Decoding the adaptive strategies of versatile diazotrophs to multi-metal(loid) stress in mercury-mining impacted farmland soils.

Diazotrophs are crucial for Earth's nitrogen cycle via biological nitrogen fixation, while also modulating other elemental cycles and exhibiting bioremediation potential. However, their responses to co-occurring heavy metal(loid) (HM) contaminants in polluted soils remain poorly understood. Using combined nifH (encoding nitrogenase) amplicon and metagenomic sequencing, we characterized the taxonomic structure and metabolic potential of diazotrophic community across multi-HM contamination gradients in mercury-mining impacted farmlands (paddy vs. upland). Results identified selenium (upland soil…

Innovative management program for achieving high yield and emission reduction: a case study of wheat/maize rotation production in the North China Plain.

INTRODUCTION: In the North China Plain, inadequate agronomic technology integration in the dominant wheat‒maize rotation causes yield loss, environmental risks, and low nutrient efficiency. Hence, sustainable management strategies are urgently needed to balance yield, enhance nutrient efficiency, and conserve soil nitrogen throughout the annual cycle. METHODS: This 3-year field experiment investigated an innovative management program's effects on yield, biomass, green leaf area index, nutrient dynamics, soil residual nutrients, and environmental cost in a wheat‒maize rotation. Two distinct ag

Formation and characterization of nitric oxide-dependent anammox granules.

As a sustainable nitrogen removal technology, anammox granular sludge (AnGS) has been widely used in treating various wastewater due to its high nitrogen removal rate and resilience to hydraulic and loading disturbances. However, the relatively slow granulation rate of AnGS is a major bottleneck for its broader applications. Nitric oxide (NO), a key nitrogen-cycle intermediate and microbial signaling molecule, can directly serve as an electron acceptor for anammox bacteria, potentially enhancing metabolic activity. Furthermore, direct gas sparging provides shear force to AnGS that can facilita

Plant microbiomes harbor potential to promote nutrient turnover in impoverished substrates of a Brazilian biodiversity hotspot.

The substrates of the Brazilian campos rupestres, a grassland ecosystem, have extremely low concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen, impos … microbiome, such as Xanthobacteraceae and Bryobacteraceae. We also detected the full repertoire of nitrogen cycle-related genes and discovered a lineage of Isosphaeraceae that acquired nitrogen-fixing potential via horizontal gene transfer and might be also involved in nitrification via a metabolic handoff association with Binataceae. We highlight that plant-as …

Ornithine decarboxylase deficiency critically impairs nitrogen metabolism and survival in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC; EC 4.1.1.17) catalyzes the conversion of ornithine to putrescine, the rate-limiting first step for de novo polyamine biosynthesis. Previously, we reported that genetic knockdown of xanthine dehydrogenase 1 (XDH1)-a gene encoding the enzyme involved in the last two steps of uric acid synthesis-causes an increase in ODC transcript levels in fat body of blood-fed Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, suggesting a crosstalk at molecular level between XDH1 and ODC during nitrogen disposal. To further investigate the role of ODC in nitrogen metabolism, we conducted several biochemi

Transforming anaerobic granular sludge into a symbiotic system with aerobic granular and floc sludge: Self-assembly and niche differentiation of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification.

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) facilitates simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) but suffers from protracted start-up and instability. Meanwhile, the synergistic nitrogen removal mechanisms between AGS and its disintegration-derived flocculent sludge (FS) remain unclear. In this study, sieve-enclosed anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) was inoculated into a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and transformed into an AGS-FS symbiotic system. This system achieved up to 80.17% total nitrogen (TN) removal and maintained TN removal as high as 78.05% when treating authentic wastewater. Spatial

Drought stress adaptation in Ficus carica L.: Modulation of ROS scavenging, nitrogen uptake, and rhizosphere bacterial community assembly and functions.

Rhizosphere microorganisms are crucial for plant drought resistance; however, their response to drought stress in fig plants remains poorly understood. In this study, potted 'BoJi Red' fig plants were utilized to systematically investigate drought-induced changes in the structure, assembly processes, and functional potential of rhizosphere bacterial communities. The results showed that drought significantly inhibited fig growth, photosynthesis, and nitrogen uptake, while increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) content and antioxidant enzyme activities, although these enzyme activities decline

Challenges for simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal in microbial aggregates: mass transfer limitation and nitrous oxide production.

The microbial community composition and activity was investigated in aggregates from a lab-scale bioreactor, in which nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal occurred simultaneously. The biomass was highly enriched for polyphosphate accumulating organisms facilitating complete removal of phosphorus from the bulk liquid; however, some inorganic nitrogen still remained at the end of the reactor cycle. This was ascribed to incomplete coupling of nitrification and denitrification causing NO(3)(-) accumulation. After 2 h of aeration, denitrification was dependent on the activity of ni

Microbial Communities Display Key Functional Differences between Reference and Restored Salt Marshes.

Salt marshes, despite their ecological importance (i.e., carbon sequestration) and rapid decline due to climate change and sea-level rise. Salt marsh ecosystems provide essential services such as removal of pollutants, carbon sequestration, and protection of coastal lands from storm surges. These services are strongly influenced by plant productivity, which is closely linked to microbial processes such as biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur. To retain carbon sequestration and other ecological functions, substantial efforts are currently directed towards coastal marsh restora

E. coli and gut health-For the loser now will be later to win.

In humans, commensal gut bacteria participate in a miniature nitrogen cycle, metabolizing dietary nitrate and nitrite. While these processes can generate harmful N-nitrosamines, they may also produce beneficial nitric oxide (NO) or ammonium. Hager and colleagues demonstrate that E. coli, though representing less than 1% of the gut flora, plays a dominant role in reducing nitrate and nitrite in the gut, potentially detoxifying carcinogenic intermediates by converting nitrite to ammonium. Their findings reveal a beneficial facet of a bacterium otherwise often linked to disease.

Uptake of inorganic and organic phosphorus compounds by two marine sponges and their associated bacterial communities in aquaria.

Marine sponges are abundant filter-feeders in benthic ecosystems and many host copious microorganisms. Sponges and their symbionts have emerged as major players within marine biogeochemical cycles, facilitating uptake and release of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur. Sponge holobionts' role in transforming dissolved carbon and nitrogen is well established; however, the same depth of understanding has not yet been extended to phosphorus. In this aquaria-based study, 32 P-labelled orthophosphate and ATP were used to determine that two sponges, Lendenfeldia chondrodes and Hymeniacidon heliophila, both

Novel Alphaproteobacteria transcribe genes for nitric oxide transformation at high levels in a marine oxygen-deficient zone.

Marine oxygen-deficient zones (ODZs) are portions of the ocean where intense nitrogen loss occurs primarily via denitrification and anammox. Despite many decades of study, the identity of the microbes that catalyze nitrogen loss in ODZs is still being elucidated. Intriguingly, high transcription of genes in the same family as the nitric oxide dismutase (nod) gene from Methylomirabilota has been reported in the anoxic core of ODZs. Here, we show that the most abundantly transcribed nod genes in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific ODZ belong to a new order (UBA11136) of Alphaproteobacteria, rathe

Peptide formation mediated by hydrogen cyanide tetramer: a possible prebiotic process.

Chemical evolution on the primitive earth must have involved condensation of alpha-amino acids to peptides. Under aqueous conditions consistent with current conceptions of primordial waters, heating glycerine with the hydrogen cyanide tetramer, diaminomaleonitrile, yields dipeptide. If nitrogen was cycled through primordial waters as cyanide, peptide synthesis by stepwise tetramer-mediated condensation of alpha-amino acids would have been a plausible process.

Glucose release kinetics of different feed ingredients and their impact on short-term growth of pigs by influencing carbon-nitrogen supply synchronization.

BACKGROUND: Pigs fed diets with different ingredients but identical nutritional levels show significant differences in growth performance, indicating that growth may also be influenced by the synchronicity of dietary carbon and nitrogen supply. Therefore, this study aimed to determine glucose release kinetics of various feed ingredients, to investigate a glucose release pattern that is conducive to synchronized carbon-nitrogen supply, and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms by which this synchronization optimizes growth of pigs. RESULTS: We analyzed the glucose release kinetics of 23 feed

Antibiotic resistance gene control coupled with enhanced denitrification in a pilot-scale biochar-based biofiltration amended with goethite.

Biofiltration systems can synergistically remove multiple pollutants from paddy field drainage, including nutrients and emerging contaminants such as antibiotic residues. However, their application is often limited by insufficient denitrification, which can also create nitrosative stress that induce horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among denitrifying bacteria, thereby posing potential secondary environmental risks. In this study, a pilot-scale innovative biochar-based biofiltration (IBBF) system amended with goethite was developed and operated over two rice-growing cyc

Prussian blue analog-derived Fe-Mn oxides for the enhanced activation of persulfate in sulfadiazine degradation: radical generation mechanism and electron transfer.

Advanced oxidation processes, especially those engaging in persulfate activation, are one of the emerging technologies for the degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants. This study used Fe and Mn-loaded Prussian blue analogs (FeMn-PBA) as precursors to synthesize a nitrogen-doped graphene shell (FeMn@NG) through calcination in a nitrogen atmosphere. This was then employed as a catalyst to initiate the degradation of sulfadiazine (SD) using persulfate. The encapsulated FeMn bimetallic nanoparticles with various oxidation states undergo redox cycling, which promotes the rapid generation of

Nighttime radical observations and chemistry.

The nitrate radical, NO(3), is photochemically unstable but is one of the most chemically important species in the nocturnal atmosphere. It is accompanied by the presence of dinitrogen pentoxide, N(2)O(5), with which it is in rapid thermal equilibrium at lower tropospheric temperatures. These two nitrogen oxides participate in numerous atmospheric chemical systems. NO(3) reactions with VOCs and organic sulphur species are important, or in some cases even dominant, oxidation pathways, impacting the budgets of these species and their degradation products. These oxidative reactions, together with

Phytoremediation of heavy and transition metals aided by legume-rhizobia symbiosis.

Legumes are important for nitrogen cycling in the environment and agriculture due to the ability of nitrogen fixation by rhizobia. In this review, we introduce an important and potential role of legume-rhizobia symbiosis in aiding phytoremediation of some metal contaminated soils as various legumes have been found to be the dominant plant species in metal contaminated areas. Resistant rhizobia used for phytoremediation could act on metals directly by chelation, precipitation, transformation, biosorption and accumulation. Moreover, the plant growth promoting (PGP) traits of rhizobia including n

Dietary records in cosmopolitan copepod Calanus spp. revealed large contribution of dinoflagellates in subarctic Pacific.

Global warming and the resulting surface seawater stratification have led to dominance of small phytoplankton, driving substantial changes in planktonic ecosystem structure. This study investigates the composition and nitrogen sources of phytoplankton and other basal resources by analyzing the cosmopolitan copepod Calanus spp. in western North Pacific. Carbon isotope ratios of amino acids (δ13CAA) in Calanus spp. tissue revealed geographically distinct basal diets: N2-fixing organisms (19.6 ± 5.8%) and heterotrophic bacteria (30.6 ± 5.3%) in the tropical and subtropical Pacific, and dinoflagel
