BACKGROUND: The shortage of nurses is a global health problem and one of the main challenges for healthcare systems throughout the world including Iran. One of factors that affect the migration trends is psychological needs satisfaction. This study aimed at identifying the psychological factors which persuade Iranian nurses to migrate and suggesting necessary measures in this regard.
METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted through a traditional content analysis approach on 20 working Iranian nurses who are migrating to other countries between 2015 and 2017. Data were collected through i

AIM: To evaluate the impact of the serious game 'Home Visit Navigator' on undergraduate nursing students' motivation, engagement and learning outcomes during home-visit training.
BACKGROUND: Some challenges of traditional community-nursing home-visit education include uneven practical resources, lack of spatial context in textual case studies and a disjunction between theory and practice, affecting student engagement and learning effectiveness. Although serious games enhance engagement, reduce cognitive load and improve learning outcomes, their application in community nursing home-visit teac

While Haiti was still recovering from the January 12, 2010, magnitude-7 earthquake, an outbreak of cholera spread throughout the nation, soon reaching epidemic proportions. Working through the faith-based nongovernmental organization Samaritan's Purse, an NP, an epidemiologist, and a physician joined the effort to prevent the spread of disease and treat those affected. Here they describe the prevention and intervention campaigns their organization initiated, how they prepared for each, and the essential elements of their operations.

Swiss hospitals are characterized by an increasing diversity, in the sense of personal and social differences such as including origin, gender language, skills, age, lifestyles and social status. Diversity is a challenge for hospitals. It is crucial to language barriers and migration and their clinical consequences. In spite of a trend towards interpreter services "going professional", interpreters are only reluctantly used. This is surprising. In this article we deal with three questions: What are clinical consequences of language barriers? How can language barriers be overcome? Should nurses

Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is a postviral syndrome whose dominant clinical features are exercise-induced muscle fatigue, disturbances in cognitive functioning and symptoms of overactivity of the autonomic nervous system. The syndrome tends to affect previously fit young adults between the ages of 20 and 40 but no age group is excluded. One recent epidemiological survey suggested a prevalence rate of 1.3 per 1000 adults, with females outnumbering males by 1.8:1. ME is currently the subject of intense medical (and media) debate, especially over its pathophysiology and management. It has also

This study used surveys from 677 home healthcare aides and nurses to explore factors associated with assaults by patients. Among respondents, 4.6% reported one or more patient assaults (being hit, kicked, pinched, shoved, or bitten) during the past year. Logistic regression analysis examined associations between several potential risk factors and assaults. Three factors were significant, including having one or more patients with dementia (OR = 4.31, 95% CI 1.47-12.67), routinely handling patients (OR = 8.48, 95% CI 1.89-37.94), and perceiving threats of violence by others in and around patien

AIM: To describe the development and evaluation of a novel virtual practice placement.
BACKGROUND: Health systems around the world face the challenge of recruiting and retaining sufficient nursing staff to provide high quality care. The need to train more nurses makes it hard to provide sufficient and varied high quality student placements to all students. This paper reports the result of one approach to the provision of a novel virtual placement for pre-registration student nurses.
DESIGN: Online virtual placement evaluated by a questionnaire conducted after the placement.
METHODS: A total

PURPOSE: The impact of moving out of nursing homes into community-based settings for adults with cerebral palsy was assessed by comparing the health and community functioning of movers and non-movers at time 1 and 3 years later at time 2.
SUBJECTS: The sample included 83 non-movers and 28 movers age 30 years and older who initially were living in nursing homes. The majority of residents had severe to profound mental retardation. The movers transferred to 15 community-based settings between 1 and 3 years (mean of 2 years) prior to the time 2 assessment. Assessments of residents at baseline and

Leading a successful coalition that benefits both the members and the community is a difficult task. Coalitions are complex and require a great deal of skill to initiate, lead, and evaluate. This article examines a successful coalition, developed to build community capacity to address fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). FASD is a complex, multidimensional health issue common in many communities. Coalitions can be effective in tackling these types of issues and fit with community capacity-building approaches to health promotion. The Internal Coalition Outcome Hierarchy (ICOH) model (Cramer,

The COVID-19 pandemic altered traditional education models and school nursing practice during the 2020-2021 school year. As schools plan to reopen for the 2021-2022 school year, school nurses must arm themselves with the most recent evidence-based knowledge and tools to promote the health and safety of the school community. Schools will need to continue infection control measures and strategies to support the social emotional needs of students and staff to promote a safe and healthy learning environment on return to school. Partnered with local health departments, school nurses are vital to mi

AIM: Oral care is one of the most neglected nursing practices owing to a lack of training, standard nursing oral care guidelines and low confidence and skills. There is little evidence to inform the development of oral care training and guidelines, which ideally should be done in collaboration with oral health professionals. Further, there is a lack of research, particularly in New Zealand, with nursing staff caring for care-dependent older people, including those ageing in their own homes. This pilot study aimed to determine the impact of oral care training on nursing staff knowledge, attitud

Background/Objective: Research has indicated that providing care during the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted healthcare providers' wellbeing and burnout. Much of the literature has focused on emergency department (ED) physicians and nurses, including the distinct challenges they faced caring for persons experiencing homelessness (PEH), including addressing unmet basic needs, limited discharge options, and disruptions to community-based health and social services during the pandemic. Comparatively little research has examined the experiences of other multidisciplinary team members caring f

Inequalities in people's health due to economic or social circumstances remain a persistent challenge in the UK, with people from disadvantaged communities disproportionately likely to die earlier and experience more health issues than the general population. Health promotion has a vital role in reversing health inequalities and requires a focus on structural and political-level determinants of health, rather than individuals' lifestyle choices. However, while health promotion is a significant aspect of nurse education curricula, individual nurses may experience role confusion regarding the ap

Background: Dental caries is the most prevalent preventable childhood disease and a major public health priority. Local authorities in England have a statutory responsibility to improve child health, including oral health, through the "Healthy Child Programme." The "Healthy Child Programme," which includes the provision of oral health advice is delivered by health visitors to parents of young children. To date, research has mainly concentrated on individual interactions between health visitors and parents, with less attention given to the broader context in which these oral health conversation

The revulsion prompted by the discovery of head lice on a child's head, and the money spent by the NHS each year on supplying licensed medicines for head lice, is disproportionate to the medical impact that lice have on their hosts. This article discusses the evidence available on the effectiveness of the commonest parasiticidal preparations, and argues the case for a more rational, simpler and cost-effective response to this common problem.

BACKGROUND: The Ebola virus, a highly infectious and deadly pathogen, has posed a significant public health threat in West Africa for several decades. Liberia is one of the most severely affected countries. Healthcare personnel, including nurses, are on the front lines of patient care, and their perspectives are invaluable in understanding the challenges that arise during outbreaks, especially in implementing prevention measures.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the potential risk components and prevention measures of the Ebola virus disease (EVD).
METHODS: This study used an explorato

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests that a shortage of nursing home beds in Latino communities and segregation within facilities in urban settings may contribute to low utilization patterns that both Latino and African American elders exhibit. In order to explore structural barriers to nursing home care for African American and Latino families, this study examines the supply and ethnoracial composition of nursing homes in Chicago communities.
DESIGN: With data from the 1990 US Census of Population and Illinois' 1994 Long-Term Care Facility Survey, regression was used to determine if Latino
