Adenocarcinomas of appendix: a rare tumor. Two case reports.

Primary Adenocarcinomas of the appendix are rare tumor. Most commonly diagnosis was made after surgical pocedure of appendicectomy for suspect acute appendicitis and the pathology report confirms appendiceal neoplasm. Laboratory exams and imaging show low sensibility and specificity for preoperative diagnosis. We report two cases of primary mucinous adenocarcinoma in caucasian men misdiagnosed as having acute appendicitis. Appendicectomy was done and excised appendix was sent for histopathological examination. Mucinous Adenocarcinoma of the appendix was confirmed after histopathological examin

New advances in pancreatic imaging.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review serves to highlight new technology and novel applications of existing techniques and their role in the management of pancreatic diseases, including acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and pancreatic cystic neoplasms. RECENT FINDINGS: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound has shown promise in evaluating the severity of acute pancreatitis, staging pancreatic cancer, and predicting malignancy in cystic neoplasms. Optical coherence tomography within the pancreatic duct appears to be able to differentiate malignant and normal pancreatic ducts. Spectroscopy may

Predicting textbook outcome after pancreaticoduodenectomy for invasive intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm: An international validation cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Textbook outcome, a composite measure of optimal recovery, remains poorly defined for invasive intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm after pancreaticoduodenectomy. This study aimed to develop and validate the first nomogram predicting textbook outcome in this distinct cohort, addressing gaps in tailored prognostic tools for patients meeting contemporary surgical criteria on the basis of high-risk features. METHODS: Using multicenter data from 327 US patients (training cohort) and 152 Chinese patients (external test cohort), we evaluated 43 preoperative and intraoperative variabl

[Rare differential diagnosis on suspected liver tumor].

This case report describes a 77-year old woman with a leiomyosarcoma of subhepatic inferior caval vein. The presented symptom was unspecific abdominal pain. Ultrasound and CT suggested a primary liver tumor. MRI revealed retroperitoneal location of the neoplasm. The tumor was resected completely and ICV was replaced by a PTF-graft. Vascular leiomyosarcoma is a rare tumor entity, which often is diagnosed in advanced stage. Depending on location it can be mistaken for neoplasms of other organs.

Survival Following Neoplastic Disease in Individuals With Neurofibromatosis 1-A National Danish Population-Based Cohort Study.

Population-based evidence on cancer survival in individuals with neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) remains limited. We compared survival following a first neoplasm in individuals with NF1 to that of the general Danish population and stratified on age, sex, and potential survival-related factors, including cancer stage and comorbidity. Using the Danish Cancer Registry, we identified 428 individuals with NF1 and 392,885 without NF1, all diagnosed with a first neoplasm (1977-2022). We estimated survival using Kaplan-Meier methods, assessed neoplastic and nonneoplastic mortality, and evaluated prior inpat

Transrectal ultrasound of rectal tumors.

Since preoperative staging of rectal tumors is important in planning treatment, we evaluated transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) staging of rectal neoplasms. In 35 consecutive rectal tumors, we compared TRUS staging results with final pathologic staging. TRUS predicted the degree of tumor invasion in 19 of 24 patients (79%) and the presence or absence of lymph node metastasis in 11 of 15 patients (73%). TRUS overestimated the degree of tumor invasion in four patients (17%) and underestimated invasion in one patient (4%). The depth of tumor invasion was correctly predicted in all 14 tumors located wi

The biologic spectrum of thymic epithelial neoplasms: current status and future prospects.

Thymoma is the most common anterior mediastinal tumor in adults and is frequently associated with autoimmune disorders such as myasthenia gravis. Thymomas are a diverse group of epithelial neoplasms with a behavioral spectrum that spans the complete clinical gamut from entirely benign to highly aggressive, lethal thymic carcinomas. The biologic behavior seems to depend primarily on the clinical stage at presentation and histologic subtype. This article discusses thymic organogenesis, Masaoka staging, WHO histologic classification of thymoma and thymic carcinoma, and selected molecular characte

Involvement of the urogenital tract in patients with five or more separate malignant neoplasms. Case and review.

Occurrence of metachronous primary malignant neoplasms (PMN) in five or more different organs and tissue of the same patient is a very rare event. The present paper reports on a female patient who experienced Hodgkin's disease of nodular sclerotic type (stage IV), carcinoma of the cervix uteri (stage I), adenocarcinoma of the rectum (Dukes A), and a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the stomach (pT1) before she demonstrated multicentric transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis and ureter (pT3b G2-3) and of the bladder (pTa G2). Renal epithelial hyperplastic and neoplastic proliferation in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

The early v late occurrence of tubular epithelial hyperplasia and the frequency and malignant potential of renal neoplasms in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) are controversial. The kidneys from 87 patients with documented or presumed ADPKD, removed at autopsy (n = 49) or prior to transplantation (n = 38), were thoroughly sectioned and examined. Hyperplastic polyps were found in 90.8% of the patients, even in the absence of renal insufficiency or marked renal enlargement. However, their number was significantly higher in the patients with advanced stages of the disease, and

Musculoskeletal disorders: improving diagnostic accuracy with MRI.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is gaining wider acceptance for the diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders in the elderly, including internal joint derangements, neoplasms, and osteonecrosis. For internal derangement of large joints such as the knee, MRI is a noninvasive alternative to arthrography and offers excellent visualization. It plays an important role in the diagnosis and staging of primary and secondary neoplasms, including both osseous and soft tissue sarcomas. MRI is also indicated for diagnosing osteonecrosis that cannot be detected using other imaging modalities.

Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms: Diagnosis and Management.

OBJECTIVE: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) are a rare and heterogeneous disease for which clinical management is challenging. We aim to review the literature regarding modalities of treatment to guide the management of AMNs. METHODS AND REVIEW CRITERIA: We conducted a PubMed search in February 2016 for English-language publications, using the terms "appendiceal," "appendix," "carcinoma," "cancer," "mucinous," "treatment," "genes," "target," "genomic," and terms listed in the articles' subheadings. Metastatic Primary Intratesticular Rhabdomyosarcoma in an Adolescent with Rapid Early Response to VAC Chemotherapy: A Case Report and Literature Review of 99 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Primary intratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma (PTRMS) is an exceptionally rare malignancy and may be clinically indistinguishable from more common scrotal conditions or germ cell tumors prior to orchiectomy. Evidence to guide management is limited, and treatment is typically extrapolated from pediatric and adolescent/young adult rhabdomyosarcoma protocols. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old male presented with progressive, painless enlargement of the right testis. Cross-sectional imaging demonstrated a large intratesticular mass with extensive retroperitoneal and pelvic lymphadenopathy c

Immune dysregulation in thymoma: a potential mechanistic link to secondary lung cancer-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Thymoma is a rare mediastinal neoplasm derived from thymic epithelial cells and is frequently associated with paraneoplastic autoimmune syndromes. Beyond these classical manifestations, thymomas can induce chronic systemic inflammation through impaired central tolerance, cytokine release, and immune dysregulation. This inflammatory microenvironment has been increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to secondary malignancies, although reports remain scarce. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a 71-year-old male with a significant smoking history who was diagnosed with non-small ce

Prostate cancer in patients from rural and suburban areas--PSA value, Gleason score and presence of metastases in bone scan.

INTRODUCTION: Prostate cancer is the second most common neoplasm among men both worldwide and in Poland. In prostate cancer, bone metastasis is related to a poorer prognosis. A diagnosis of metastatic bone disease is important in prostate cancer patients prior to therapy. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) serum value is used both as a screening tool and for staging of prostate cancer. AIM: To evaluate whether there is a link between symptoms presented by patients, pain in particular, and the presence, number and location of bone metastases as assessed by bone scan scintigraphy in concordance wi

Detection and semiquantitative analysis of human herpesvirus 8 DNA in specimens from patients with Kaposi's sarcoma.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is the most common neoplasm in patients with AIDS. Epidemiologic evidence and the recent identification of herpesvirus-like DNA sequences in patients with KS have suggested a role for viral agents in the etiopathogenesis of this disease. It is unclear if these sequences are present in all types of KS and if the copy number of these sequences has a correlation with disease severity (staging). In order to clarify these issues, we retrospectively analyzed, by PCR and Southern blotting, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens from 12 patients previously diagnosed w

Survival of patients with chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms and new primary cancers: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms are at increased risk of new solid or haematological cancers, but how prognosis is affected in patients with preceding myeloproliferative neoplasms is unclear. METHODS: We used data from population-based medical databases in Denmark from 1980 to 2011 to compare survival between cancer patients with and without a preceding diagnosis of myeloproliferative neoplasm, matched for age, sex, year of diagnosis, and type of cancer. We assessed outcomes by cancer stage and comorbidities. FINDINGS: Data were available for 1246 patients with

Current updates and future directions in diagnosis and management of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms are a heterogenous group of rare neoplasms that are increasingly being discovered, often incidentally, throughout the gastrointestinal tract with varying degrees of activity and malignant potential. Confusing nomenclature has added to the complexity of managing these lesions. The term carcinoid tumor and embryonic classification have been replaced with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm, which includes gastrointestinal neuroendocrine and pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms. A comprehensive multidisciplinary approach is important for c

Sarcomatoid Carcinoma of the Penis: An Uncommon Penile Neoplasm.

Sarcomatoid squamous cell carcinomas are extremely rare, high grade, aggressive variant of penile cancers. Sarcomatoid carcinoma are biphasic neoplasms with a combination of both sarcomatoid components and carcinomatous elements. These neoplasms are very rare in the urogenital system. We report a 53-year-old male presented with an ulcerated lesion on the glans penis. The rarity of this case reiterates the importance of thorough morphological and histological examination along with immunohistochemistry in diagnosing, staging, treatment and follow up of patients.
