Designing a contact lens with atropine base using a microemulsion technique.

PURPOSE: Myopia or near-sightedness is a global vision problem. Atropine eye drops and myopia-controlling contact lenses can help to slow down its progression, but neither is sufficient alone. The present research work was conducted to design a contact lens embedded with an atropine base within a microemulsion system. The goal was to improve the stability of atropine base and facilitate its release from the lens, preventing the rapid clearance observed with atropine eye drops. METHODS: Two microemulsions, one with a pH of 7.4 and the other with a pH of 6.5, were developed using the surfactant

Absorption and attachment of atropine to etafilcon A contact lenses.

PURPOSE: Myopia (short-sightedness) is a growing vision problem worldwide. Currently atropine eye drops are used to control the progression of myopia but these suffer from potential lack of bioavailability and low ocular residence time. Commercially available myopia control contact lenses are also used to limit myopia progression, but neither atropine nor contact lenses individually completely stop progression. Development of myopia control contact lenses which could deliver therapeutic doses of atropine is thus desirable and may provide increased efficacy. This study was designed to explore t

Side effects of topical atropine 0.05% compared to 0.01% for myopia control in German school children: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Based on findings of the Asian low-concentration atropine for myopia progression study, a concentration of 0.05% has been proposed as a good compromise between safety and efficacy for myopia control. However, no data on side effects have been published so far in Caucasian children receiving this dose. METHODS: Prior to commencement of bilateral atropine treatment with 0.05% atropine, 19 myopic children aged 5 to 15 years were treated in only one eye at bedtime leaving the other eye as a control. Pupil size, accommodation amplitude and near visual acuity were measured at 10:00 a.m. th

A Review of Current Concepts of the Etiology and Treatment of Myopia.

Myopia occurs in more than 50% of the population in many industrialized countries and is expected to increase; complications associated with axial elongation from myopia are the sixth leading cause of blindness. Thus, understanding its etiology, epidemiology, and the results of various treatment regiments may modify current care and result in a reduction in morbidity from progressive myopia. This rapid increase cannot be explained by genetics alone. Current animal and human research demonstrates that myopia development is a result of the interplay between genetic and the environmental factors.

A comparison of cycloplegic autorefraction and retinoscopy in Indian children.

BACKGROUND: Correction of significant refractive errors in childhood helps in preventing amblyopia and strabismus. India has a huge demand for eye-care services related to uncorrected refractive errors with limited manpower resources. This can be overcome by autorefractors, which are free of operator bias, do not need skilled eye-care professionals and can be operated with ease. Hence, the purpose of this study, the first in the Indian population, was to determine the accuracy of autorefraction compared to traditional retinoscopy under cycloplegia. METHOD: A cross-sectional study of all child
