Assessment of physical performance and muscle function in hemodialysis patients participating in an exercise regimen: A cluster-randomized, single-center study.

BACKGROUND: Many studies reported positive effects of physical exercise on the condition of dialysis patients. The insufficient value of those changes makes it difficult to interpret their clinical relevance. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the influence of selected training (endurance, resistance, tai chi) on cardiopulmonary fitness and muscle function, as well as to analyze the factors having the most significant effect on cardiopulmonary fitness in a group of dialysis patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ninety-eight patients agreed to participate in the study. Selection of the type of

Factors associated with participation in a proton therapy clinical trial: a cross-sectional survey of Danish patients with head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Participation in proton therapy (PT) trials may be affected by structural, clinical, and individual factors, potentially excluding certain patient groups. Such disparities can lead to unequal access to potential research benefits and may limit the generalisability of trial findings. This study aimed to identify factors associated with participation in a Danish randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing proton versus photon radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This national cross-sectional study invited patients with pharyngeal and laryngeal can

The Relationship Between Health-Related Quality of Life and Frailty in Older Patients Participating in Early Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a significant prognostic risk factor for cardiovascular disease and it can lead to poor quality of life due to malnutrition, fatigue, and reduced physical activity. However, few studies have investigated how frailty affects older patients participating in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). METHODS AND RESULTS: Between November 2015 and December 2016 at Juntendo University Hospital, 217 patients (mean age 74.6±5.8 years; males 67%) participated in CR. Patients completed self-evaluations using the 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36) and t

Bioavailability of a novel sustained-release pellet formulation of 5-flucytosine in healthy-fed participants for use in patients with cryptococcal meningitis.

Cryptococcal meningoencephalitis (CM) is an opportunistic fungal infection and a major cause of death among people living with human immunodeficiency virus in sub-Saharan Africa. 5-flucytosine (5-FC) is a unique, brain-permeable antifungal agent used to reduce mortality from CM and to prevent disease in individuals carrying cryptococcal antigen. 5-FC has a short plasma half-life, requiring 6-hourly oral dosing with an immediate-release (IR) formulation, a significant challenge in hospital and outpatient settings, risking a lack of compliance. We recently reported the relative bioavailability i

Relationship between health literacy and physical function of patients participating in phase I cardiac rehabilitation: a multicenter clinical study.

Health literacy (HL) is an important decision factor for health. Both low HL and low physical function cause adverse events in cardiovascular disease patients, but their relationship is not well documented. To clarify the relationship between HL and physical function of patients participating in cardiac rehabilitation and calculate the cutoff value of the 14-item HL scale (HLS) for low handgrip strength, this multicenter clinical study named the Kobe-Cardiac Rehabilitation project for people around the World (K-CREW) was conducted among four affiliated hospitals with patients who underwent car

The Accuracy of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Algorithm for Screening to Detect Major Depression: An Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Screening for major depression with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) can be done using a cutoff or the PHQ-9 diagnostic algorithm. Many primary studies publish results for only one approach, and previous meta-analyses of the algorithm approach included only a subset of primary studies that collected data and could have published results. OBJECTIVE: To use an individual participant data meta-analysis to evaluate the accuracy of two PHQ-9 diagnostic algorithms for detecting major depression and compare accuracy between the algorithms and the standard PHQ-9 cutoff score of
