Major advances in our understanding of nutritional influences on bovine health.

The Journal of Dairy Science has increasingly become a primary outlet for scientific research concerning the health of the dairy cow and her calf. This paper attempts to highlight Journal of Dairy Science articles that have linked nutrition and nutritional strategies to reduce disease incidence on the dairy farm. Disorders associated with an animal's inability to cope with the demands of high production include diseases such as milk fever and ketosis, which clearly are related to the cow's inability to maintain bodily functions in the face of negative calcium or energy balance. Improved nutrit

Dietary Risk Factors and Eating Behaviors in Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD).

Dietary risk factors play a fundamental role in the prevention and progression of atherosclerosis and PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease). The impact of nutrition, however, defined as the process of taking in food and using it for growth, metabolism and repair, remains undefined with regard to PAD. This article describes the interplay between nutrition and the development/progression of PAD. We reviewed 688 articles, including key articles, narrative and systematic reviews, meta-analyses and clinical studies. We analyzed the interaction between nutrition and PAD predictors, and subsequently crea

Protocol for the nonoperative treatment of obstructing intramural duodenal hematoma during childhood.

A prospective plan for the nonoperative treatment of obstructing intramural duodenal hematoma was developed to (1) promptly establish the diagnosis and rule out transmural leaks by obtaining a contrast roentgenogram on admission and to subsequently study evolution of the obstructing intramural duodenal hematoma with sequential roentgenograms at 5 to 7 day intervals; (2) identify associated pancreatic injury with ultrasonography and serum amylase and lipase determinations; and (3) to determine effectiveness of nasogastric suction and total parenteral nutrition. Twelve children, who ranged in ag

Timing and outcome of stoma closure in very low birth weight infants with surgical intestinal disorders.

PURPOSE: Very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs) are at risk of surgical intestinal disorders including necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), focal intestinal perforation (FIP), and meconium-related ileus (MRI). We conducted this study to verify whether the timing of stoma closure and that of enteral nutrition establishment after stoma closure in VLBWIs differ among the most common disorders. METHODS: A retrospective multicenter study was conducted at 11 institutes. We reviewed the timing of stoma closure and enteral nutrition establishment in VLBWIs who underwent stoma creation for intestinal diso

[Use of ready-to-use (RTU) products in home-based parenteral nutrition].

AIMS: To analyze the real possibility to use ready-to-use multichamber bags for total parenteral nutrition in adult patients on home parenteral nutrition. METHODS: In June 2005 we studied the adult patients on home parenteral nutrition treatment controlled by the Nutritional Support Unit from an University Hospital. Demographic data, data relating to underlying disease state; infusion regimen and the necessity to modify it; body mass index, fat free mass index, and Karnofsky index evolution, and complications related to parenteral nutrition were assessed. RESULTS: At the time of the study, 8

Causes and management of intestinal failure in children.

Intestinal failure is a condition requiring the use of parenteral nutrition as long as it persists. Causes of severe protracted intestinal failure include short bowel syndrome, congenital diseases of enterocyte development, and severe motility disorders (total or subtotal aganglionosis or chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction syndrome). Intestinal failure may be irreversible in some patients, thus requiring permanent parenteral nutrition. Liver disease may develop with subsequent end-stage liver cirrhosis in patients with intestinal failure as a consequence of both underlying digestive disease

[Advances and current topics in the study of metabolism and nutrition of pediatric patients].

Scientific meetings on surgical metabolism and nutrition in pediatric patients have been held 13 times, once a year since 1971 as an evening session of the annual meetings of Japanese Society of Pediatric Surgeons. The initial meeting was established by several pediatric surgeons who were interested in surgical metabolism and nutrition, for the purpose of making progress and development in this particular field. At these meetings, many papers dealing with different problems on transfusion including total parenteral nutrition, on tube feeding nutrition including elemental diet, and on surgical

Nutrition and behavior: complex interdisciplinary research.

Nutrition and behavior research presents a particularly challenging field of study for scientists. An overview is provided of research on nutrition and behavior of adequately nourished populations in industrialized countries. Discussions and findings from research presented include: refined carbohydrate consumption, maladaptive behavior, behavior disorders and learning; a history of the 'Feingold diet' and the basis for its controversy; an examination of recent critiques of research on artificial food dyes and hyperkinesis; indications for dietary intervention of hyperactive preschoolers; the

Nutrition and Health in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning Community: A Narrative Review.

Sexual and gender minorities have a higher risk for health and nutrition-related disparities across the life course compared to the heterosexual or cisgender population. Experiences of stigmatization and discrimination are associated with diminished mental health quality and psychological distress, which are risk factors for developing various eating disorders. Other nutrition disparities include increased risk for food insecurity, body dissatisfaction, and weight complications, such as those experienced by the transgender population in association with gender-affirming hormone therapies. Parenteral versus enteral nutrition in cancer patients: indications and practice.

Prospective randomly controlled trials have failed to demonstrate the clinical efficacy of providing nutritional support to most cancer patients in terms of morbidity, mortality, and duration of hospitalization. Serious shortcomings in study design have limited the possibility of drawing definitive conclusions from the data. Thus, nutritional intervention needs to be seen as a method of support, with the aim of maintaining nutritional and functional status during the stress of the oncology treatment to prevent or attenuate cachexia. There is no disease during which the patient benefits from pr

Role of enteral nutrition in advanced cancer patients: indications and contraindications of the different techniques employed.

Over the last 20 years there has been great progress regarding total parenteral nutrition and enteral nutrition for patients who cannot take food by mouth or cannot swallow, or so that controlled feeding can be established in anorexic and malnourished patients. The use and the role of artificial nutrition is still controversial in advanced cancer patients. Such controversies often are due to the fact that these patients have a survival expectancy that varies from one to several months. The present review describes the most frequent techniques used for enteral nutrition (nasoenteral tubes, gast

How Physicians Can Assess and Address Dietary Behaviors to Reduce Chronic Disease Risk.

With the growing burden of diet-related chronic disease impacting the public's health, nutrition counseling in a primary care setting is essential and can be accomplished through brief and creative approaches. This article reviews an example of a brief dietary assessment and counseling tool and counseling strategies focusing on dietary behavior changes that emphasize impact on health outcomes, ease of behavior change, and affordability. These, plus integrating office supports, are practical ways to start the conversation about improving diet quality with patients. Collaborative efforts in nutr

Acne and nutrition: hypotheses, myths and facts.

Acne is an inflammatory and multifactorial skin disease. Different external and internal factors, including air pollution, aggressive skincare products, medication, mechanical, hormonal and familial factors and, more recently, lifestyle and stress, have been suggested as having an impact on acne. Moreover, for many years nutrition was believed to cause or worsen acne. Over the last decades, however, it has become a dermatological doctrine that there is no direct association between diet and acne. Even if recent research has allowed to identify certain nutritional elements and behaviour that ma

Nutritional Management of Acute and Chronic Pancreatitis.

There is an increased risk of malnutrition in pediatric pancreatic disorders. Acute pancreatitis results in a hypermetabolic and hypercatabolic state and enteral nutrition (EN) may improve patient outcomes. In pediatric pancreatitis, EN should be introduced early and advanced as tolerated. EN is preferred over parental nutrition. Chronic pancreatitis is associated with malnutrition, impaired growth and development, and pancreatic insufficiency. Children with chronic pancreatitis should be routinely screened for exocrine and endocrine pancreatic insufficiency and growth and nutritional deficien

[Artificial nutrition in kidney failure].

Renal failure in itself generates a state of malnutrition, due to three main causes: inadequate ingestion (anorexia, vomiting or diet insufficiencies), the existence of catabolic factors (proteins, acidosis, PTH) and extrarenal depuration (which provokes a lack of amino acids and vitamins). Artificial nutrition constitutes a series of measures that can be adopted to act upon each of the above causes. Adequate ingestion compared to inadequate ingestion can be performed orally (especially in chronic renal failure) by parenteral administration (preferable in acute renal failure) and enteral admin

Nutrition education in medical schools: From the ESPEN NEMS position paper to a practical teaching tool.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nutrition education represents a cornerstone in the training of healthcare professionals, particularly physicians, as it contributes to the optimization of therapeutic strategies for nutritional disorders. In 2017, the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) launched the Nutrition Education in Medical Schools (NEMS) Project with the aim of implementing nutrition education in all medical schools. In 2019, the NEMS working group published its first position paper, underscoring the need for mandatory nutrition education for all medical students and outlin
