Chlorhexidine-releasing orthodontic elastomerics.

The aim of this study was to identify the best combination of chlorhexidine (CHX) with orthodontic elastomerics for prevention of oral disease in orthodontic patients. We used ethyl cellulose (EC) as the polymer, and experimental groups were divided into five groups according to differences in solvent (i.e., ethanol; EtOH, dichloromethane; DCM). CHX release from the coated elastomerics was evaluated with a UV spectrophotometer and observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The antimicrobial release increased over time for 48 h in Group 3 (CDA+EC+30% EtOH/70% DCM), exhibiting the longest s

Clinical application of magnets in orthodontics and biological implications: a review.

Over the last decade magnets have been used in orthodontic and dentofacial orthopaedics and attempts have been made to evaluate the biological implications of magnets and magnetic fields during clinical application. This review aims to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of magnets in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics over traditional techniques, and update related clinical experiences. The treatment of impacted teeth and Class II malocclusions by means of magnetic force is favoured and the correction of Class III and open bite malocclusions involving the use of magnets also appe

Management of Developing Anterior Malocclusion due to SupernumeraryTooth with Preventive and Intercep-tive Approach: A 1½ Year Case Study.

Variety of clinical complications occurs due to the presence of supernumerary teeth, especially mesiodens. It may result in impaction of one or both central incisors which in turn may lead to a variety of malocclusions. Timely intervention not only prevents malocclusion but also the time taken for corrective orthodontics. A complete case report of developing mesiodens' tooth germ resulting in malocclusion including treatment in 1½ year period is presented.

Delayed Diagnosis and Multidisciplinary Management of a Compound Odontoma With Associated Dental Anomalies: A Rare Case Report.

Hyperdontia is a developmental anomaly that can disrupt normal tooth eruption and occlusal harmony. Compound odontomas, although benign and often asymptomatic, may cause delayed eruption and other complications requiring surgical management. This case report details the treatment of a 22-year-old female presenting with failure of eruption of the mandibular left permanent canine. Clinical and radiographic evaluation revealed a retained deciduous canine, a compound odontoma, and a horizontally impacted supernumerary tooth. Surgical intervention under local anesthesia involved extraction of the r

Recovering teeth from a large dentigerous cyst: A case report.

A dentigerous cyst is an odontogenic lesion caused by the expansion of the follicle surrounding the crown of impacted, embedded or unerupted teeth. These cysts may cause destruction of the bone, displacement of adjacent teeth, resorption of their roots and prevent the eruption of cyst-associated permanent teeth. This paper discusses successful use of marsupialization combined with orthodontic treatment to treat cyst-associated impacted permanent teeth and to correct a class II open bite malocclusion.

Surgical and Orthodontic Management of the Ectopic, Labially Impacted, Maxillary Canines: A Case Series.

Maxillary canines are the second most commonly impacted teeth. Two thirds of these impacted canines are palatal, and one third are labially impacted. Maxillary labial impactions comprise approximately 0.33% to 0.75% of the general population. Like palatal impactions, preventive and interceptive methods can be employed to help the impacted tooth erupt and avoid surgical uncovering. Early extraction of appropriate primary teeth and palatal expansion has helped some of these impactions erupt spontaneously. Most labially impacted canines are positioned "in the slot," in a midalveolar location betw

Comprehensive management of malocclusion in maxillary fibrous dysplasia: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a developmental hamartomatous bone disease characterized by a blend of fibrous and osseous entities. Though rarely malignant, the tumor can vary from being small and asymptomatic, to a fairly large sized lesion, progressing gradually, compromising occlusion and facial esthetics. Treatment approach depends on the stage of skeletal maturity. It primarily involves surgical management for stabilizing the disease process. Post-surgical comprehensive dental treatment is necessary for restoring form and function of the jaws and teeth. This article describes compr

Anti-dentine Salivary SIgA in young adults with a history of dental trauma in deciduous teeth.

Anti-dentin autoantibodies are associated with inflammatory root resorption in permanent teeth and are modulated by dental trauma and orthodontic force. However, it is not known whether deciduous tooth trauma can stimulate the development of a humoral immune response against dentin. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of salivary SIgA reactivity against human dentin extract in young adults with a history of trauma in the primary dentition. A sample of 78 patients, aged 18 to 25, who had completed an early childhood (0 to 5 years old) caries prevention program years earlier at the

Orthodontic procedures in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea in children.

INTRODUCTION: Even minor dimensional changes in the child's upper airway can already affect the resistance therein. Craniofacial anomalies may constrict the upper airway and are suspected to be a direct cause of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in children. CASE REPORTS: In the present two cases we report on the successful orthodontic treatment of an 8-year-old girl and a 6 1/2-year-old boy with craniofacial anomalies and severe OSAS diagnosed during a sleep study. The primary treatment aim was to improve the cardio-respiratory situation during sleep by enlarging the upper airway and p
