Paternal Hostility and Maternal Hostility in European American and African American Families.

The authors examined the hypothesized influence of maternal and paternal hostility on youth delinquency over time. The investigation addressed significant gaps in earlier research on parental hostility, including the neglect of father effects, especially in African American families. Using prospective, longitudinal data from community samples of European American (n = 422) and African American (n = 272) 2-parent families, the authors examined the independent effects of paternal and maternal hostility on youth delinquency. The results indicated that paternal hostility significantly predicted re

Epigenetic inheritance of paternally expressed imprinted genes in the testes of ICSI mice.

Worse reproductive health in the men born through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) or other assisted reproductive techniques (ART) has been reported in many studies. However, owing to the interference of genetic and environmental factors, it is difficult to identify whether ICSI method would affect male reproductive health. Therefore, ART mouse models were established in this study. Besides semen quality, serum testosterone and histological analysis of testes, 6 paternally expressed imprinted genes were chosen to detect their expressions and methylation levels in testes of adult F1 and

Perceived economic strain exacerbates the effect of paternal depressed mood on hostility.

Depression in fathers has been associated with impaired parenting, which, in turn, may function as a central environmental mechanism underlying the adverse effects of paternal depression on children's development. Despite this, evidence suggests that many depressed fathers are able to maintain positive relationships with their children, and little is known about factors associated with better or worse parenting outcomes when fathers experience depression. Using two waves of prospective, longitudinal data from a community sample of fathers and their high school-aged adolescent offspring (N = 32

Differentially methylated regions in maternal and paternal uniparental disomy for chromosome 7.

DNA methylation is a hallmark of genomic imprinting and differentially methylated regions (DMRs) are found near and in imprinted genes. Imprinted genes are expressed only from the maternal or paternal allele and their normal balance can be disrupted by uniparental disomy (UPD), the inheritance of both chromosomes of a chromosome pair exclusively from only either the mother or the father. Maternal UPD for chromosome 7 (matUPD7) results in Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) with typical features and growth retardation, but no gene has been conclusively implicated in SRS. In order to identify novel DM

Paternal treatment with cisplatin impairs reproduction of adult male offspring in rats.

This study evaluated the acute and persistent effects of paternal cisplatin-treatment on progeny. Wistar male rats (45 days old) were assigned into 2 groups. Control and cisplatin (CP: 1mg/kg-d, 5 days/week, for 3 weeks, ip.). Male rats at 66 (end of treatment, acute effects evaluation) and 140 days old (after recovery period, persistent effects evaluation) were mated with females. Fetal and post-natal developments of the offspring sired by treated-male mated in both ages were evaluated, including fertility of adult male offspring. No adverse effects in fetal development or puberty onset were

Idiopathic recurrent pregnancy loss: role of paternal factors; a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: This case-control study was designed with the aim of evaluating the role of sperm, oxidative stress and DNA damage in idiopathic recurrent pregnancy loss (iRPL). This pilot study is the first study done on the Indian population which reports the association between DFI, TAC and ROS in couples experiencing iRSA. METHODS: Twenty infertile men with a history of iRPL and 20 fertile controls (having fathered a child a year earlier) were included in the study which was performed in Laboratory for Molecular Reproduction and Genetics, India, from March 2010 to July 2011. The female partne

[The joys and burdens within clinical genetics--paternal discrepancy causes dilemmas].

We present three cases, a 25-year-old woman, a 52-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman, in whom paternal discrepancy (PD) adversely influenced genetic counselling. PD, with an estimated prevalence between 2% and 3%, occurs when a child is identified as being biologically fathered by someone other than the man who believes he is the father. The discovery of PD during genetic testing can cause health problems and psychosocial damage, and can increase costs, as illustrated by our three cases. Opinions vary about whether or not to disclose this sensitive information, and we recommend being as stra

Distal trisomy of 10q with distal monosomy of 15q due to a paternal translocation.

Distal trisomy of 10q is a rare chromosomal abnormality. Distal deletions of the terminal long arm of chromosome 15 have rarely been described. We report on a male infant with low birth weight and microcephaly, a flat face with a spacious forehead, low-set ears, blepharophimosis, microphthalmia, a small nose, and a depressed nasal bridge. Microarray comparative genomic hybridization identified that he had the karyotype 46, XY, der (15) t (10;15) (q25.2;q26.2) pat, with chromosomal breakpoints at 10q25.2 and 15q26.2. This male neonatal case had an unbalanced translocation inherited from his fat

"You can't handle the truth"; medical paternalism and prenatal alcohol use.

The publication of the latest contribution to the alcohol-in-pregnancy debate, and the now customary flurry of media attention it generated, have precipitated the renewal of a series of ongoing debates about safe levels of consumption and responsible prenatal conduct. The University College London (UCL) study's finding that low levels of alcohol did not contribute to adverse behavioural outcomes-and may indeed have made a positive contribution in some cases-is unlikely to be the last word on the subject. Proving a negative correlation is notoriously difficult (technically, impossible), and oth

Acute paternal alcohol use affects offspring development and adult behavior.

Swiss Webster pups were fathered by sires given either an acute dose of alcohol (alcohol-sired) or saline (saline-sired) 12-24 h before mating. The same sires were used to father both groups of pups. Alcohol-sired pups were significantly lighter at birth and for the following three weeks than were saline-sired pups. Significantly more pups were fathered by saline-exposed sires, and dams carrying those pups had significantly longer gestations than those carrying pups of alcohol-using sires. More runts were born to the alcohol-sired group, and more pups in that group died over the next three wee

Childhood cancer and social contact: the role of paternal occupation (United Kingdom).

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between childhood cancer (particularly leukaemia) and paternal occupational social contact (a proxy for potential exposure to infections) using the UK Childhood Cancer Study. METHODS: Using a national population-based case-control study, self-reported occupational data from fathers of 3596 children diagnosed with cancer between 1991 and 1996 under 15 years of age (cases) and fathers of 7011 children without cancer (controls) were analysed. Associations were assessed using odds ratios (OR) calculated by time of exposure (birth, diagnosis), diagnostic

A paternally derived inverted duplication of distal 14q with a terminal 14q deletion.

A girl presented with a phenotype including neonatal hypotonia, psychomotor retardation, mental retardation, short stature, and facial dysmorphism. She demonstrated common features of both 14q31-qter duplication and terminal 14q deletion. She had undergone surgery for patent ductus arteriosus and pyloric stenosis in infancy. Her karyotype was 46,XX,der(14) dup(14)(q32.3 q31.3)del(14)(q32.3). Molecular cytogenetic analysis showed a paternally derived 14q31.3-q32.3 duplication and a terminal 14q deletion and led to the correlations between a particular genotype and phenotype. This is the first d

Paternal organic solvent exposure and adverse pregnancy outcomes: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Organic solvents are widely used, but conflicting reports exist concerning paternal exposure and adverse pregnancy outcomes. We conducted a meta-analysis to assess the risks of spontaneous abortions (SAs) and major malformations (MMs) after paternal exposure to organic solvents. METHODS: Medline, Toxline, Reprotox, and Embase from 1966 to 2003 were searched. Two independent reviewers searched for cohort and case-control studies in any language on adult human males exposed chronically to any organic solvent. Two non-blinded independent extractors used a standardized form for data e

[The paternal origin of an extra chromosome 13 from the patient with patau syndrome.].

A boy was born at 38 week's gestation by Cesarean delivery . Affected newborn was characteristically bilateral cleft lip and severe cleft palate. The sternum was malformation. The sacrospinal bifida and the talipes varus were found and the testes were not descended. The boy died after delivery within 10 minutes owing to respiratory failure. Cytogenetic analysis of his peripheral lymphocyte by G banding showed a karyotype 47,XY,+13 , which was also confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The locus D13S317 was detected by the peripheral blood from the boy and the parents. Three a

Effects of paternal heat stress on the in vivo development of preimplantation embryos in the mouse.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of paternal heat stress on the in vivo development of preimplantation embryos in the mouse. Synchronised B6CBF1 female mice were mated either to a control male mouse or to one that had been exposed at 7, 21 or 35 days previously, for 24 h to an ambient temperature of 36+/-0.3 degrees C and 66+/-5.6% relative humidity. Embryos were collected from the oviducts of mice at 14-16 h, 34-39 h or 61-65 h after mating or from the uterus at 85-90 h after mating and their developmental status was evaluated morphologically. The number of cells within b

Paternal imprinting of the SLC22A1LS gene located in the human chromosome segment 11p15.5.

BACKGROUND: Genomic imprinting is an epigenetic chromosomal modification in the gametes or zygotes that results in a non-random monoallelic expression of specific autosomal genes depending upon their parent of origin. Approximately 44 human genes have been reported to be imprinted. A majority of them are clustered, including some on chromosome segment 11p15.5. We report here the imprinting status of the SLC22A1LS gene from the human chromosome segment 11p15.5 RESULTS: In order to test for allele specific expression patterns, PCR primer sets from the SLC22A1LS gene were used to look for hetero

Paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 14: confirmation of a clinically-recognizable phenotype.

We report on a girl with a dicentric chromosome 14 [45,XX,inv(9)(p11q13),dic(14;14)(p11.1;p11.1)] with paternal uniparental disomy (UPD) for chromosome 14. Clinical findings include severe hypotonia, thoracic dystrophy, diastasis recti, swallowing difficulties with aspiration, developmental delay, and multiple minor anomalies. UPD for chromosome 14 has been documented with paternal UPD much less commonly than with maternal UPD. There have been ten cases of paternal UPD for chromosome 14 and one case of segmental paternal isodisomy of chromosome 14. Many of the findings are nonspecific, but the

Lack of paternal inheritance of muscle mitochondrial DNA in sporadic mitochondrial myopathies.

In 2002, paternal inheritance of muscle mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was reported in a patient with exercise intolerance and a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutation restricted to skeletal muscle. To evaluate whether paternal inheritance is a common phenomenon, we studied 10 sporadic patients with skeletal muscle-restricted mtDNA mutations: five harbored mtDNA point mutations in protein-coding genes and five had single mtDNA deletions. We performed haplotype analysis and direct sequencing of the hypervariable regions 1 and 2 of the D-loop in muscle and blood from the patients and, when available, in
