To push or not to push? Affective influences on moral judgment depend on decision frame.

People's moods can influence moral judgment. Such influences may arise because moods affect moral emotion, or because moods affect moral thought. The present study provides evidence that, at least in the footbridge dilemma, moods affect moral thought. The results of two experiments are reported in which, after induction of positive, negative, or neutral moods and presentation of the footbridge scenario, participants were asked one of two differentially framed closing questions. In the active frame, participants were asked whether they would be active and push the man, making thoughts about pus

The trouble with morality: the effects of 12-step discourse on addicts' decision-making.

Since its development in the 1960s, researchers have extensively scrutinized methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) as a medical response to heroin addiction. Studies consistently find that MMT is more successful than other treatment models in the reduction of opiate/opioid misuse, the transmission of diseases like HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C, and criminal arrest and conviction rates. Nonetheless, a significant portion of active and former heroin addicts view MMT negatively and-perhaps as a result-MMT is vastly underused. This study examines the effects of 12-Step discourses on the opinions and tr

Microbes, mating, and morality: individual differences in three functional domains of disgust.

What is the function of disgust? Whereas traditional models have suggested that disgust serves to protect the self or neutralize reminders of our animal nature, an evolutionary perspective suggests that disgust functions to solve 3 qualitatively different adaptive problems related to pathogen avoidance, mate choice, and social interaction. The authors investigated this 3-domain model of disgust across 4 studies and examined how sensitivity to these functional domains relates to individual differences in other psychological constructs. Consistent with their predictions, factor analyses demonstr

Health insurance and ex ante moral hazard: evidence from Medicare.

Basic economic theory suggests that health insurance coverage may cause a reduction in prevention activities, but empirical studies have yet to provide much evidence to support this prediction. However, in other insurance contexts that involve adverse health events, evidence of ex ante moral hazard is more consistent. In this paper, we extend the analysis of the effect of health insurance on health behaviors by allowing for the possibility that health insurance has a direct (ex ante moral hazard) and indirect effect on health behaviors. The indirect effect works through changes in health promo

Unsentimental ethics: towards a content-specific account of the moral-conventional distinction.

In this paper, we offer an overview and a critique of the existing theories of the moral-conventional distinction, with emphasis on Nichols's [Nichols, S. (2002). Norms with feeling: Towards a psychological account of moral judgment. Cognition, 84, 221-236] neo-sentimentalist approach. After discussing some distinctive features of Nichols's (2002) thesis and situating it within the context of his predecessors' work [Blair, R. (1995). Contemplation of moral dilemmas eliminates sex differences on the Iowa gambling task.

Men outperform women on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT; A. Bechara, H. Damasio, D. Tranel, & A. R. Damasio, 1997). In this study, the authors show that sex differences are not due to differences in general emotional arousal or the abilities to calculate or reverse responses. Imaging studies have shown that, during the IGT, men increase activity in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) and lateral orbital PFC, whereas women increase activity in the left medial orbital PFC. Deliberation of personal moral (PM) dilemmas also increases activity in medial and lateral dorsal PFC, whereas delibe

On being poor and feeling poor: low socioeconomic status and the moral self.

Persons of low socioeconomic status generally experience worse health and shorter lives than their better off counterparts. They also suffer a greater incidence of adverse psychosocial characteristics, such as low self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-mastery and increased cynicism and hostility. These population data suggest another category of harm to persons: diminished moral agency. Chronic socioeconomic deprivation can create environments that undermine the development of self and capacities constitutive to moral agency--i.e., the capacity for self-determination and crafting a life of one'

Conjoined twins and Catholic moral analysis: extraordinary means and casuistical consistency.

eThis article draws upon the Roman Catholic distinction between "ordinary" and "extraordinary" means of medical treatment to analyze the case of "Jodie" and "Mary," the Maltese conjoined twins whose surgical separation was ordered by the English courts over the objection of their Roman Catholic parents and Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, the Roman Catholic Cardinal Archbishop of Westminister. It attempts to shed light on the use of that distinction by surrogate decision makers with respect to incompetent patients. In addition, it critically analyzes various components of the distinction by comparing t

HIV-testing of health care workers: unethical request or moral obligation?

Transmission of HIV from physician to patient is possible. Physicians should help the public understand the low level of this risk and put it in the perspective of other medical risks, while acknowledging public concern. Nevertheless, there is a clear need for national guidelines which give unambiguous, practicable guidance about HIV-testing of health care workers performing invasive procedures and consequences of positive results. It is an ethical obligation of us physicians to come forward with such distinct recommendations and clearly have identified "exposure-prone" procedures which might

Ethical and moral dilemmas in the treatment of an abusive parent--the occupational therapy perspective.

Treating patients who physically abuse their children creates in the therapist moral and ethical dilemmas which challenge his or her ability to maintain a professional conduct and attitude. In such cases the therapist usually finds himself or herself confronted with the following dilemmas: (a) treatment of a patient who experiences therapy as a no-choice situation; (b) treatment of a patient whose conduct is in conflict with the moral values of the therapist; (c) the obligation of the therapist to report the abusive acts to the authorities versus his or her duty to protect the patient's right

Moral and cognitive development of moderately retarded, mildly retarded, and nonretarded individuals.

The relationships of moral maturity, cognitive reasoning, MA, and CA were investigated with three IQ groups. The subjects were 20 moderately retarded, 20 mildly retarded, and 20 nonretarded individuals matched for MA. The findings indicated that moderately retarded individuals are at lower levels of cognitive reasoning and moral maturity than MA-matched mildly retarded and nonretarded individuals. The findings also indicated a stronger relationship between moral maturity and cognitive reasoning than between MA and moral maturity or MA and cognitive reasoning. The findings were discussed in ter

Moral dilemmas and conflicts concerning patients in a vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome: shared or non-shared decision making? A qualitative study of the professional perspective in two moral case deliberations.

BACKGROUND: Patients in a vegetative state/ unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS) pose ethical dilemmas to those involved. Many conflicts occur between professionals and families of these patients. In the Netherlands physicians are supposed to withdraw life sustaining treatment once recovery is not to be expected. Yet these patients have shown to survive sometimes for decades. The role of the families is thought to be important. The aim of this study was to make an inventory of the professional perspective on conflicts in long-term care of patients in VS/UWS. METHODS: A qualitative study

How peer behavior shapes academic misconduct: The roles of moral disengagement and shame.

Academic misconduct predisposition remains an important concern in higher education, and peer behavior perception has emerged as a relevant correlate of students' academic integrity-related tendencies. Drawing on social cognitive theory and Bandura's moral disengagement theory, this study examined how perceived peer misconduct is associated with students'self-reported predisposition toward academic misconduct through moral disengagement and shame. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of 418 undergraduate students from a comprehensive university in Shandong, China. Structural eq

The neural architecture of first-person moral choice: A demand-dependent working model.

First-person moral choice may require the coordination of norm-relevant, self-relevant, affective, and outcome-related information. This narrative review integrates neuroimaging and electrophysiological evidence into a network-informed temporal working model organized around integrative demand: the extent to which multiple, potentially competing constraints must be represented and coordinated. The model distinguishes four candidate functional contributions: salience-related orienting, posterior default-mode/medial-temporal self-relevant situation construction, executive-control/frontoparietal
