Lytic bone lesion as the first manifestation of late recurrence of gastric cancer.

The incidence of gastric cancer has declined worldwide, it is the second most common cancer worldwide and two thirds of these occurs in developing countries. In Peru, this neoplasm, has one of the highest incidence and mortality rates. The main sites of gastric adenocarcinoma metastasis are the liver and lung; In contrast, bone metastasis are an uncommon finding up to 0.9 to 2% of patients and is associated with an ominous prognosis. We present the case of a 48-year-old female patient diagnosed with gastric cancer treated surgically and with regular controls. 5 years later, she was admitted du

Extramedullary Plasmacytoma of the Maxilla Simulating a Maxillary Radicular Cyst: Quick Diagnosis and Management.

Plasma cell tumors are lymphoid neoplastic proliferations of B cells. Multiple myeloma is the disseminated type of this disorder, while localized forms of plasma cell neoplasms are solitary plasmacytoma of bone that is observed as centrally localized in bones, and extramedullar plasmacytoma (EMP) that develops in soft tissues. EMP of the head and neck region is a rare malignant tumor comprising approximately 3% of all plasma cell tumors, and approximately 0.4% of all head and neck malignancies; among them, plasmacytoma of the maxilla is extremely rare. The authors present a case of a patient a

Osteoma in medial pterygoid muscle: an unusual case.

Soft tissues osteoma is an execeedingly rare tumour. It is a benign often asymptomatic neoplasm. The exact etiology and pathogenesis of osteomas are unclear. This paper report a case of peripheral osteoma located in the middle part of the medial pterygoid muscle of the right infratemporal region in a 60-year-old woman. Clinical examination did not reveal any extraoral swelling, facial asymmetry or difficulty in mouth opening, and the regional lymph nodes were non-palpable. Panoramic radiograph show a round well-circumscribed free/independent radiopaque mass located in the middle part of the ri

Diplopia as the first symptom of an aggressive metastatic rectal stromal tumor.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms, and metastatic disease is present at diagnosis in about 50%. Most common metastatic sites are the liver, the lungs, and the peritoneum. Bony metastases are uncommon and of unknown prognosis. CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old man presented with diplopia due to a clival metastastic lesion from an asymptomatic rectal stromal tumor. This patient also had liver and vertebral metastases. Treatment with imatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, led to a partial response of the primary tumor and hepatic metastasis, but the pati

Update on new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for sarcomas.

Sarcomas represent a family of uncommon malignancies related by histopathology and developmental biology. Sarcomas arise from any of the mesodermal tissues anywhere in the body (muscles, tendons, adipose tissue, blood vessels, and joints) from cells of mesenchymal origin or in the peripheral nervous system, derived from the ectoderm. Mainly diagnosed in the extremities, sarcomas can be present also in soft tissues of the trunk, abdomen, and retroperitoneum, as well as the head and neck. During the last decade, improvements in diagnostic techniques have made it possible to identify and characte

Primary solitary fibrous tumor of the thyroid gland: A review starting from a case report.

Primary solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the thyroid gland is a rare mesenchymal tumor with fibroblastic differentiation, ramified, thin-walled, enlarged (staghorn) vessels and specific NAB2-STAT6 gene fusion, which is more commonly found in pleura and peritoneum. This neoplasm can be located in a variety of anatomical sites outside pleura and peritoneum including bone, visceral organs and soft tissues, head and neck examples representing only 10-15% of the extra-pleural and extra-peritoneal tumors. Diagnosing this entity can be difficult, especially in thyroid gland, mainly because of the rari

PET/CT and MRI of intra-osseous haemangioma of the tibia.

Intra-osseous haemangioma is a rare, benign neoplasm that usually involves the vertebrae and craniofacial bones. Furthermore, its occurrence in the long bones is extremely rare. We report the findings of fluorine-18-fludeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/CT and MRI in a patient with intra-osseous haemangioma in the proximal tibia, who was initially misdiagnosed as having a malignancy based on (18)F-FDG PET/CT. (18)F-FDG PET/CT showed a well-marginated osteolytic lesion with abnormal FDG uptake. The mass demonstrated low signal intensity on T(1) weighted MRI. On T(2) wei

Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma of the diaphragm presenting with hemothorax.

Ewing sarcoma is a relatively uncommon malignant bone neoplasm that usually occurs in children and young adults and involves the major long bones, pelvis, and ribs. Primary diaphragmatic Ewing sarcoma is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, only three cases of primary Ewing sarcoma of the diaphragm have been reported. A 12-year-old girl presented spontaneous occurrences of the right hemothorax. After drainage, a roentgenogram film, computed tomography, ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance image showed a giant mass on the right diaphragm. Primary diaphragmatic tumor was resected tot

Bone Marrow Immunohistochemistry and Flow Cytometry in the Diagnosis of Malignant Hematologic Diseases With Emphasis on Lymphomas: A Comparative Retrospective Study.

We aim to evaluate the degree of agreement between immunohistochemistry (IHC) and flow cytometry (FC) in the diagnosis of malignant hematologic diseases, mainly lymphomas. A total of 260 bone marrow biopsies, 255 bone marrow aspirates, and 5 other suspensions of 260 patients used for diagnosis of a hematologic malignancy between 2009 and 2012 with both, IHC and FC, were retrospectively analyzed. Overall there is a substantial degree of agreement (κ=0.69) between IHC and FC. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma, mature T-cell neoplasms, acute leukemias, and myelodysplastic sy

Extracranial expansion of a feline meningioma.

Meningioma is the most frequently observed primary brain tumour in cats. Usually, it is associated with an intracranial expansion with consequent brain compression, oedema and brain herniation. Typical features of feline intracranial meningiomas are hyperostosis of the adjacent bone and intratumoral mineralisation. We describe a 13-year-old male neutered cat with a 1-year history of behavioural change. At clinical and neurological examination the cat showed signs consistent with right-sided forebrain lesion. Magnetic resonance images showed a right-sided extra-axial contrast enhancing mass in

A Case of Thymic Carcinoma with Bone and Cerebral Metastases Treated with Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND Thymic carcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm. High-grade thymic carcinoma has a high recurrence rate following surgery, and a low 5-year survival rate. Approximately 30% of patients with thymic carcinoma will be asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis. Extrathoracic metastasis on presentation is uncommon. Treatment of the primary tumor includes surgery, chemotherapy, and fractionated radiation. A rare case of thymic carcinoma that presented with bone and cerebral metastases is reported in a patient who responded well to stereotactic radiosurgery and chemotherapy. CASE REPORT A 63-yea

A Rare and Unusual Case of Burkitt's Lymphoma Presenting with a Prostate Mass in a 12-Year-Old Boy.

Burkitt's lymphoma is the most frequent subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in childhood. Radiographic findings are protean and can often overlap with other neoplastic and nonneoplastic processes. We present an unusual case of Burkitt's lymphoma in a 12-year-old boy presenting with a one-week history of urinary retention, dysuria, and "tailbone pain," as well as a 4-week history of jaw pain, initially treated as a dental abscess. On dental radiography, the patient was found to have resorption of alveolar bone adjacent to the lower first molars bilaterally, in keeping with "floating teeth," class

Extensive Bone Marrow Involvement by BRAF V660E-Mutated Bi-Phenotypic Erdheim-Chester Neoplasm/Rosai-Dorfman Disease (Mixed Histiocytic Neoplasm) with Atypical Histological Features and Fulminant Hemophagocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a recently recognized clonal hematopoietic neoplasm characterized by activating alterations in the MAPK pathway. It involves multi-organ accumulation of abnormal histiocytes, leading to nonspecific clinical manifestations due to inflammation and fibrosis caused by histiocytic infiltration. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 45-year-old male with nonspecific clinical symptoms and progressive skin and abdominal lesions. Multiple tissue biopsies revealed fibrohistiocytic infiltration but provided an inconclusive diagnosis. Imaging studies showed extensiv

Causal association between inflammatory markers and malignant neoplasms of bone and articular cartilage using Mendelian randomization.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of malignant neoplasms of bone and articular cartilage is not fully understood, as the inflammatory immune microenvironment may play a crucial role in tumor development and progression. This study aimed to investigate the causal associations between specific inflammatory immune markers and the risk of bone and articular cartilage malignancies. METHODS: On the basis of genome-wide association study (GWAS) data from inflammatory factors and blood metabolites, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with F statistics greater than 10 were selected as valid instrumental

Impaired redox adaptation through SLC38A5-dependent glutamine metabolism contributes to melatonin-mediated anoikis sensitivity and metastasis suppression in bone cancer.

Malignant bone cancer, primarily osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma, are highly aggressive neoplasms originating from bone tissue and characterized by a strong propensity for lung metastasis. Tumor cells evade anoikis through reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated redox homeostasis, which modulates signaling cascades that promote proliferation, survival, and metastatic invasion into distant sites. Melatonin, synthesized primarily by the pineal gland, has been implicated in cancer prevention and therapy due to its inhibitory effects on bone cancer growth and progression. Little is known about the

Surgical Treatment of Radiation-Induced Late-Onset Scalp Wound in Patients Who Underwent Brain Tumor Surgery: Lessons from a Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: The management of late-onset scalp wounds following irradiation is troublesome, especially in patients with a surgical history of intracranial neoplasms. It, insidiously, starts with wound dehiscence or discharge and never heals spontaneously without appropriate surgical treatment. Nevertheless, definite treatment guidelines have not yet been established. Here, we present our clinical experience with radiation-induced scalp wounds and suggest a surgical principle for their treatment. Patients and Methods. The medical records of 13 patients with brain tumors, who were treated for int

Sinonasalteratocarcinosarcoma: a report of two cases and clinicopathological analysis.

Sinonasalteratocarcinosarcoma (SNTCS) is a highly malignant and aggressive neoplasm which can quickly damage the local soft tissue, bone tissue, and invade orbital and intracranial tissues. It also can result in local lymph node and distant organ metastasis. The data from 2 cases of SNTCS from the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College (China), treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy followed by cranio-facial resection, were analyzed since 2016. The main symptoms of the two patients were of the nasal cavity with nasal congestion and runny nose. There was no recurrence after sur

Head and neck manifestations of extramedullary plasmacytomas and their differential diagnoses: a pictorial review.

Solitary plasmacytoma and multiple myeloma are plasma cell dyscrasias that typically present as bone tumour(s) due to abnormal and unregulated proliferation of plasma cells in the skeletal marrow. Both can manifest as soft tissue lesions within the head and neck region, and they may pose a diagnostic challenge given their relative rarity. This review aims to highlight the key multimodality imaging features of plasma cell neoplasms with an emphasis on extraosseous/extramedullary presentations in the anatomically complex head and neck region, as well as the relevant anatomy of various head and n

Mouse model recapitulates the phenotypic heterogeneity of human adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma in bone.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma has a unique relationship to bone including latency in the marrow, and development of bone invasion, osteolytic tumors and humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy. To study these conditions, we established and characterized a novel mouse model of ATL bone metastasis. Patient-derived ATL cell lines including three that do not express HTLV-1 oncoprotein Tax (ATL-ED, RV-ATL, TL-Om1), an in vitro transformed human T-cell line with high Tax expression (HT-1RV), and an HTLV-1 negative T-cell lymphoma (Jurkat) were injected intratibially into NSG mice, and were capable of p
