Peer-led active tuberculosis case-finding among people living with HIV: lessons from Nepal.

PROBLEM: People living with a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have a high risk of tuberculosis and should undergo regular screening. However, they can be difficult to reach because they are stigmatized and discriminated against. APPROACH: In Nepal, the nongovernmental organization Naya Goreto implemented a peer-led tuberculosis screening project in which people living with HIV volunteered to contact others in this high-risk population. Volunteers took part in a short training course, after which they attempted to contact people living with HIV through existing networks and self-h

Parents of children with rheumatic disease as peer counselors.

OBJECTIVE: A parent consultant program was established to promote active family involvement in the health care process and to provide parent-to-parent support, education, and training. METHODS: Parents of children with rheumatic disease were hired by 7 pediatric rheumatology centers to serve as role models and advocates for other parents whose children attended the clinics. In the clinic, the parent consultants provided support, advocacy, and education regarding specific nonmedical issues. At the local level, they assisted parents in obtaining community-based services, such as individual educ

Evaluations of bias-based bullying of immigrant peers: A brief report on the intersection between teachers and students' social identities.

Positive school climate and teacher-student relationships are important facilitators of inclusive intergroup dynamics and anti-victimization behavior. The current study investigated how students' evaluations of bias-based bullying toward im/migrant background peers were related to their perceptions of teachers' acceptance of students and teachers' responses to bullying. Students in the northeastern United States (n = 808; Mage = 13.90 [2.07]; cisgender girls [48.3%]/boys; immigrant-background [63.0%]/nonimmigrant background; racially minoritized [49.2%]/nonminoritized) evaluated vignettes of W

The feasibility of the COMMUNICATE toolkit to support the communication of physical activity messages with adolescents in Irish schools.

The Active School Flag (ASF) is a peer-led whole-of-school physical activity (PA) programme in Irish secondary schools. This study assessed the feasibility of implementing the COMMUNICATE toolkit for ASF programme implementers (peer leaders and coordinating teachers). A pre-post, quasi-experimental, mixed-methods design was employed and guided by the Orsmond and Cohn feasibility objectives. Online surveys, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups were collected from six secondary schools (40% recruitment rate), 170 peer leaders, and three coordinating teachers. Survey data were analysed us

Exploring the evolution of US medical students' social support networks across the continuum: a cross-sectional group interview study.

Perceived social support - feeling cared for and having access to a reliable network - has been linked to reduced stress and burnout, and greater quality of life among medical students. Yet, how perceived support systems evolve throughout medical school remains little explored. We examined how medical students' perceived social support systems shift during medical school adaptively to students' changing academic and emotional needs. Between January and May 2023, we conducted six hour-long group interviews with a cross-sectional convenience sample of 50 medical students (graduating Classes of 2

Promoting Cross-Racial and Ethnic Friendships in Schools: Roles of School Diversity and Interracial Climate and Intersections with Immigrant Status.

Cross-racial/ethnic friendships are associated with positive outcomes related to social cohesion; however, attention to the specific school contextual factors that promote these friendships during adolescence and how such factors vary by adolescents' social positions is lacking. This study examined how school diversity and interracial climate were related to students' friendship diversity and whether these associations differed by immigrant status. The participants were from a diverse sample of 591 U.S. 9th graders who were approximately 14- to 15-year-old across 29 schools (10% Asian American

Racial and ethnic composition of peer recovery community members and barriers to acquiring funding for organizations in the ecosystem of recovery.

INTRODUCTION: Organizations in the "ecosystem of recovery"-most often non-profits led and staffed by individuals with lived substance use disorder (SUD) experience-offer peer services, group counseling, and a wide variety of programs to help those struggling with SUD. The efforts of such organizations are effective in transitioning those suffering from SUD into long-term recovery. Despite well-established evidence depicting inequitable access to SUD treatment between BIPOC and non-Hispanic White Americans, there has been no empirical undertaking of whether organizations in the ecosystem of rec

The influence of status on group drinking by young adults: a survey of natural drinking groups on their way to and from bars.

BACKGROUND: Young people's social standing among friends and peers has been linked to general levels of drinking and has been shown to influence others' drinking. We extend previous research by examining young adults' status within their natural-occurring drinking groups as a predictor of their subsequent alcohol consumption and encouragement of group members' alcohol consumption during a night out at licensed drinking establishments, a salient context for heavy drinking and alcohol-related risk among young adults. METHODS: We recruited same-sex young adult drinking groups (n = 104 groups; 63

A longitudinal study of adolescent adjustment following family transitions.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the impact of family transitions, that is, parental separation, divorce, remarriage and death, upon the lives of Australian children and adolescents in a longitudinal study of temperament and development. METHODS: Using longitudinal and concurrent questionnaire data, outcomes for young people experiencing transitions were compared with those of a random comparison group whose biological parents remained together. RESULTS: No significant group differences were found with regard to behavioural and emotional adjustment concurrently or across time, nor on academic

Can online peer influencers accelerate HIV testing among young adult males living in Nairobi, Kenya? A study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Kenya continues to experience persistent gender disparities in HIV testing. Young men remain substantially less likely than young women to test for HIV, despite expansion of facility based, community based, and HIV self testing services. Although WhatsApp based and peer led interventions have shown promise individually, it remains unclear whether adding online peer influencer engagement to standard HIV communication further increases HIV testing uptake. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether adding an online peer influencer led WhatsApp intervention to standard FM radio and WhatsApp HIV

Toward a Coordinated Global Response to Anabolic-Androgenic Steroid Consumption: Lessons From the World's Current Steroid Checking Initiatives.

Anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use presents a growing global public health issue. Despite evidence of significant physical, psychological and social harms, responses to non-medical AAS use remain fragmented, under-resourced and lacking in coordinated clinical and policy frameworks. This commentary synthesises emerging evidence and outlines priorities for developing a comprehensive harm reduction approach. Recent innovations in Australia and Switzerland have introduced steroid checking programs, where people who use AAS can anonymously submit products for chemical analysis. Findings from bot

Testing a social mechanism of recovery high schools: Peer affiliation as a mediator of substance use outcomes.

PURPOSE: Limited options for developmentally appropriate continuing care represent a critical barrier for youth in recovery. As one of the few options designed specifically for adolescents, recovery high schools (RHSs) warrant investigation to better understand their effects and the mechanisms through which they operate. This study examined the long-term effects of RHS attendance and tested whether peer-level social change operates as a mechanism. METHODS: Data were drawn from a longitudinal, group-design study of RHS effectiveness. Twelve-month follow-up substance use outcomes were compared

Giving a boost: a free near-peer advising program for medical school applicants.

PROBLEM: One often overlooked cost of the medical school application process is that associated with access to quality premedical advising, which enables applicants to hone their essays and interview skills. To help address this socioeconomic inequity, Giving a Boost (GAB) was created at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine to provide free near-peer application advising to medical school applicants. APPROACH: Launched in 2020, GAB pairs applicants with medical school mentors who have recently completed the application process (based on shared backgrounds and goals), helping to demy

Randomized Controlled Trial of a Peer-Delivered High School Preparatory Intervention for ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: The high school transition is a period of academic and socioemotional vulnerability for adolescents with ADHD. Standard high school interventions for ADHD typically demonstrate access and engagement challenges. Peer-delivered interventions may overcome staff time and resource shortages while increasing adolescent engagement. A previously tested peer-delivered model (STRIPES;16 weekly psychosocial sessions with a peer) showed promising effects but suboptimal engagement. METHOD: This development trial evaluates enhancements to STRIPES (STRIPES+) adding a 1-week peer-led school orient

Distressed or De-stressed? Crafting "Mental Health" in University Peer Education and Health Promotion.

In recent years, universities have demonstrated heightened recognition of and concern for students' mental health by expanding mental health services as well as campus-wide mental health promotion campaigns. This article examines peer education -- a growing initiative on American campuses in which students work with their institution to create and deliver health education and awareness campaigns to their peers. I present findings from an ethnographic study including 30 interviews with student peer health educators and their supervisory staff, participant observation among three university prog

The Effectiveness of Peer Support on Self-Management and Psychosocial Outcomes in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis frequently encounter a substantial psychosocial burden, yet conventional care frequently lacks the capacity to deliver comprehensive, sustained psychosocial support due to limitations in resources. Nurse-led peer support, which integrates professional expertise with the lived experience of peers, presents a promising complementary model; however, its consolidated efficacy in this population lacks rigorous synthesis. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of nurse-led peer support on self-mana

Dyslexia, School-Connectedness, Depression, and Anxiety During the Transition From Primary to Secondary School.

Children with dyslexia are at elevated risk of depression and anxiety. The transition from primary to secondary school may be particularly challenging given increased educational demands. Past research indicates school-connectedness may be a protective factor across this transition. We tested longitudinal relationships between dyslexia, school-connectedness, depression, and anxiety over the secondary school transition. Children (N = 208, Mage = 12.16, 58% girls, 61 with dyslexia) and their caregivers (95% mothers) completed standardised measures of school-connectedness, depression, and anxiety

Examining the Effect of Peer-Led Parenting Interventions on the Wellbeing of Parents With Children With an Emotional or Behavioural Disorder - A Systematic Review.

BackgroundParents of children with emotional or behavioural disorders (EBD) experience challenges with their own wellbeing. Parenting practices are impacted by parent wellbeing and are vital to supporting children with EBD. Programs with peer-led components, aimed at developing healthy parenting skills have been developed. While peer-led parenting interventions for parents of children with EBD have led to positive outcomes for children, outcomes related to parent wellbeing are not known. This systematic review examines the impact of peer-led parenting programs on the wellbeing of parents of ch
