Verification and tissue-specific expression of nifU-like gene from the amphioxus Branchiostoma belcheri.

A nifU-like gene exhibiting similarity to nifU of nitrogen fixation gene cluster was identified for the first time from the gut cDNA library of amphioxus Branchiostoma belcheri. Both RT-PCR and Northern blotting as well as in situ hybridization histochemistry verified that the cDNA represents an amphioxus nifU-like gene rather than a microbial contaminant. The nifU-like gene encodes a protein of 164 amino acid residues including a highly conserved U-type motif (C-X26-C-X43-C), and shares 66-86% identity to NifU-like proteins from a variety of species including vertebrates, invertebrates and mi…

Iron Supplementation Influence on the Gut Microbiota and Probiotic Intake Effect in Iron Deficiency-A Literature-Based Review.

Iron deficiency in the human body is a global issue with an impact on more than two billion individuals worldwide. The most important functions ensured by adequate amounts of iron in the body are related to transport and storage of oxygen, electron transfer, mediation of oxidation-reduction reactions, synthesis of hormones, the replication of DNA, cell cycle restoration and control, fixation of nitrogen, and antioxidant effects. In the case of iron deficiency, even marginal insufficiencies may impair the proper functionality of the human body. On the other hand, an excess in iron concentration

Linking cellulose fiber sediment methyl mercury levels to organic matter decay and major element composition.

Methylation of mercury (Hg) to highly toxic methyl Hg (MeHg), a process known to occur when organic matter (OM) decomposition leads to anoxia, is considered a worldwide threat to aquatic ecosystems and human health. We measured temporal and spatial variations in sediment MeHg, total Hg (THg), and major elements in a freshwater lagoon in Sweden polluted with Hg-laden cellulose fibers. Fiber decomposition, confined to a narrow surface layer, resulted in loss of carbon (C), uptake of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S), and increased MeHg levels. Notably, fiber decomposition and subseque

Forest calcium depletion and biotic retention along a soil nitrogen gradient.

High nitrogen (N) accumulation in terrestrial ecosystems can shift patterns of nutrient limitation and deficiency beyond N toward other nutrients, most notably phosphorus (P) and base cations (calcium [Ca], magnesium [Mg], and potassium [K]). We examined how naturally high N accumulation from a legacy of symbiotic N fixation shaped P and base cation cycling across a gradient of nine temperate conifer forests in the Oregon Coast Range. We were particularly interested in whether long-term legacies of symbiotic N fixation promoted coupled N and organic P accumulation in soils, and whether biotic

Microalgae-mediated treatment of steel industry reverse osmosis concentrate integrated with flue gas carbon fixation: From laboratory selection to pilot-scale verification.

To address the dual environmental challenges of CO2 emissions and reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate in the steel industry, this study developed an integrated microalgae-based treatment strategy. The strategy consisted of two sequential phases, including laboratory-scale screening of microalgal strains and subsequent pilot-scale validation under real industrial conditions. Eight microalgal strains were initially evaluated using RO concentrate and simulated flue gas (20 % CO2), among which Chlorella LJ34 exhibited superior performance in biomass production (1.26 g/L dry weight), nutrient removal

Polyhydroxybutyrates Production by Azospirillum brasilense as a Microalgal Growth Promotion Trait During CO2 Fixation from Biogas.

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a compound produced by the Azospirillum genus to ensure its adaptation and survival in stressful conditions. Particularly, the PHB production by Azospirillum brasilense is related to improving colonization and promoting plant growth during its interaction with plants. Nowadays, this bacterium is considered a suitable partner to improve microalgal performance during the biogas upgrade process-an effluent with a stressful composition (25% CO2-75% CH4) for this bacterium. Thus, the present study evaluates changes in gene expression and PHB production by A. brasilense

Oxygen-sensitive mechanisms and protective strategies of metalloenzymes.

The highly reactive metal cofactors enable metalloenzymes to catalyze a wide range of biologically important reactions, including carbon dioxide fixation, nitrogen fixation, and hydrogen evolution, but also render many of them vulnerable to oxygen (O2)-induced damage. O2 sensitivity has long been a major bottleneck limiting the mechanistic study and industrial applications of metalloenzymes. In this review, we systematically analyze the molecular basis of O2 lability and the naturally evolved O2 resistance across five representative O2-sensitive metalloenzyme systems. Our analysis reveals that…

Is Arachis pintoi associated with effective native rhizobial strains in the Central Highlands of Vietnam?

AIMS: Intensive agricultural practices have led to severe soil degradation in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Integrating legumes as cover crops is a promising strategy to restore soil fertility via biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). Arachis pintoi has been increasingly promoted in Vietnam for adoption as a cover crop but the diversity and efficiency of its native rhizobial partners remain poorly documented. This study assessed the diversity of indigenous rhizobial strains nodulating A. pintoi in the Central Highlands of Vietnam and evaluated their symbiotic efficiency and ability to suppor…

Nitric and nitrous acid formation in plasma-treated water: Decisive role of nitrogen oxides (NOx=1-3).

Nitrogen fixation using low-temperature plasma, particularly in relation to plasma-treated water (PTW) and its chemical and physical properties, has received a renewed research focus. Dissolving highly concentrated nitrogen oxides (NOx = 1-3) generated by air discharge into water results in the formation of two aqueous oxiacids (nitrous and nitric acids; HNOy = 2,3) and their conjugates (nitrate and nitrite ions; NOy-). Nonlinear formation of these species in PTW with respect to plasma conditions has been observed; however, the significance of the time-varying NOx on this nonlinearity has not …

A diazotrophy-ammoniotrophy dual growth model for the sulfate reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio vulgaris var. Hildenborough.

Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) comprise one of the few prokaryotic groups in which biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is common. Recent studies have highlighted SRB roles in N cycling, particularly in oligotrophic coastal and benthic environments where they could contribute significantly to N input. Most studies of SRB have focused on sulfur cycling and SRB growth models have primarily aimed at understanding the effects of electron sources, with N usually provided as fixed-N (nitrate, ammonium). Mechanistic links between SRB nitrogen-fixing metabolism and growth are not well understood, parti…
