Acrodermatitis continua of Hallopeau (ACH) is a rare acropustular eruption, characterized by sterile pustules, paronychia and atrophic skin changes, onychodystrophy and osteolysis of the distal phalanges of the fingers and toes. It is considered to be a variant of pustular psoriasis with a chronic relapsing course and frequent refractoriness to many therapeutic modalities, which can be amenable to successful treatment by tumor necrosis factor alpha antagonists. We report 1 patient with pustular psoriasis and ACH whom we have treated successfully with etanercept (for 30 months) and then adalimu…

The main problems on the hands were hyperkeratosis (26.4%), nail dystrophy (15.2%) and paronychia (8.8%). Common feet dermatoses included nail dystrophy (57.1%), pitted keratolysis (42.5%) and fissuring (23.5%). Common aerobic and anaerobic bacteria isolated from pitted keratolysis and intertrigo were Klebsiella and Clostridium species. Aspergil …

Subungual squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare malignant tumor with an indolent course. Its etiology is unknown. It often involves the distal phalanx of the thumb or the index finger, and often presents as a chronic ulcer that is commonly misdiagnosed as chronic paronychia, pyogenic granuloma or verruca vulgaris. Approximately 150 cases of subungual SCC, including one in a Taiwanese patient, have been reported. Here, we report two cases of subungual SCC presenting as a chronic ulcer of the nail bed refractory to antibiotic treatment. One case involved the right thumb, while the other involv…

A total of 4,294 clinically suspected cases of dermatomycoses belonging to 26 different nationalities were examined between April 1984 and April 1988. Fungi were demonstrated in routine potassium hydroxide/dimethyl sulfoxide mount in 3,814 cases (88.8%) and the etiology was determined by culture in 2,458 cases (57.2%). Tinea versicolor was the predominant fungal infection (30.9% of all infections). Onychomycosis and paronychia ranked second in prevalence (16.8%). Candidal onychomycosis was the most common type of infection. Scalp ringworm among children ranked third (15.3%), Microsporum canis …

A 2-year-old, male neutered, domestic semi-long-haired cat was presented with a 1.5-year history of progressive, initially nonpruritic alopecia and malodorous greasy exudate affecting the distal extremities, trunk and neck but sparing the head and tail. The extensive alopecia and 'seborrhoea' were associated with severe thickening of the skin and fold formation on the dorsal head and distal extremities as well as the lateral thorax and abdomen. The hair was easily epilated, numerous milia were seen on the ventral abdomen and the caudal and lateral thighs, and mild paronychia was present. Histo…

Bart syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by localized absence of skin, epidermolysis bullosa (EB), and nail abnormalities. We report the case of a female newborn presenting with congenital absence of skin on both feet, associated to multiple blisters in friction-prone areas and paronychia. Despite these findings, she remained clinically stable, was feeding normally, and exhibited no gastrointestinal symptoms. Based on the association of aplasia cutis and epidermolysis bullosa, a diagnosis of Bart syndrome was clinically suspected. The patient was treated with topical gentamici…

Fungal biofilms have been involved in the pathogenesis of onychomycosis, but the aspects contributing to this association need to be enlight … omatology of onychomycosis. When it is caused by a non-dermatophyte, it usually is accompanied with paronychia, pain, oedema, inflammation and few signals of keratolysis, while dermatophytes are more associated with intense onycholysis and absence of the inflammatory signals. Biofilm seems to be crucial for non-dermatophytes to cause onychomycosis, but not f …

Skin involvement may occur in patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (polyangiitis with granulomatosis; WG) and is more frequent in the generalised form. However, when a patient with vasculitis develops digital ulceration, in addition to disease activation, other pathologies should be considered. One of them may be the herpetic whitlow mimicking paronychia. Here, we present a patient who developed herpetic whitlow during the course of immunosuppressive therapy due to WG. Just before the third course of cyclophosphamide therapy, she was re-admitted to the outpatient clinic with the above-mentio…

BACKGROUND: Alterations in fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) signaling are present in many malignancies, including urothelial carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, and gastrointestinal cancers, and FGFR inhibitors (FGFRi) play an increasing role in the treatment of these malignancies. Nail toxicities, such as onycholysis, paronychia, and nail fragility are an important part of the adverse effect profile of FGFRi that remain underrecognized and poorly characterized.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review using PubMed and Google through March 2025, including case reports, trials, …

A case of Bowen disease (BD) presenting as longitudinal melanonychia (LM) on the right third fingernail of a 25-year-old African American man is described. Findings from the histopathologic examination revealed full-thickness epidermal atypia, hypergranulosis, and koilocytic changes. Human papillomavirus (HPV) type 56 was identified by polymerase chain reaction. To the best of our knowledge, we describe the first case of BD of the nail unit in which HPV-56 DNA has been identified.
