Impulsivity and neuroticism share distinct functional connectivity signatures with alcohol-use risk in youth.

Increases in impulsivity and negative affect (e.g., neuroticism) are common during adolescence and are both associated with risk for alcohol-use initiation and other risk behaviors. Whole-brain functional connectivity approaches-when coupled with appropriate cross-validation-enable identification of complex neural networks subserving individual differences in dimensional traits (hereafter referred to as 'neural signatures'). Here, we analyzed functional connectivity data acquired at age 19 from individuals enrolled in a multisite European study of adolescent development (N ~ 1100) using connec

Chronic Inhibition of FAAH Reduces Depressive-Like Behavior and Improves Dentate Gyrus Proliferation after Chronic Unpredictable Stress Exposure.

Symptoms of depressive disorders such as anhedonia and despair can be a product of an aberrant adaptation to stress conditions. Chronic unpredictable stress model (CUS) can generate an increase in the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) and induce a reduction of neurotrophin signaling and the proliferation of neural progenitors in the adult dentate gyrus, together with increased oxidative stress. Levels of the endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA) seem to affect these depression-by-stress-related features and could be modulated by fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). We aimed to

Metabolic Activity in Central Neural Structures of Patients With Myocardial Injury.

Background Increasing evidence suggests a psychosomatic link between neural systems and the heart. In light of the growing burden of ischemic cardiovascular disease across the globe, a better understanding of heart-brain interactions and their implications for cardiovascular treatment strategies is needed. Thus, we sought to investigate the interaction between myocardial injury and metabolic alterations in central neural areas in patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease. Methods and Results The association between resting metabolic activity in distinct neural structures and car

A transgenic neuroanatomical marker identifies cranial neural crest deficiencies associated with the Pax3 mutant Splotch.

The murine Pax3 gene encodes a transcription factor containing a paired domain as well as a paired-type homeodomain. Its expression during embryonic development is temporally and spatially restricted, including mainly the dorsal part of the neural tube, the mesencephalon, the neural crest derivatives, and the dermomyotome. Development in the absence of Pax3 can be studied in Splotch mutant mice, which bear mutations within the Pax3 gene. Various alleles have been phenotypically and molecularly characterized. Abnormalities have been observed in the brain, the neural tube, the trunk neural crest

Topography of short portal vessels in the rat pituitary gland: a scanning electron-microscopic and morphometric study of corrosion cast replicas.

We applied scanning electron microscopy combined with imaging and morphometric techniques to analyze the dorsal topography and morphology of short portal vessels linking the capillary beds of the pituitary neural and anterior lobes in adult male albino rats. The pituitary microvasculature was replicated by intracarotid injection of Batson's No. 17 compound producing plastic casts that were advantageous for comprehensive morphometric analyses using an imaging device. The analysis revealed the existence of two types of portal vessels having quantitatively different morphological properties. The

Neural synchrony and cognitive map formulation in collaborative navigation: leader-follower couplings revealed by EEG hyperscanning.

UNLABELLED: This study aims to address a theoretical gap in how people formulate cognitive maps in a social context. The concept of a cognitive map, a mental representation of spatial relations, has been widely used to explain individual navigation. When navigating with others, the exchange of spatial knowledge and the formation of cognitive maps in leaders and followers are natural and ubiquitous, yet their neural underpinnings remain insufficiently understood. We investigated these mechanisms by recording hyperscanning electroencephalography (EEG) from 70 participants engaged in dyadic route

Shaping Slow Manifolds in Equivariant Recurrent Neural Networks.

Recordings of increasingly large neural populations have revealed that the firing of individual neurons is highly coordinated. When viewed in the space of all possible patterns, the collective activity forms nonlinear structures called neural manifolds. Because such structures are observed even at rest or during sleep, an important hypothesis is that activity manifolds may correspond to continuous attractors shaped by recurrent connectivity between neurons. Classical models of recurrent networks have shown that continuous attractors can be generated by specific symmetries in the connectivity.

Abnormal Association Between Neural Activity and Genetic Expressions of Impulsivity in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: An Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity in highly heritable attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been studied using neural activity via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or genetic data, but rarely with multivariate methods that link both. We investigated coupled neural activity and gene expression signatures, using parallel independent component analysis (pICA) and ABCD (Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development) Study data. METHODS: Children with ADHD (n = 394; 63% male) and healthy control children (n = 1000; 47% male) of European ancestry were included. The participants were random

Gray-matter relationships to diagnostic and transdiagnostic features of drug and behavioral addictions.

Alterations in neural structure have been reported in both cocaine-use disorder and gambling disorder, separately, suggesting similarities across addiction diagnoses. Individual variation in neural structure has also been associated with impulsivity, a dimensional construct implicated in addictions. This study combines categorical (diagnosis-based) and dimensional (transdiagnostic) approaches to identify neural structural alterations linked to addiction subtypes and trait impulsivity, respectively, across individuals with gambling disorder (n = 35), individuals with cocaine-use disorder (n = 3

A dual neural network ensemble approach for multiclass brain tumor classification.

The present study is conducted to develop an interactive computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system for assisting radiologists in multiclass classification of brain tumors. In this paper, primary brain tumors such as astrocytoma, glioblastoma multiforme, childhood tumor-medulloblastoma, meningioma and secondary tumor-metastases along with normal regions are classified by a dual level neural network ensemble. Two hundred eighteen texture and intensity features are extracted from 856 segmented regions of interest (SROIs) and are taken as input. PCA is used for reduction of dimensionality of the featu

A clonogenic survival assay of neural stem cells in rat spinal cord after exposure to ionizing radiation.

Neural stem cells play an important role in neurogenesis of the adult central nervous system (CNS). Inhibition of neurogenesis has been suggested to be an underlying mechanism of radiation-induced CNS damage. Here we developed an in vivo/ in vitro clonogenic assay to characterize the survival of neural stem cells after exposure to ionizing radiation. Cells were isolated from the rat cervical spinal cord and plated as single cell suspensions in defined medium containing epidermal growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor. The survival of the proliferating cells was determined by their ab

PTBP1: A master regulator of neural development and transdifferentiation-promise and pitfalls.

The polypyrimidine tract-binding protein 1 (PTBP1), a pivotal RNA-binding protein and splicing regulator, is emerging as a master orchestrator of neuronal fate determination, neurodevelopment, and neural function through its central role in alternative splicing. We synthesize current knowledge on PTBP1's multifaceted roles in orchestrating neural tube formation, neuronal migration, and synaptic circuit assembly through precise control of alternative splicing programs. We critically examine the rapidly evolving field of PTBP1-mediated cellular reprogramming, analyzing both supportive evidence a

Cognitive Strategy-based neuromodulation optimizes neural communication to improve working memory.

Rapid and effective enhancement of memory function through the integration of neuromodulation and cognitive training has been a longstanding objective in cognitive science and translational medicine. Research indicates that efficient training strategies are associated with rapid improvements in working memory (WM) performance, with successful WM performance linked to neural communication between frontomedial theta oscillations and posterior gamma oscillations. However, direct evidence showing how these strategies regulate neural communication and integrate neuromodulation to boost WM performan

Artificial Synapse Based on Black Phosphorus/SnS2 Heterostructure Transistor for Neuromorphic Computing with High Accuracy.

Artificial synaptic devices have garnered significant attention for overcoming the limitations of conventional von Neumann architecture in neuromorphic computing. However, the reported nonlinear weight update of artificial synapses prevents a hardware neural network from achieving the same high training and learning accuracy levels as those attained by a soft neural work. Despite the large-area fabrication constraints, two-dimensional (2D) materials that have tunable electronic band alignment and optoelectronic properties have emerged as promising candidates for artificial synapses. Here, we d

Disentangling False Memories: Gray Matter Correlates of Memory Sensitivity and Decision Bias.

Human memory is inherently susceptible to errors, including the formation of false memories-instances where individuals mistakenly recall information they were never exposed to. While prior research has largely focused on neural activity associated with false memory, the structural brain correlates of this phenomenon remain relatively unexplored. This study bridges that gap by investigating gray matter structure as it relates to individual differences in false memory performance. Using publicly available magnetic resonance imaging datasets, we analyzed cortical thickness (CT) in neural regions

Toxoplasma Gondii Moderates the Association between Multiple Folate-Cycle Factors and Cognitive Function in U.S. Adults.

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a microscopic, apicomplexan parasite that can infect muscle or neural tissue, including the brain, in humans. While T. gondii infection has been associated with changes in mood, behavior, and cognition, the mechanism remains unclear. Recent evidence suggests that T. gondii may harvest folate from host neural cells. Reduced folate availability is associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and cognitive decline. We hypothesized that impairment in cognitive functioning in subjects seropositive for T. gondii might

[Hydrocephaly does not modify neuroblast chain migration in the subventricular zone (SVZ)].

BACKGROUND: Genetic mutations that affect cilia beating have shown that ependymal cilia not only contribute to the movement of cerebrospinal fluid, but also to direct migratory neuroblasts in the subventricular zone. These ciliary disturbances are associated with hydrocephalus. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hydrocephalus per se alters migration and proliferation of neuroblasts in the subventricular zone, the largest niche of neural stem cells in the adult brain. METHODS: A vinyl acetate film was surgically inserted into the atrium of the Aqueduct of Sylvius of P60 Balb/C mice. Seven days l

Abnormal auditory neural networks in patients with right hemispheric infarction, chronic dizziness, and moyamoya disease: a magnetoencephalogram study.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the auditory cortex is sensitive to cortical insults and to determine the specificity of the insults in three clinical situations with different cortical involvement. Auditory-evoked magnetic fields of ten normal subjects, 8 patients with right hemispheric infarction, 11 with chronic dizziness, and 2 with moyamoya disease were measured. To analyze the abnormality of auditory neural networks, the magnitude ratio and the angle difference (Deltatheta) between response vectors, which were determined from maximum current arrows corresponding to the

Proneural gene self-stimulation in neural precursors: an essential mechanism for sense organ development that is regulated by Notch signaling.

To learn about the acquisition of neural fate by ectodermal cells, we have analyzed a very early sign of neural commitment in Drosophila, namely the specific accumulation of achaete-scute complex (AS-C) proneural proteins in the cell that becomes a sensory organ mother cell (SMC). We have characterized an AS-C enhancer that directs expression specifically in SMCs. This enhancer promotes Scute protein accumulation in these cells, an event essential for sensory organ development in the absence of other AS-C genes. Interspecific sequence comparisons and site-directed mutagenesis show the presence
