In preparation for a study on the effect of bed net use on malaria, this article describes febrile morbidity and malaria expenditures in a sub-Saharan area (Benin) of hyperendemic malaria. The 325 randomly selected households were visited weekly between April 1994 and March 1995 to determine febrile morbidity and household expenditures for prevention and treatment. INTRODUCTION: Obesity modifies vocal characteristics, causing abnormal fat deposition in the abdominal region and upper airways. For some authors the voice of the obese is not different from nonobese and the vocal symptoms are scarce; for others dysphonia in obese is reported by 70% of them and the voice becomes hoarse, breathy, and unstable.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the voice of patients with morbid obesity.
METHODS: Two groups were included: Obese (n-27), aged between 26 and 59 years, selected for bariatric surgery; Control (n-27), matched in age, with ideal weight for height.

Prevalence of skin and eye disorders in African onchocerciasis (river blindness) is well documented. However, less is known about their joint occurrence. Information on concurrence may improve our understanding of disease pathogenesis and is required to estimate the disease burden of onchocerciasis. We analysed data from 765 individuals from forest villages in the Kumba and Ngambe Health districts, Cameroon. These data were collected in 1998, as baseline data for the evaluation of the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control. Concurrence of symptoms was assessed using logistic regression.

Before the use of corticosteroids, the prognosis for polymyositis/dermatomyositis (PM/DM) was extremely poor. To date, although overall prognosis appears to be better, PM and DM are still considered to be associated with increased morbidity, primarily related to severe muscle weakness and visceral involvement. BACKGROUND: Our objective was to evaluate morbidity and mortality of thyroidectomy in substernal goiters and identify patients at risk for these events.
METHODS: The medical records of 127 patients with substernal goiters were retrospectively reviewed.
