Mapping real‑world motorcycle crash mechanisms to advanced rider assistance systems: a 29‑case analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Advanced rider assistance systems (ARAS) for motorcycles have shown promising performance in track-test controlled evaluations, yet little is known about how often these technologies correspond to the mechanisms observed in severe real‑world crashes. This study examines the extent to which contributing factors present in a set of 29 investigator‑documented motorcycle crashes (27 fatal) align with the operational design conditions of current production ARAS technologies. The goal was not to measure crash reduction or intervention effectiveness, but to identify where these systems cou

Factors influencing motorcycle crash risk and accident prediction ability: The role of hazard perception training in Thailand.

Road traffic crashes remain a critical public issue in Thailand, particularly among motorcycle riders. In-depth accident investigations have identified perceptual failure, specifically the lack of hazard perception skills, as a key contributing factor in motorcycle-related crashes. Despite various road safety measures, empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of hazard perception training for motorcyclists remains limited. This study aimed to examine the factors associated with motorcycle crash and near-miss involvement among riders in Thailand, evaluate the effectiveness of a newly deve

Riding with the flow: study on intrinsic motivation, dispositional flow, and sensation seeking among Italian motorcycle racers.

BACKGROUND: There is a limited body of research investigating psychological dimensions involved in motorcycle racing. Exploring intrinsic motivation becomes crucial since it is associated with high performance and sport persistence. Dispositional flow and sensation seeking, psychological traits involved in motorcycle practice, may exert a significant influence on intrinsic motivation. The current study aimed (1) to assess whether higher levels of intrinsic motivation characterize motorcycle racers participating in higher levels of competition, while no clear hypotheses were made for dispositio

Temporal Instability of Motorcycle Crash Fatalities on Local Roadways: A Random Parameters Approach with Heterogeneity in Means and Variances.

Motorcycle accidents can impede sustainable development due to the high fatality rate associated with motorcycle riders, particularly in developing countries. Although there has been extensive research conducted on motorcycle accidents on highways, there is a limited understanding of the factors contributing to accidents involving the most commonly used motorcycles on local roads. This study aimed to identify the root causes of fatal motorcycle accidents on local roads. The contributing factors consist of four groups: rider characteristics, maneuvers prior to the crash, temporal and environmen

Field testing the applicability of motorcycle autonomous emergency braking (MAEB) during pre-crash avoidance maneuver.

OBJECTIVE: Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) is a promising technology for crash avoidance or pre-crash impact speed reduction through the automatic application of braking force. Implementation of AEB technology on motorcycles (MAEB) is still problematic as its interaction with the rider may compromise the safety. In previous studies, MAEB interventions at low decelerations were shown to be easily manageable by common riders in straight line condition, but they were not previously tested in lateral maneuvers such as lane change and swerving, which are common in pre-crash situations. The objec

An application of the theory of planned behaviour to understand compliance with daytime running headlights law among motorcycle riders.

Fatal motorcycle crashes are a persistent problem in Southeast Asia. In many respects, road safety experts have acknowledged conspicuity issue as one of the main causes of such accidents. To mitigate this deficiency, daytime running headlights (DRHs) law has been documented among the widely exercised countermeasures. The present study aimed to explore socio-psychological factors shaping intentions towards use of DRHs among Malaysian motorcyclists, because compliance level with this rule has remained constant since 1996 (80%). For this purpose, a model was constructed through the Theory of Plan
