Uncommon presentation of pigmented paraungual basal cell carcinoma on the first toe treated with total excision.

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are the most common types of skin neoplasm. The finger, toe, and nail unit are uncommon and rare locations of BCC. Only a few patients with foot BCC have been reported, and ungual BCC is even less frequent. We present a patient with a BCC on the left first toe. Clinically, it appeared as a brown-colored plaque with an irregular border on the nail fold and dorsum of the left thumb. Histopathological findings were consistent with the pigmented type of BCC. Surgical approach with subsequent full thickness mesh graft led to a complete remission. Follow-up at 10 months

Giant basal cell carcinoma.

A 72-year-old white man presented with a large cutaneous tumor on his back. The patient said the lesion, mostly asymptomatic, had increased in size for about 7 years. Physical examination revealed a vegetating mass (Figure 1), partially ulcerated, measuring 30 x 20 cm, which easily dripped serum and blood, with small necrotic areas and a sclerotic border. Perilesional skin appeared edematous, probably owing to inflammation and impaired lymphatic flow. Clinically, there was no evidence of lymph node involvement. His family history was noncontributory. Hematologic examination revealed hypochromi

Basal cell epithelioma of the penis: a case report.

A 65-year-old man had a tumor with a small ulcer on the foreskin of his penis. A local excision was performed. Histological examination of the specimen revealed superficial basal cell epithelioma. Basal cell epithelioma is a common tumor of the skin, but is rarely found on the penis. Only 11 cases have been reported in the European and American literature. Basal cell epitheliomas were formerly called basal cell carcinomas and were treated as true carcinomas. However, recently they have been treated as benign tumors because of their good prognosis and rare metastasis.

Basal cell carcinoma associated with non-neoplastic cutaneous conditions: a comprehensive review.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) can be a component of a collision tumor in which the skin cancer is present at the same cutaneous site as either a benign tumor or a malignant neoplasm. However, BCC can also concurrently occur at the same skin location as a non-neoplastic cutaneous condition. These include autoimmune diseases (vitiligo), cutaneous disorders (Darier disease), dermal conditions (granuloma faciale), dermal depositions (amyloid, calcinosis cutis, cutaneous focal mucinosis, osteoma cutis, and tattoo), dermatitis, miscellaneous conditions (rhinophyma, sarcoidal reaction, and varicose vein

Molecular basis of basal cell carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common cancer, presenting low mortality but high morbidity, and it has as risk factor exposure to sunlight, especially UVB spectrum. The most important constitutional risk factors for basal cell carcinoma development are clear phototypes (I and II, Fitzpatrick classification), family history of basal cell carcinoma (30-60%), freckles in childhood, eyes and light hair. The environmental risk factor better established is exposure to ultraviolet radiation. However, different solar exposure scenarios probably are independent risk factors for certain clinical and hi

Management of Mucosal Basal Cell Carcinoma of the Lip: An Update and Comprehensive Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy in the United States. Most BCCs occur on cutaneous surfaces, but rare cases on the mucosal lip have also been documented. Because only a small number of mucosal BCC (mBCC) cases have been reported, data on their clinical characteristics and management are limited. OBJECTIVE: To perform an updated literature review of the management of mBCCs on the lip. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted through a search of the PubMed database with the key phrases "mucosal basal cell carcinoma," "basal cell carcinoma mu

[Trichilemmal carcinoma in a patient with squamous cell skin cancer].

Trichilemmal carcinoma is a rare skin tumor that mainly occurs in the elderly (mean age, 71 years) and is localized in the repeatedly sun-exposed areas, most commonly on the face, scalp, neck, and dorsa of the hands. Its differential diagnosis is made with squamous cell skin cancer, clear-cell porocarcinoma, hidradenocarcinoma, and melanoma. The prognosis of trichilemmal carcinoma is most favorable than that of other skin tumors during radical removal. The paper describes a case of an 80-year-old man with long-standing trichilemmal carcinoma of the skin in the area of the shoulder joint, which

Detection of C-KIT (CD117) molecule in benign and malignant salivary gland tumours.

C-KIT (CD117), a tyrosine kinase receptor, is involved in the growth and development of normal tissues and some types of neoplasms. In the present study we analysed the expression of this molecule in salivary gland tumours. Archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of 40 benign and 57 malignant salivary gland tumours were retrieved and retrospectively studied immunohistochemically using a polyclonal C-KIT antibody in an Envision/HRP technique. In addition five samples of chronic submandibular sialadenitis, five normal minor salivary glands and parotid or submandibular gland tissue ad

Efficacy and safety of cold forceps biopsy for diminutive pharyngeal neoplasms: Single-center, prospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Management of diminutive pharyngeal neoplasms is controversial. Thus, we conducted a single-center, prospective pilot study to investigate the efficacy and safety of endoscopic excision with cold forceps biopsy (CFB) of these lesions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine lesions endoscopically diagnosed with narrow-band imaging as pharyngeal neoplasms of 3 mm or smaller were excised with CFB using jumbo biopsy forceps (cap diameter 2.8 mm, jaw volume 12.4 mm3 ). The primary outcome was endoscopically determined local remnant/recurrence rate 3 months after CFB. The secondary outcomes

Papillary renal neoplasm with reversed polarity: A case report of a rare renal tumor.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Papillary Renal Neoplasm with Reversed Polarity (PRNRP) is a rare renal tumor first described in 2019. It is characterized by low-grade nuclei, eosinophilic cytoplasm, and an inverted nuclear arrangement. Unlike papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC), PRNRP frequently harbors KRAS mutations and lacks the typical trisomies of chromosomes 7 and 17. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry remain the gold standard for diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old woman with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease presented with worsening renal

Clinical implications of hedgehog signaling pathway inhibitors.

Hedgehog was first described in Drosophila melanogaster by the Nobel laureates Eric Wieschaus and Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard. The hedgehog (Hh) pathway is a major regulator of cell differentiation, proliferation, tissue polarity, stem cell maintenance, and carcinogenesis. The first link of Hh signaling to cancer was established through studies of a rare familial disease, Gorlin syndrome, in 1996. Follow-up studies revealed activation of this pathway in basal cell carcinoma, medulloblastoma and, leukemia as well as in gastrointestinal, lung, ovarian, breast, and prostate cancer. Targeted inhib
