Carpal tunnel syndrome caused by hand injuries.

Although carpal tunnel syndrome associated with injury to the wrist is common, it is possible to overlook symptoms of median nerve compression caused by an ascending tenosynovitis secondary to trauma distal to the wrist. One should look for these symptoms in such patients who complain of pain and weakness of the hand, and release the carpal tunnel if nerve compression is suspected.

Asphyxial potentials of spinal grey matter, and of ventral and dorsal roots.

1. Asphyxial potentials of short latency (from a few to about 10 sec) were recorded with mono- and bipolar electrodes from the cat's spinal cord. Monopolarly, a zone of maximum negativity was found somewhat dorsal of the central canal in the dorsal horn. With bipolar leads potentials of opposite polarity were observed in the dorsal and ventral horns. In the dorsal horn the more ventral electrode tip became negative with respect to the more dorsal one, in the ventral horn the more ventral tip became more positive. In the centre of the cord where the monopolar potential showed a maximum the bipo

Self-organizing human heart assembloids with autologous and developmentally relevant cardiac neural crest-derived tissues.

UNLABELLED: Neural crest cells (NCCs) are a multipotent embryonic cell population of ectodermal origin that extensively migrate during early development and contribute to the formation of multiple tissues. Cardiac NCCs play a critical role in heart development by orchestrating outflow tract septation, valve formation, aortic arch artery patterning, parasympathetic innervation, and maturation of the cardiac conduction system. Abnormal migration, proliferation, or differentiation of cardiac NCCs can lead to severe congenital cardiovascular malformations. However, the complexity and timing of ear

Contemporary imaging of auditory implants.

There have been significant advances in the diversity and effectiveness of hearing technologies in recent years. Implanted auditory devices may be divided into those that stimulate the cochlear hair cells (bone conduction devices and middle ear implants), and those that stimulate the neural structures (cochlear implants and central auditory implants). Contemporary preoperative and postoperative imaging may be used to help individualise implant selection, optimise surgical technique and predict auditory outcome. This review will introduce the concepts behind auditory implants, and explains how

Oculocraniosomatic neuromuscular disease with hypoparathyroidism.

During a six-year period, an adolescent girl developed a polyglandular disease characterized by hypoparathyroidism, chemical diabetes, growth failure and pubertal delay, hypercholesterolemia, and hypomagnesemia. A slowly progressive neurological disorder occurred simultaneously, consisting of progressive external ophthalmoplegia, mitochondrial myopathy, ataxia, neural deafness, mental subnormality, atypical retinitis, corneal dystrophy, cataract, and increased protein level in the cerebrospinal fluid. An intracardiac conduction defect was also found. This disorder, the cause of which is uncert

Oligodendroglia as Active Immunomodulators in Demyelinating Diseases.

Oligodendrocytes (OLs) and oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) are essential central nervous system (CNS) cell types responsible for myelin formation, efficient signal conduction, and axonal homeostasis. While the immunological functions of other glial cells-microglia and astrocytes-are well established, the involvement of oligodendrocyte lineage cells (OLCs) in the CNS inflammation has only recently gained recognition. Under pathological conditions, particularly during demyelination, OLCs transition into disease-associated states characterized by the release of pro- and anti-inflammatory

Strategies to Promote Long-Distance Optic Nerve Regeneration.

Mammalian retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in the central nervous system (CNS) often die after optic nerve injury and surviving RGCs fail to re … that regenerated RGC axons could form functional synapses with targeted neurons but exhibited poor neural conduction or partial functional recovery. Therefore, the functional restoration of eye-to-brain pathways remains a greatly challenging issue. Here, we review recent advances in long-distance optic nerve regeneration and the subsequent reconnecting to central …

Morphometric analysis of the cochlear nerve in man.

Fiber diameters were analyzed in the meatal segment of the cochlear nerve from 7 temporal bones obtained from 7 patients. Two patients had normal hearing for their age. Two had sustained noise exposure and one had presbyacusis of predominantly neural type. The cochleae displayed characteristic degeneration patterns. The other two manifested hearing loss of unspecified type. The fiber diameters ranged from 0.5 to 11 microns. The diameter distribution was unimodal in all seven nerves. The means of the diameters ranged from 4.2 to 5.5 microns. They were significantly different between patients wi

Study of the L-Carnitine Effect on Myocardial Bioelectrical Activity by Microelectrode Arrays and Artificial Intelligence Application.

The article presents the results of applying artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze multichannel electrograms of bioelectrical activity registered by microelectrode arrays from myocardium of isolated rat hearts under the influence of L-carnitine and adrenaline. Localization of activation times on electrograms was performed using a new neural network model based on the U-Net architecture adapted for one-dimensional signal segmentation. In the organism, L-carnitine is necessary for the oxidation of fatty acids. But the effects of its supplemental intake on the cardiovascular system are st

Changes of Functional, Morphological, and Inflammatory Reactions in Spontaneous Peripheral Nerve Reinnervation after Thermal Injury.

In recent decades, the use of energy-based devices has substantially increased the incidence of iatrogenic thermal injury to nerves (cauterization, etc.). While recovery of the nerve after thermal injury is important, the changes in neural structure, function, and peripheral inflammatory reactions postinjury remain unclear. This study is aimed at demonstrating the changes mentioned above during the acute, subacute, and chronic stages of nerve reinnervation after thermal injury. Spontaneous reinnervation was evaluated, including the neural structures, nerve conduction abilities, and muscle rege

Auto-immune polyradiculoneuropathy and a novel IgG biomarker in workers exposed to aerosolized porcine brain.

Twenty-four patients, all of whom were exposed to aerosolized porcine brain tissue through work-place environment (abattoir), developed a syndrome of immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy; three also had central nervous system manifestations (transverse myelitis, meningoencephalitis, and aseptic meningitis). Patients had characteristic electrophysiological findings of very distal and proximal conduction slowing (prolonged distal and F-wave latencies, regions where the blood-nerve barrier is the most permeable) and all patients' serum contained a novel IgG immunofluorescence pattern. Nerve pat

Astrocytes as master modulators of neural networks: Synaptic functions and disease-associated dysfunction of astrocytes.

Astrocytes are the most abundant glial cell type in the central nervous system and are essential to the development, plasticity, and maintenance of neural circuits. Astrocytes are heterogeneous, with their diversity rooted in developmental programs modulated by the local brain environment. Astrocytes play integral roles in regulating and coordinating neural activity extending far beyond their metabolic support of neurons and other brain cell phenotypes. Both gray and white matter astrocytes occupy critical functional niches capable of modulating brain physiology on time scales slower than syna

Effect of bladder outlet obstruction on micturition reflex pathways in the rat.

The effect of outlet obstruction on neural pathways to the bladder was examined six weeks after urethral ligation in rats. Ligated rats exhibited a seven-fold increase in bladder weight, a six-fold increase in volume, and significant increases (p less than 0.001) in micturition pressure, residual volume and compliance measured under urethane anesthesia. Unanesthetized ligated rats in comparison to control rats voided smaller volumes of urine more frequently (0.7 vs 1.1 voids/hr., p less than 0.001). Electrophysiological examination of vesical afferent and efferent peripheral neural pathways in

Automated diagnosis of arrhythmia using combination of CNN and LSTM techniques with variable length heart beats.

Arrhythmia is a cardiac conduction disorder characterized by irregular heartbeats. Abnormalities in the conduction system can manifest in the electrocardiographic (ECG) signal. However, it can be challenging and time-consuming to visually assess the ECG signals due to the very low amplitudes. Implementing an automated system in the clinical setting can potentially help expedite diagnosis of arrhythmia, and improve the accuracies. In this paper, we propose an automated system using a combination of convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) for diagnosis of normal sinu
