The Use of Computer Tomography in Ophthalmology.

Fifty-three orbital lesions of various types were studied by computer tomography to assess the capabilities and limitations of this technique. Although CT scanning in ophthalmology is in its infancy, results showed that it is useful in the investigation of a number of pathological conditions, including congenital anomalies, arteriovenous malformations, bone lesions, trauma, inflammation, granulomas, pseudotumors, epidermoid cysts, and tumors arising in or near the optic nerve, behind the optic bulb, or in the lacrimal region, as well as changes following eye surgery.

Utility of ChatGPT-4o in Creating Patient Handouts in Ophthalmology: A Comparison With American Academy of Ophthalmology Educational Materials.

PURPOSE: This study compares the readability and quality of ChatGPT-4o-generated and American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) patient handouts in English and Spanish, as AAO materials are expert developed but not publicly accessible. METHODS: Ten AAO handouts on common ocular conditions were obtained in English and Spanish. ChatGPT-4o was queried to create handouts at an 8th-grade reading level of comparable length. English readability was assessed with Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG) and Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease, and Spanish readability was assessed with five validated metrics, inclu…

Ophthalmologic Comorbidities in Alopecia Areata.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a complex disease with a multifactorial etiology, in which autoimmune mechanisms play a central role. Increasing evidence suggests that AA may be a systemic condition, potentially affecting organs beyond the skin due to shared pathogenic pathways. One proposed mechanism is the breakdown of immune privilege, a protective state that limits immune activity in specific tissues, such as the hair follicle and the eye. Although research on the relationship between AA and ophthalmic comorbidities remains limited, several studies have reported recurrent ocular abnormalities, whe

Ophthalmologic Presentations of Incontinentia Pigmenti.

Purpose: To characterize treatments and outcomes in incontinentia pigmenti. Methods: Cases of incontinentia pigmenti were consecutively identified from a retina practice. Inclusion criteria were patients with incontinentia pigmenti with at least 6 months of follow-up. All patients had a full ophthalmic examination, including imaging with widefield fundus photography and widefield fluorescein angiography. Eyes with areas of avascular retina were treated with laser photocoagulation (except for 1 eye with mild changes). Results: Thirty-six eyes of 18 patients with incontinentia pigmenti were incl

[Ophthalmologic Evaluation of Fitness to Drive].

The ophthalmologist must know the essential principles of the driving fitness assessment. In the case of applications for a driving license renewal, it must always be clarified before the examination whether the fitness to drive is to be checked in accordance with the special regulation for holders of a driving license issued up to December 31, 1998 (see Annex 6 to § 12 of the FeV under 2.2.3 Special regulations for the old German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations). Within the scope of grandfathering, this continues to be valid only for the so-called old holders. A categorization of the manif

Imaging of Painful Ophthalmologic Disorders.

Cross-sectional imaging with computed tomography (CT) and MRI are diagnostic examinations useful in the diagnosis of painful ophthalmologic disorders and their potential complications. CT is a first-line imaging study for suspected orbital infections, particularly useful in differentiating preseptal cellulitis and orbital cellulitis and detecting complications such as orbital abscess. When compared with CT, MRI is better for orbital soft tissue evaluation, particularly useful for optic neuritis, ocular diseases such as endophthalmitis, and invasive fungal rhinosinusitis with orbital involvemen

Ophthalmological Manifestations of Hereditary Myopathies.

BACKGROUND: Myopathies are neuromuscular disorders of the skeletal muscles, in which the main symptom is muscle weakness due to muscle fiber dysfunction. Myopathies may be classified into two main categories: inherited and acquired. Hereditary myopathies are a heterogeneous group of diseases that include congenital myopathies, mitochondrial myopathies, myotonic syndromes, muscular dystrophies, and other myopathies. PURPOSE: The objective of this paper is to review the ophthalmological findings and genetic patterns of hereditary myopathies. METHODS: This review is based on articles obtained b

Ophthalmological findings in Gaucher disease.

Gaucher disease is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the gene GBA1, which encodes the lysosomal protein glucocerebrosidase. Patients with Gaucher disease generally have a variety of clinical manifestations ranging from visceral to neurological involvement and some develop ocular involvement. The most commonly affected organs include the spleen, liver, and bone. Moreover, patients often have hepatosplenomegaly, thrombocytopenia, anemia, and bone involvement related to deficient glucocerebrosidase and the subsequent accumulation of glucosylceramide and gluc
