An 81-year-old man was admitted for general fatigue of one month's duration. Two sets of blood cultures revealed bacteremia, due to Pasteurella multocida, while computed tomography (CT) revealed a 47-mm descending aortic saccular aneurysm. After transfer to our hospital, the saccular aneurysm rapidly grew to 54 mm. An emergency thoracic endovascular aortic repair was performed, due to the aneurysm immediately rupturing after the CT scan. The patient was discharged on postoperative day 28.

BACKGROUND: P. multocida (Pasteurella multocida) is animal-sourced gram-negative coccobacillus which can be transmitted to human through many animals including household pets. P. multocida induced peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis has rarely been reported. In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of P. multocida induced peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis, for the reason that patients with PD at home bred household pets. In this study, we present a case of a P. multocida induced peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis, which is suspected to be caused through intim…

A 58-year-old male with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis cirrhosis presents with right lower extremity cellulitis, abdominal tenderness, and severe sepsis after sustaining puncture injury from a cactus on a property with feral cats. Blood cultures and diagnostic paracentesis were consistent with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis due to Pasteurella multocida, a gram-negative coccobacillus found in the respiratory tract of domestic animals. The patient received timely antibiotic coverage with resolution of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and sepsis after 14-day treatment. This case emphasizes the …

Pasteurella multocida can cause serious infections after dog or cat bite. We report here a rare case of hand infection caused by P. multocida consecutive to an injury by a thorn of the prickly pear. It caused an amputation of the distal phalanx of the thumb in a trisomic patient. It is about a 27-year-old man who was admitted to the hospital with swelling and intense pain of the left hand. He reported a sting by a thorn of prickly pear 15 days before. The patient was admitted to proceed with operative irrigation and debridement. The pus was collected for microbiological examination. Microscopi…

The antimicrobial properties of tulathromycin were investigated for M. haemolytica and P. multocida. Three in vitro indices of antimicrobial activity, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and time-kill curves, were established for six isolates of each organism. Each index was measured in two growth media: Mueller-Hinton broth (MHB) and calf serum. It was shown that MICs and MBCs were markedly lower in serum than in MHB. MHB:serum ratios for MIC were 47:1 (M. haemolytica) and 53:1 (P. multocida). For both serum and MHB, adjustment of pH led to greater

Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen causing economically important diseases in distinct animal species. Complete genome sequences of five P. multocida strains (Pm70, HB03, HN06, 3480, and 36950) isolated from poultry, swine or bovine, were retrieved from the GenBank database and compared with each other, for the first time. The missense mutations generating a dissimilar amino acid in the peptide chain, nonsense mutations, and insertion/deletions in the nucleotide sequence were identified due to the potential change in the protein function. A total of 500 putative mutant…

A 5-yr retrospective study (November 2006-December 2011) was conducted to determine the isolation frequency of Pasteurella multocida and Gallibacterium anatis and their antibiograms from chickens submitted to the Mississippi Poultry Research and Diagnostic Laboratory. The number of isolations of G. anatis increased over the last 5 yr in broiler and broiler breeder type chickens. For P. multocida, the number of isolations increased from 2006 to 2010, but decreased through 2011 with all isolations being from boiler breeder type chickens. Gallibacterium anatis demonstrated almost complete resista…

P. multocida is the causative agent of a wide range of diseases of animals, including fowl cholera in poultry and wild birds. Fowl cholera isolates of P. multocida generally express a capsular polysaccharide composed of hyaluronic acid. There have been reports of spontaneous capsule loss in P. multocida, but the mechanism by which this occurs has not been determined. In this study, we identified three independent strains that had spontaneously lost the ability to produce capsular polysaccharide. Quantitative RT-PCR showed that these strains had significantly reduced transcription of the capsul

Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of fowl cholera in domesticated and wild birds. The disease outcome is affected by various host- and pathogen-specific determinants. Several putative virulence factors have been proposed to play a key role in this interaction, including the ptfA gene, the products of which assemble to form type 4 fimbriae on the bacterial surface. One way to understand more precisely how ptfA contributes to pathogenesis is to gather molecular features of this gene in circulating avian P. multocida strains. Therefore, molecular characterization of the ptfA gene of P.…

A total of 100 isolates of Pasteurella multocida from various ruminant species (cattle, buffalo and sheep) belonging to different parts of country were identified using Pasteurella multocida-PCR (PM-PCR) and capsular PCR assays. PM-PCR revealed an amplicon of approximately 460 bp in all the isolates tested. As regards capsular PCR, 36 of 38 cattle isolates and 30 of 34 buffalo isolates were found to belong to capsular serogroup B whereas rest of the cattle and buffalo isolates belonged to serogroup A of P. multocida. In case of sheep, a total of 26 out of 28 isolates were positive for serogrou…

Bacterial protein toxins are powerful tools for elucidating signaling mechanisms in eukaryotic cells. A number of bacterial protein toxins, e.g. cholera toxin, pertussis toxin (PTx), or Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT), target heterotrimeric G proteins and have been used to stimulate or block specific signaling pathways or to demonstrate the contribution of their target proteins in cellular effects. PMT is a major virulence factor of P. multocida causing pasteurellosis in man and animals and is responsible for atrophic rhinitis in pigs. PMT modulates various signaling pathways, including phos…

A 58-year-old woman presented with progressive midforehead swelling and erythema with frontal headache. Investigations revealed erosion of the anterior wall of the frontal sinus with subgaleal abscess formation, establishing a diagnosis of Pott's puffy tumour. Pasteurella multocida was isolated in pure growth from an aspirate of the abscess. P multocida is a rare cause of sinusitis. It is isolated from the respiratory tract of asymptomatic individuals and, more commonly, patients with chronic respiratory conditions. Although a cause of osteomyelitis associated with animal bites or scratches, P…

Purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Pasteurella multocida type 6:B, while toxic at higher doses, was protective at lower dose levels against experimentally-induced pasteurellosis in mice. However, the observed protection was abrogated if such LPS was digested with proteinase K prior to use in immunisation. The O-antigen polysaccharide side-chain (OS) of LPS did not appear to contribute to the observed protection as judged by the fact that immunisation of mice with purified OS or OS-protein conjugates, all of which were nontoxic, failed to confer protection against challenge with homologous vi…

The pharmacokinetics of sulfadimidine (SDM) and its N4-acetyl metabolite (N4SDM) were investigated after intravenous bolus injection of a single dose (200 mg/kg) of SDM in normal and diseased New Zealand white rabbits. The apparent distribution volume at steady state, total body clearance and elimination half-life of SDM in normal animals were 0.7 +/- 0.3 l/kg, 0.57 +/- 0.24 l/kg/h and 1.6 +/- 1.3 h, respectively. Of the administered dose, 62.1% was metabolized by N4-acetylation, and 12.7 +/- 1.1 and 2.8 +/- 1.8% of the dose was excreted as free drug by the kidney and gastrointestinal tract, r

Gross and microscopic lesions of pasteurellosis were studied in control and immunized pasteurella-free rabbits after challenge with virulent Pasteurella multocida. Pathologic responses were compared in rabbits immunized intravenously or mucosally with P. multocida or with J5, a cross protective core LPS mutant of E. coli. All rabbits were challenged conjunctivally with approximately 2xLD50 of P. multocida. Rabbits were necropsied and examined for histopathology of the respiratory tract and kidneys. Lung lesions varied in severity depending on the duration of the disease, the route of vaccinati…

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) infection can induce severe pulmonary lesions in goats. However, little is known about the cellular changes in goat lungs caused by P. multocida. This exploratory study employs single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) to systematically map the dynamic cellular landscape of caprine lung tissue during P. multocida infection. We analyzed 37,847 high-quality nuclei from control and seven days post-infection groups, and systematically annotated 12 major cell types. Immune cells (B cells, T cells and Macrophages) and serous cells underwent further reclustering. …
