This case report describes the successful treatment of a 26-year-old Caucasian male with skeletal and dental Class III malocclusion associated with mild maxillary and mandibular crowding. The patient had anteroposterior and transverse discrepancies with a reverse overjet and bilateral posterior crossbites. The nonextraction treatment plan included aligning and leveling of the teeth in both arches, Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies, and postsurgical correction of the malocclusion. Orthodontic treatment was initiated with custom lingual appliances followed by orthognathic surger

AIM: The aim of the study was to report the use of an elastodontic therapy in a growing patient affected by Dentinogenesis Imperfecta, second class malocclusion, deep bite and lower arch crowding from the deciduous dentition to permanent one.
CASE REPORT: At first, the 5-year-old patient was treated with an elastodontic device known as "Nite-Guide". When the patient was 7 years old, during her first permanent molars and incisors eruption and after optimal house-practices, an Occlus-o-Guide Series G was placed at night and on daylight (two hours a day) performing exercises aimed to activate fa

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is a childhood disease that causes joint swelling and pain, and limitation in the range of joint movements. It is characterized by progressive destruction of the joints. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most frequent systemic inflammatory disease of the temporomandibular joint. When the temporomandibular joint is involved, orthodontic treatment becomes more challenging. This case report shows the treatment of a young patient with a Class II subdivision malocclusion and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Excellent results were achieved and maintained at the 6-year

Mandibular incisor extraction therapy has been used as a treatment option since the early 1900s to relieve tooth size-arch length discrepancies in the anterior segment of the mandible. The advantages of this therapy include potential reduction in treatment time, possibility of achieving better long-term stability in the mandibular anterior segment since inter canine width is not increased and maintenance of the soft-tissue profile because retraction of the mandibular incisors is less compared with mandibular premolar extractions These advantages are counterbalanced, however, by some potential

Conflicting data have been reported in dentistry regarding the diagnostic potential of monitoring body sway while in a static standing bipedalic position. This systematic review reappraises previously reported effects of mandibular position, asymmetric occlusion, and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) on body sway to determine whether there is sufficient evidence for such correlations and to define the potential diagnostic applications in orthodontics. A literature survey was performed using the Medline, LILACS, and SciELO databases, and the Cochrane Library, covering the period from January 1…

Objective : A multimodal therapy was applied to solve a set of related problems including collapse of the posterior segment, high level ging … e tooth and the teeth beside it. A multimodal therapy that included bone grafting, corticotomy, and orthodontics was applied to solve these problems. Grafted bone volume, parallelism of the roots, root resorption, gingival margin, and mobility of the canine on the cleft side were established before surgery, 1 week after surgery, and after straightening of the …

To correct dentofacial deformities, three-dimensional skeletal analysis and computerized orthognathic surgery simulation are used to facilit … hodontic treatment. This approach can reduce the decompensation treatment period of the presurgical orthodontics and contribute to efficient postoperative orthodontic treatments.

Ninety-three per cent of all 12-year old patients at a clinic in western Sweden accepted an invitation to take part in a dental examination in order to evaluate early orthodontic treatment. Treatment in the primary or mixed dentition periods should aim at creating normal craniofacial, occlusal and dental development and, if possible, at reducing the need for later, more complicated treatment. The treatment success was low regarding overjet correction but fairly good with regard to diagnosis and treatment of crossbite/forced occlusion, ectopic eruption and congenitally missing teeth. Whether co

Periodontal disease increases the risk of resorption. The practitioner contemplating doing orthodontics should be cognizant of the above factors in evaluating the risk of root resorption. Demineralized bone matrix has been tested in a clinical study concerning the filling of bone defects in the surgical stomatology. It is reported on the clinical results and the X-ray evaluation of the replacement of bones by demineralized bone matrix. Fifty two implantations in the maxilla and mandible of 51 patients were carried out to be able to evaluate the efficacy of demineralized bone matrix.

(2) A technique for direct bonding to the crown is a simple, one operation procedure which dies not damage the tooth or adjacent tissues. (3) The most beneficial application of force to any preselected aspect of the crown to help reduce traction time can be used. (4) If carried out correctly, there is little likelihood of failure.

INTRODUCTION: It is known that the stability of the results obtained with orthodontic treatment depends, in addition to the functional and aesthetic aspects, also on the adequate planning of the retention devices, the patient's compliance with this new phase, and the physiological changes that the human body experiences over the years, throughout the craniofacial aging process.
OBJECTIVE: This article discusses the importance of the orthodontic retention phase and the influence of diagnosis, planning and execution of corrective treatment of malocclusions, in order to achieve the expected succ

Orthodontics is increasingly ingrained in the overall management of patients with periodontitis. Advanced periodontitis is often characterised by pathological tooth migration, loss of posterior support and incisal proclination. Orthodontics may therefore offer both aesthetic and therapeutic benefit. A tailored approach to treatment, however, is necessary given the myriad of presentations and associated risk. The nuances underpinning effective treatment planning, space creation, treatment mechanics, and retention in the periodontal patient are described.

This clinical paper provides an in-depth exploration of advanced techniques for bonding orthodontic attachments under special circumstances. Challenges arise when bonding brackets to non-enamel surfaces, such as dental restorations, and in conditions such as amelogenesis imperfecta, which affect enamel integrity. Distinct approaches required for bonding to different restorative materials, including glassy ceramics, zirconia, resin composites and metals, are outlined. Moreover, we describe strategies to manage bonding in conditions including amelogenesis imperfecta, hypodontia and microdontia i

INTRODUCTION: Intermaxillary elastics are orthodontic resources widely used in various malocclusions. Their main advantages are low cost, easy insertion and removal by patients, and application versatility. As main disadvantages, we can highlight the need for cooperation from patients and the side effects normally present in treatments with this resource. Knowledge of the biomechanics involved in the use of intermaxillary elastics is essential to take full advantage of the desired effects and avoid unwanted effects in their use.
OBJECTIVE: Therefore, the objective of this article is to descri

BACKGROUND: Larsen syndrome (LS) is a rare disorder of osteochondrodysplasia. In addition to large-joint dislocations, craniofacial anomalies are typical characteristics. In this report, we performed orthodontic analyses, including skeletal and occlusal evaluations, to examine whether the craniofacial skeletal morphology leads to the craniofacial anomalies in LS.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 5 year old Japanese girl who was clinically diagnosed with LS was referred to the orthodontic clinic in the Fukuoka Dental College Medical and Dental Hospital because of a malocclusion. Clinical findings at birth

BACKGROUND: A posterior crossbite occurs when the top back teeth bite inside the bottom back teeth. The prevalence of posterior crossbite is around 4% and 17% of children and adolescents in Europe and America, respectively. Several treatments have been recommended to correct this problem, which is related to such dental issues as tooth attrition, abnormal development of the jaws, joint problems, and imbalanced facial appearance. Treatments involve expanding the upper jaw with an orthodontic appliance, which can be fixed (e.g. quad-helix) or removable (e.g. expansion plate). This is the third u
