Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) remains a major cause of preventable childhood blindness, and oxygen therapy continues to represent a central but complex component of neonatal care. Current oxygen management is largely guided by static peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) target ranges, commonly around 90%-95%. However, target ranges alone may not fully capture the dynamic nature of oxygen exposure in preterm infants, including fluctuations, intermittent hypoxemia, hyperoxemic excursions, instability, and cumulative exposure over time. We propose the Dynamic Oxygen Stability and Exposure (DOSE

Background Supplemental oxygen therapy is an essential intervention for patients with respiratory insufficiency, but its prescription and documentation are often inconsistent. Oxygen is considered a drug, and improper prescribing or absent documentation can result in inadequate oxygen delivery, potentially leading to harmful effects. Despite national guidelines recommending target oxygen saturation ranges for patients, previous audits, such as the 2015 British Thoracic Society study, indicated significant gaps in oxygen prescription practices across hospitals. The aim of this audit was to asse

Given that both sludge ash and iron-based oxygen carriers (OCs) are rich in the active component Fe2O3, it is necessary to investigate whether there exists a synergistic effect that enhances oxygen transport and stabilizes OCs. This work focuses on lattice oxygen release characteristics and reduction kinetics of industrially prepared CaMn0.5Fe0.5O3-δ perovskite OCs (POC), sewage sludge ash (SSA), and their 1:1 mixture (POC/SSA) using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) via varying hydrogen concentrations (5-25 %) and terminal temperatures (800-900 °C). The results reveal that the presence of SSA

The oxygenation of aliphatic C-H bonds is a crucial transformation in synthetic chemistry, as it transforms ubiquitous alkane feedstocks into valuable ketones and alcohols. However, achieving this transformation selectively remains a formidable hurdle since the inherent inertness of C-H bonds hinders their activation, while the subtle differences in bond dissociation energies among various sites make achieving high regioselectivity difficult. Herein, we present an electrophotochemical δ-C(sp3)-H oxygenation of N-alkylsulfonamides enabled by an intramolecular guidance strategy using water as th

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Preprocedural oxygenation (pre-emptive oxygenation started during presedation and/or induction) and procedural oxygenation (pre-emptive oxygenation started during any phase of sedation) are easy-to-use strategies with potential to decrease adverse events. Here, we describe practice patterns of preprocedural oxygenation and procedural oxygenation. We hypothesized that patients who received preprocedural oxygenation or procedural oxygenation would have a lower risk of airway/breathing/circulation interventions during sedation compared with patients without procedural oxygenation

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was uncertain and the outcomes of ECMO-treated patients were unfavorable. During the pandemic, medical community realized that carefully selected patients may benefit from ECMO support. The goal of the study was to present the outcomes of ECMO-treated patients with severe COVID-19 ARDS referred to the respiratory ECMO hub in Croatia and to determine variables that influenced the outcome. Our study included all adult patients with confirmed COVID-19 ARDS that required ECMO treatment, in the period

Modifying the surface of a catalyst with heteroatoms can regulate the interfacial atomic valence state and adjust the charge distribution, which is promising for obtaining desirable platinum carbon catalyst (Pt/C)-matched oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic performance. Here, we developed an efficient method to access O-rich crystalline interfacial-exposed palladium-tin alloy (111) crystal surfaces [Pd3Sn (111)] for highly efficient ORR via direct reduction of Pd/Sn metal salt species that are well dispersed in a nitrogen, phosphorus-doped carbonaceous (NPC) substrate. BACKGROUND: Patients with fibromyalgia (FM) exhibit low peak oxygen uptake ([Formula: see text]O2peak). We aimed to detect the contribution of cardiac output to ([Formula: see text]) and arteriovenous oxygen difference [Formula: see text] to [Formula: see text] from rest to peak exercise in patients with FM.
METHODS: Thirty-five women with FM, aged 23 to 65 years, and 23 healthy controls performed a step incremental cycle ergometer test until volitional fatigue. Alveolar gas exchange and pulmonary ventilation were measured breath-by-breath and adjusted for fat-free body mass (FFM) where appro

Myoglobin (Mb)-mediated oxygen (O2) delivery and dissolved O2 in the cytosol are two major sources that support oxidative phosphorylation. During intense exercise, lactate (LAC) production is elevated in skeletal muscles as a consequence of insufficient intracellular O2 supply. The latter results in diminished mitochondrial oxidative metabolism and an increased reliance on nonoxidative pathways to generate ATP. Whether or not metabolites from these pathways impact Mb-O2 associations remains to be established. In the present study, we employed isothermal titration calorimetry, O2 kinetic studie

INTRODUCTION: Oxygenator exchange during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-threatening procedure. D-dimer has been used to predict oxygenator failure, but it is a parameter used a few days before oxygenator exchange. This study investigated parameters before and immediately after ECMO initiation that predict oxygenator exchange.
METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective study of 28 patients who received veno-venous ECMO with heparin/silicone-coated polypropylene oxygenator (NSH-R HPO-23WH-C; Senko Medical Inc., Tokyo, Japan), due to acute respiratory failure, from Ap

The multiphase cobalt-iron spinel was firstly synthesized via a facile cold plasma method and applied as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Compared with the single-phase obtained by the traditional calcination method, the CoFe2O4 and Co3O4 phase were obtained by the plasma method. The multivalence states of cobalt and iron facilitated electron transport in electrochemical reactions. The plasma sample had a small particle size (5 nm) due to the low operation temperature. Notably, electron impact produced more oxygen vacan

INTRODUCTION: Early oxygen debt repayment is predictive of successful weaning from veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO). However, studies are limited by the patient cohort's heterogeneity. This study aimed to understand the early state of oxygen debt repayment and its association with end-organ failure and 30-day survival using cluster analysis.
METHODS: A retrospective, single-center study was conducted on 153V-A ECMO patients. Patients were clustered using a two-step cluster analysis based on oxygen debt and its repayment during the first 24 h of ECMO. Primary outcom

Mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) is an important variable in anesthesia and intensive care but currently requires pulmonary artery catheterization. Recently, non-invasive determination of SvO2 (Capno-SvO2) using capnodynamics has shown good agreement against CO-oximetry in an animal model of modest hemodynamic changes. The purpose of the current study was to validate Capno-SvO2 against CO-oximetry during major alterations in oxygen delivery. Furthermore, evaluating fiberoptic SvO2 for its response to the same challenges. Eleven mechanically ventilated pigs were exposed to oxygen delivery

Using a new method for measuring the molecular ratio (R) of inhalation to exhalation, we investigated the effect of high fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO2) on oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide generation (VCO2), and respiratory quotient (RQ) in mechanically ventilated rats. Twelve rats were equally assigned into two groups by anesthetics: intravenous midazolam/fentanyl vs. inhaled isoflurane. R, VO2, VCO2, and RQ were measured at FIO2 0.3 or 1.0. R error was ± 0.003. R was 1.0099 ± 0.0023 with isoflurane and 1.0074 ± 0.0018 with midazolam/fentanyl. R was 1.0081 ± 0.0017 at an FIO2 of 0.

Breathing less than 50 kPa of oxygen over time can lead to pulmonary oxygen toxicity (POT). Vital capacity (VC) as the sole parameter for POT has its limitations. In this study we try to find out the changes of acid-base status in a POT rat model. Fifty male rats were randomly divided into five groups, exposed to 230 kPa oxygen for three, six, nine and 12 hours, respectively. Rats exposed to air were used as controls. After exposure the mortality and behavior of rats were observed. Arterial blood samples were collected for acid-base status detection and wet-dry (W/D) ratios of lung tissues wer

PURPOSE: To demonstrate a noncontact device to enrich oxygen concentration during corneal cross-linking (CXL).
METHODS: An oxygen delivery device was tested in a laboratory mock-up. The device comprises a clear polycarbonate tube of 14 cm in length and 1.58 cm inner diameter. Compressed oxygen gas is delivered to the tube from a side opening. The oximeter was attached to a sampling tube 3 mm above the apex of a scleral lens that simulates the cornea. The lens was mounted on a mannequin face. During each experimental run, the oximeter reading was recorded manually every 30 seconds for 4.5 minu

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed significant strain on the oxygen delivery infrastructure of health facilities in resource-constrained health systems. In this case report, we describe a patient with severe COVID-19 pneumonia who was managed with high-flow nasal oxygen for 40 days, with an eventual successful outcome. We discuss the oxygen delivery infrastructure needed to offer this intervention, as well as the psychosocial impact on those undergoing treatment.

While normal oxygen saturation is commonly thought to be a marker of normal oxygenation, cutaneous saturation does not account for the sufficiency of oxygen within each cell or that of the system overall. Rather, cutaneous oximetry simply defines the saturation of haemoglobin (Hb) with oxygen in a pulsatile vessel. Assessment of sufficiency is best determined by measurement of the amount of oxygen left over following aerobic respiration. This left over oxygen is 'stored' on Hb in the venous compartment and can be calculated as the venous oxygen content. We hypothesize that the development of a
