducted field trials in Papua New Guinea using 27 infested A. mellifera colonies across six apiaries to evaluate six Tropilaelaps detection methods: bump test, alcohol wash, modified rapid brood uncapping, worker brood uncapping, environmental DNA (eDNA) swabs, and sticky mats with an acaricide. eDNA swabs and acaricides wi
