A retrospective analysis of the clinical course of disseminated fungal infections in 32 patients revealed 25 cases of candidiasis, 5 patients with aspergillosis, and 2 with mixed fungal infections. All patients had undergone cytostatic therapy for malignant hematological diseases as the predisposing risk factor for fungal infection. 30 patients had severe granulocytopenia (less than 500/cmm). In addition, 30 patients had received broad spectrum antibiotics and 16 had been treated with corticosteroids. 17 of 32 patients were treated systemically with antimycotic drugs for proven fungal infectio

The histopathologic pattern of secondary mycoses in 61 immunocompromised patients is presented. The underlying diseases were: neoplasms, organ transplants, AIDS and a variety of other debilitating diseases. Three patients with AIDS had a double fungal infection. Candida spp. accounted for the majority of deep-seated mycoses, with 27 cases (44.2%); disseminated candidiasis was responsible of 18.5% of these patients death. Aspergillosis was seen in 23 subjects (37.7%), 18 of them (78.2%) died for systemic infection. These patients were severely debilitated by disease and/or iatrogenic procedures…

Itraconazole was administered orally to two patients with sporotrichosis, 10 patients with paracoccidioidomycosis, three with mycetomas (due to Madurella grisea, Streptomyces madurae, and Pseudochaetosphaeronema larense, respectively), nine with chromomycosis due to Cladosporium carrionii, five with chromomycosis due to Fonsecaea pedrosoi and five with leishmaniasis (including one with the nodular disseminated form). The clinical and laboratory tests showed excellent tolerance to the drug with a total absence of adverse reactions. Satisfactory results were achieved against paracoccidioidomycos

Oral ketoconazole was given to 50 patients, 36 with superficial and 14 with deep-seated mycoses. Satisfactory results were obtained in dermatophytoses, pityriasis versicolor, and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis. Paracoccidioidomycosis also responded well to ketoconazole therapy. The authors' experience in patients with histoplasmosis and aspergillosis does not make it possible to express a firm view on the efficacy of the drug. Ketoconazole is not the recommended drug for treatment of sporotrichosis.

Smears were taken from the anterior and posterior vaginal fornices of 232 women who attended prenatal consultations at Würzburg University Gynecological Clinic. The cultures were compared using Sabouraud's Glucose Agar (S.G.A.) and two commercially available rapid testing media--Nickerson Medium (N.M.) and Microstix Candida (M.C.T.) for saccharomycetes. The presence of saccharomycetes was demonstrated by means of S.G.A. in 23% (52) of the women and with N.M. in 10% (23). If only N.M. had been used, colonization by saccharomycetes would have been overlooked in 32 cases. With regard to the relia
