Use of Topical Steroids in Conjunctivitis: A Review of the Evidence.

PURPOSE: Conjunctivitis, or inflammation of the conjunctiva, is a common condition that can be caused by infectious (eg, bacterial or viral infections) and noninfectious (eg, allergy) etiologies. Treatment involves diagnosis of the underlying cause and use of appropriate therapies. A broad-spectrum therapy that can address multiple etiologies, and also the accompanying inflammation, would be very useful. In this review, we discuss the usefulness of topical ophthalmic corticosteroids and ophthalmic formulations that combine corticosteroids with anti-infectives/antibiotics for treating acute inf

Advancing fungal keratitis treatment: transitioning from conventional amphotericin B therapy to nanocarrier-based delivery systems.

Fungal keratitis (FK) is a serious, vision-threatening ocular infection caused by various fungal species. Poor outcomes often leave patients with corneal opacification and loss of vision, occasionally advancing to enucleation due to the lack of effective treatment options. Several health agencies have outlined topical antifungal medications as first-line approaches in treating FK. Commercially available topical antifungal formulations are natamycin (5%), voriconazole (1%), fluconazole (0.2-0.5%), itraconazole (1%), and amphotericin B (0.15%). Different molecules remain effective against variou

Microplastic contamination in commercial eyedrop products: detection and characterization study.

Microplastics (MPs) have become an emerging contaminant of concern, yet their presence in ocular formulations and products remains poorly understood. This study employed a dual-method approach (water dilution and Fenton digestion) coupled with micro-FTIR analysis to investigate the MP contamination in 21 commercial eyedrop products in Malaysia. Our findings demonstrate widespread contamination, with 81% of samples containing detectable MPs. They are predominantly composed of polystyrene (PS) (52%), polyamide (PA) (19%), and polyethylene (PE) (14%). The particle abundance varied significantly a

[Preservatives in ophthalmology].

Preservatives are a legal requirement for eye drops in multidose containers. Moreover, they are necessary for stabilization and intraocular penetration for a number of ophthalmic preparations. Most preservatives act in a relatively unspecific manner as detergents or by oxidative mechanisms and thereby cause side effects at the ocular surface. They may also affect the lens, trabecular meshwork and the retina. Benzalkonium chloride is the most commonly used preservative in ophthalmology and is more toxic than other or newer preservatives, such as polyquaternium-1 (Polyquad), sodium perborate, ox
