[Local and diffuse changes in the nerve fiber layer in glaucoma and vascular involvement of the optic papilla. Perimetry correlates].

Alterations in the retinal nerve-fiber layer, as seen in red-free illumination, are early signs of glaucomatous damage. First, small localized defects are often overseen in routine static automated perimetry, as the earliest psychophysical correlation is only a slight, localized increase in short-term fluctuation. Larger, absolute nerve-fiber-bundle defects of glaucomatous or vascular origin lead to broad, arcuate visual field defects, known as Bjerrum scotomata. Diffuse atrophy of the retinal nerve-fiber layer can also be seen in glaucomatous eyes, but it is difficult to detect and can theref

[Premedication in fiber optic bronchoscopy from the patient's and the physician's viewpoint--a randomized study for the comparison of midazolam and hydrocodone].

To evaluate side effects and patients' assessment of fiberoptic bronchoscopy under local anesthesia, 122 consecutive patients answered questions from an outside interviewer (an experienced psychiatrist) and not from the endoscopists themselves. The effect of premedication with midazolam (5 mg i.m.) and hydrocodonum (15 mg i.m.) was compared in a randomized study. In a multiple choice questionnaire 68% of all patients indicated considerable fear in the days before bronchoscopy. They were more afraid of the possible diagnosis of cancer (23%) than of dyspnea or asphyxiation (14%). Coughing is con

Fiber-Optic Quantum Dots Sensor for Dynamic and Quantitative Thermal Monitoring of Spheroids toward Single-Cellular Resolution.

Accurate monitoring of thermal dynamics at the single-cellular scale is crucial for elucidating metabolism, signaling pathways and disease mechanisms, yet remains hampered by the limited stability and spatiotemporal resolution of current sensors. Here, we report a fiber-optic quantum dots sensor (FOQDS), which is based on a tapered fiber optic tip functionalized with CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs and encapsulated by a dense Al2O3 layer to ensure exceptional long-term stability. FOQDS features a linear thermal response with high sensitivity (145 pm/°C), a temporal resolution of <10 μs, with the potential to

High-Performance Optical Fiber SPR Biosensor for Label-Free Detection of miRNA-588 Toward Osteosarcoma Diagnosis.

Osteosarcoma is a malignant bone tumor for which diagnosis is critical to patient prognosis. MicroRNA-588 is downregulated in osteosarcoma, highlighting its potential as a diagnostic biomarker. However, its low abundance in body fluids makes sensitive detection difficult. This study presents a label-free reflective optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor with optimized probe immobilization for ultrasensitive miRNA-588 detection in serum. The sensor utilizes plasmonic coupling between a gold film and gold nanoparticles to enhance the SPR response. By incorporating an A15 anchor

A fiber optic particle plasmon resonance assay for the detection of neurofilament light as a potential early biomarker for diabetic neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that neurofilament light (NfL) can serve as a blood-based biomarker for diabetic neuropathy (DN), a severe complication that affects half of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Fiber optic particle plasmon resonance (FOPPR) technology, which integrates optical waveguides with noble metal nanoparticles, offers highly sensitive detection of target analytes. It can potentially be applied to measure NfL in blood samples. METHODS: A FOPPR-based plasma NfL assay was developed and validated for imprecision, accuracy, limit of quantitation (LOQ), and

Fiber optic surface plasmon resonance sensor for high-sensitivity detection of MMP10, a diagnostic target for Alzheimer's disease.

The existing in vivo detection methods for Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnostic targets have two problems of inability to detect in real time and poor recognition of ligand biocompatibility, making it difficult to effectively achieve early and rapid screening for AD. This article proposes a fiber optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with a surface-modified quercetin ligand, which successfully detects what we believe to be a novel early AD diagnostic target matrix metalloproteinase-10 (MMP10) in artificial cerebrospinal fluid. It has the characteristics of real-time detection and good bi

Dual-pulse phase-OTDR-based distributed optic-fiber acoustic sensor with active laser frequency compensation.

We report a novel, to the best of our knowledge, distributed optic-fiber acoustic sensor in which active laser frequency compensation is proposed to improve the performance of an in-balanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (IMZI)-based dual-pulse phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (ø-OTDR). By reversely monitoring the interferometric signal from the IMZI, the laser frequency of the sensor system is actively adjusted to compensate both the interferometer arm length jitter and the laser frequency drift itself. Long-term stable interferometric signal is demonstrated, together with 60%

High-sensitivity Mach-Zehnder interferometer temperature sensor based on a no-core optical fiber with a large lateral offset.

We designed and experimentally demonstrated an innovative temperature sensor based on Mach-Zehnder interference, which was formed by splicing a piece of no-core fiber (NCF) between two conventional single-mode fibers (SMFs) with a core offset. The intentional misalignment formed a gap that can be filled with ethanol, and temperature sensing was realized using the mode interference between the two distinct optical paths passing through the NCF cladding and the ethanol solution. Although the NCF length barely influenced the sensor sensitivity, it produced a major impact on the free spectral rang

Target-Induced Chemical Reaction Modulated Optical Fiber-Gated Organic Photoelectrochemical Transistor for in Vivo H2S Detection.

Real time detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in deep brain regions is of great significance. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors hold promise for real-time monitoring but low sensitivity due to the use of small electrode restrained its application. In this study, a miniaturized sensor that integrates organic photoelectrochemical transistors (OPECTs) with optical fiber (OF) microelectrodes was designed for the first time, which can amplify the small PEC signal into large channel current change. A conductive gold layer and cuprous oxide nanoparticles (Cu2O NPs) were sequentially deposited ont

Blood Pressure and Heart Rate Measurements Using Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor with Optical Power Detection Scheme.

A low-cost dual-FBG (fiber Bragg grating) architecture is employed to capture the pulse waveform of the artery at the subject's wrist by measuring changes in optical power. The pulse transit time (PTT), pulse ascending time, and pulse descending time extracted from the pulse waveform are used in a blood pressure (BP) estimation model by fitting the measured BP with the reference BP obtained from a commercial sphygmomanometer. The estimation model is developed using data from 29 subjects at the age of 20 to 54. The results demonstrate that the errors between the calculated values and reference

Computational approaches for the reconstruction of optic nerve fibers along the visual pathway from medical images: a comprehensive review.

Optic never fibers in the visual pathway play significant roles in vision formation. Damages of optic nerve fibers are biomarkers for the diagnosis of various ophthalmological and neurological diseases; also, there is a need to prevent the optic nerve fibers from getting damaged in neurosurgery and radiation therapy. Reconstruction of optic nerve fibers from medical images can facilitate all these clinical applications. Although many computational methods are developed for the reconstruction of optic nerve fibers, a comprehensive review of these methods is still lacking. This paper described b
