The impact of the severity of vision loss on vision-related quality of life in India: an evaluation of the IND-VFQ-33.

PURPOSE: To validate the 33-item Indian Vision Functioning Questionnaire (IND-VFQ-33), a vision-specific scale, and determine the relationship between the severity of vision impairment (VI) and vision-related quality of life (VRQoL). METHODS: In this cross-sectional, observational study 273 participants with VI from cataract were recruited from a South Indian eye hospital. Participants underwent a clinical examination and completed the IND-VFQ-33 scale. The psychometric properties of the IND-VFQ-33 and its subscales were assessed using Rasch analysis, exploring key indices such as instrument

A competitive hopping model for carrier transport in disordered organic semiconductors.

Here, we formulate a theoretical transport model for disordered organic semiconductors based on the concept of competitive hopping. We demonstrate theoretically that carriers occupying states with higher energy levels have higher probabilities and higher rates of hopping to the transport energy. This model suggests a temperature (T) dependence of mobility (μ) given by lg(μ) ∝ T-n, where the low carrier density and small energetic disorder limitation of the competitive hopping model gives the non-Arrhenius lg(μ) ∝ T-2 relation, and the high carrier density and large energetic disorder limitatio

Self-reported measures of limitation in physical function in late midlife are associated with incident Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

BACKGROUND: Even small improvements in modifiable Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) risk factors could lead to a substantial … cantly associated with ADRD when allowing for change over time among those with 3, 4 or 5 versus no mobility limitations (RR 1.76; 2.36; 2.37). DISCUSSION: The results infer that an adult in midlife reporting difficulty with mobility as well as those with no mobility limitations in midlife but who later report severe limitations may be at increased risk of incident …

Randomized Controlled Trial of Exercise to Improve Walking Energetics in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mobility limitation is common and has been linked to high energetic requirements of daily activities, including walking. The study objective was to determine whether two separate forms of exercise could reduce the energy cost of walking and secondary outcomes related to activity and participation domains among older adults with mobility limitation. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Community-dwelling older adults with self-reported mobility limitation (n = 72) were randomized to 12 weeks of twice-weekly, group-based, instructor-led timing and coordination, aerobic walkin…

Mobility and wellbeing during the covid-19 lockdown. Evidence from Spain.

The lockdown of March and April 2020 declared by Spanish authorities in the Valencian Region to bending the Covid-19 curve, caused a drastic reduction of the economic activity and a severe limitation of mobility. People were asked to stay at home as much as possible. Education and administrative centers, as well as restaurants, theaters, sport arenas, etc., were closed. Work at conventional workplaces was prohibited for people who could tele-work, and students were compelled to attend classes on-line. Such limitation of mobility and spending so many time at home, could affect the wellbeing of

Rapid and Direct Determination of Methanol in Alcoholic Beverages by Ion Mobility Spectrometry.

This work introduces a new method for direct detection of methanol in alcoholic beverages, using ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), headspace sampling (HS), and Tenax adsorbent preseparation (HS-Tenax-IMS). An ionization method based on the dopant gases was employed to overcome the overlapping of the reactant ions with the methanol peak. Six different ketones dopants were tested, and 2-heptanone was selected as the optimal variant. Tenax-GR column was used for both HS and as a preseparation method of methanol and ethanol prior to IMS detection. The optimum sampling time of 15 min was achieved, a

The Impact of Hospital Accessibility on Interregional Patient Mobility in Italy.

Patient mobility represents a proxy measure to assess the quality and availability of hospital services, especially in decentralized health systems. Different studies have been focused on the interregional mobility in Italy to capture factors influencing this phenomenon. Among them, hospital capacity is generally captured through the number of beds per population. However, this indicator does not consider the distance to hospitals and the accessibility of extra-regional beds, in particular for patients living at the regional borders. The aim of this paper is to analyse the effect of extra-regi

The Johns Hopkins Activity and Mobility Promotion Program: A Framework to Increase Activity and Mobility Among Hospitalized Patients.

BACKGROUND: Greater mobility and activity among hospitalized patients has been linked to key outcomes, including decreased length of stay, increased odds of home discharge, and fewer hospital-acquired morbidities. Systematic approaches to increasing patient mobility and activity are needed to improve patient outcomes during and following hospitalization. PROBLEM: While studies have found the Johns Hopkins Activity and Mobility Promotion (JH-AMP) program improves patient mobility and associated outcomes, program details and implementation methods are not published. APPROACH: JH-AMP is a syste

Agile Walker.

The goal of the Agile Walker is to improve the outdoor mobility of healthy elderly people with some mobility limitations. It is a newly developed, all-terrain walker, equipped with an electric drive system and speed control that can assists elderly people to walk outdoors or to hike. The walker has a unique product design with an attractive look that will appeal to "active-agers" population. This paper describes product design requirements and the development process of the Agile Walker, its features and some preliminary testing results.
