Open reduction and internal fixation of unstable distal radius fractures with a low-profile plate: a multicenter study of 73 fractures.

A study of acute, dorsally displaced, unstable (high-energy) fractures of the distal radius was conducted to determine the safety and efficacy of a new low-profile plate for unstable distal radius fractures. Thirteen surgeons in 11 US cities participated in the study. A minimum follow-up period of 1 year was required to be included in the study. Seventy-three fractures in 71 patients met this criterion. Each fracture was treated according to a prospective protocol. An autogenous bone graft was used in 64 fractures. All procedures were completed using a radiolucent sterile traction table. No ex

Comparison of closed percutaneous screw reduction versus open reduction and internal fixation in the treatment of frontal sinus fractures: A retrospective study.

The aim of this study was to compare closed percutaneous screw reduction to traditional open reduction-internal fixation (OR-IF) for the treatment of anterior table fractures. Both groups were evaluated in terms of operative variables, complications, and treatment success. Of 32 patients included, 19 patients underwent OR-IF, while 13 underwent percutaneous screw reduction. The median operative time, length of hospital stays, and treatment cost of the OR-IF group were 100 min (range 60-130), 4 days (range 3-9), and $727 (range $642-$1291), respectively. The same variables for the closed reduct

Delayed treatment of femoral neck fractures in 58 children: open reduction internal fixation versus closed reduction internal fixation.

UNLABELLED: The best treatment plan for femoral neck fractures in children in whom treatment is delayed by more than 24 h is unclear because of the limited number of such cases reported. This study compares the outcomes of closed and open reduction performed 24 h after the injury was sustained. We retrospectively reviewed 58 cases (40 males, 18 females) of femoral neck fractures reset after more than a 24-h delay at our hospital (May 2005 to May 2014). According to Delbet's classification, there were 30 type II fractures (51.7%), 21 type III fractures (36.2%), and seven type IV fractures (12.1

Clinical comparison between the retromandibular approach for reduction and fixation and endoscope-assisted open reduction and internal fixation for mandibular condyle fractures.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscope-assisted transoral open reduction and internal fixation (EAORIF) for mandibular condyle fractures has recently become popular because it is minimally invasive, provides excellent visibility without a large incision, and reduces surgical scarring and the risk of facial nerve injury. This report describes a retrospective clinical study that compared certain clinical parameters, including postoperative function, between the retromandibular (RM) approach and EAORIF. METHODS: Fifteen patients were treated by the RM approach, whereas 15 underwent EAORIF between July 2006 and Se

Open reduction and internal fixation compared to closed reduction and external fixation in distal radial fractures: a randomized study of 50 patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In unstable distal radial fractures that are impossible to reduce or to maintain in reduced position, the treatment of choice is operation. The type of operation and the choice of implant, however, is a matter of discussion. Our aim was to investigate whether open reduction and internal fixation would produce a better result than traditional external fixation. METHODS: 50 patients with an unstable or comminute distal radius fracture were randomized to either closed reduction and bridging external fixation, or open reduction and internal fixation using the TriMed system

A case of recurrent proximal femoral fracture after open reduction and internal fixation with bilateral locking plates for a Rorabeck type II periprosthetic fracture.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Periprosthetic distal femur fractures (PDFFs) are rare complications that may occur during or after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The incidence of PDFFs is increasing. Plate internal fixation has demonstrated positive results. However, there is limited research available on the recurrence of periimplant fractures following open reduction and internal fixation with bilateral locking plates. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a Rorabeck type II fracture. Based on the patient's physical condition and available surgical options, minima

Factors influencing the need for open reduction in ulnar-sided carpometacarpal joint fracture-dislocation: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Ulnar-side carpometacarpal joint (CMCJ) fracture-dislocation is a rare hand injury, accounting for <1% of all hand and wrist injuries, and is often overlooked on plain radiographs. Surgical treatment is usually required, but the optimal approach depends on the fracture pattern and timing of diagnosis. The aim of this study is to explore the factors that make open reduction necessary for proper fracture alignment and to evaluate patient recovery after such procedures. METHODS: This study retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent surgical treatment for ulnar-side CMCJ fracture

Primary Arthrodesis versus Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Lisfranc Joint Fracture-Dislocations in Adults: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The Lisfranc joint is an intricate podiatric medical structure that when injured can prove difficult to treat. No consensus has been established on optimal surgical management for this injury. It is widely debated whether open reduction and internal fixation or primary arthrodesis provides better outcomes for patients. Although literature has been published on this subject, no generalized guidelines have been created. The goal of this study was to analyze high-level meta-analyses to draw conclusions about surgical interventions for Lisfranc joint injuries. METHODS: A literature re

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of a Type IV Capitellum Fracture Through a Transolecranon Tunnel: A Case Report.

CASE: A 60-year-old woman sustained a type IV capitellum fracture from falling on an outstretched arm. Open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) was performed using an anconeus approach, and a transolecranon tunnel was created to place a trochlear screw. The patient showed good clinical outcomes with almost full range of motion at 6 months. CONCLUSION: With type IV capitellum fractures, the olecranon often obstructs the screw trajectory necessary for anterior-to-posterior fixation of trochlear fragments. Drilling a transolecranon tunnel through the proximal olecranon with the elbow flexed creat

Open reduction and internal fixation of irreducible displaced femoral neck fracture with femoral Neck System: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Most displaced femoral neck fractures can achieve satisfactory anatomical reduction by closed reduction, but there are still some that cannot reset satisfactorily after closed reduction, and open reduction are required. Such fractures that cannot be repositioned successfully by closed reduction are called irreducible displaced femoral neck fractures in this study. The objective of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of direct anterior incision with the Femoral Neck System in the treatment of irreducible displaced femoral fractures. METHODS: A total of 16 young and middle-aged p
