Forces That Supplement Visuomotor Learning: A "Sensory Crossover" Experiment.

Previous studies on reaching movements have shown that people can adapt to either visuomotor (e.g., prism glasses) or mechanical distortions (e.g., force fields) through repetitive practice. Recent work has shown that adaptation to one type of distortion might have implications on learning the other type, suggesting that neural resources are common to both kinematic and kinetic adaptation. This study investigated whether training with a novel force field might benefit the learning of a visual distortion-specifically, when forces were designed to produce aftereffects that aligned with the ideal

Auditory sensitivity in aquatic animals.

A critical concern with respect to marine animal acoustics is the issue of hearing "sensitivity," as it is widely used as a criterion for the onset of noise-induced effects. Important aspects of research on sensitivity to sound by marine animals include: uncertainties regarding how well these species detect and respond to different sounds; the masking effects of man-made sounds on the detection of biologically important sounds; the question how internal state, motivation, context, and previous experience affect their behavioral responses; and the long-term and cumulative effects of sound expos

Impact of the motion and visual complexity of the background on players' performance in video game-like displays.

The visual interfaces of virtual environments such as video games often show scenes where objects are superimposed on a moving background. Three experiments were designed to better understand the impact of the complexity and/or overall motion of two types of visual backgrounds often used in video games on the detection and use of superimposed, stationary items. The impact of background complexity and motion was assessed during two typical video game tasks: a relatively complex visual search task and a classic, less demanding shooting task. Background motion impaired participants' performance o

Attention parameters in visual search tasks in different age groups.

Attention processes were studied using a model based on visual searches for a specified element in grids of size 3 x 3 and 7 x 7 cm displayed on a monitor screen. Five age groups took part in the experimental studies: children of five and seven years, a group of 15-year-old adolescents, a group aged 20-35 years, and a group aged over 60 years; a total of 62 subjects took part. Statistical analysis showed that the latter three groups were not different from each other and were used as an adult control group for comparison with results from children. Five types of search were used: one difficult

Perceived speed differences explain apparent compression in slit viewing.

When a figure moves behind a stationary narrow slit, observers often report seeing the figure as an integrated whole, a phenomenon known as slit viewing or anorthoscopic perception. Interestingly, in slit viewing, the figure is perceived compressed along the axis of motion, e.g., a circle is perceived as an ellipse. Underestimation of the speed of the moving object was offered as an explanation for this apparent compression. We measured perceived speed and compression in anorthoscopic perception and found results that are inconsistent with this hypothesis. We found evidence for an alternative

Letter binding and invariant recognition of masked words: behavioral and neuroimaging evidence.

Fluent readers recognize visual words across changes in case and retinal location, while maintaining a high sensitivity to the arrangement of letters. To evaluate the automaticity and functional anatomy of invariant word recognition, we measured brain activity during subliminal masked priming. By preceding target words with an unrelated prime, a repeated prime, or an anagram made of the same letters, we separated letter-level and whole-word codes. By changing the case and the retinal location of primes and targets, we evaluated the invariance of those codes. Our results indicate that an invari

Read my lips: asymmetries in the visual expression and perception of speech revealed through the McGurk effect.

It is well known that the right side of the mouth moves more than the left during speech, but little is known about how this asymmetry affects lipreading. We investigated asymmetries in the visual expression and perception of speech using the McGurk effect-an illusion in which incongruent lip movements cause listeners to misreport sounds. Thirty right-handed participants watched film clips in which the left, the right, or neither side of the mouth was covered. The McGurk effect was attenuated when the right side of the mouth was covered, demonstrating that this side is more important to liprea

The effects of click level, click rate, and level of background masking noise on the inferior colliculus potential (ICP) in the normal and carboplatin-treated chinchilla.

Carboplatin produces a selective loss of inner hair cells in chinchilla, substantially reducing the amplitude of the compound action potential. A key question that arises from these experiments is: What effect does a reduction in IHC-eighth-nerve fiber input have on the central auditory nervous system? This investigation evaluated the inferior colliculus potential (ICP) in chinchillas treated with carboplatin. The left ear was surgically destroyed and a recording electrode was placed in the left inferior colliculus. Following thirteen days of recovery time, the ICP was recorded in the awake an

The effects of contralateral noise on masked compound action potential in humans.

The effects of contralateral noise on the masked compound action potential (CAP) were examined in human subjects. Small but significant enhancements of masked CAP amplitude (anti-masking effects) were observed in some patients with facial palsy, as well as in some subjects with healthy ears when noise was added to the contralateral ear. There were no significant differences in fractional changes of CAP by the addition of contralateral noise between subjects with healthy ears and patients with facial palsy in which acoustic reflexes of middle ear muscles (MEMs) had disappeared or were impaired.

Behaviour of delayed evoked otoacoustic emission under forward masking paradigm.

The behaviour of delayed evoked otoacoustic emission (DEOAE) has been studied in normally hearing adults under a conventional forward-masking paradigm, and subjective measurements were carried out additionally for comparison. The clicks served as signals and the noise bursts were used as masker. In different experimental sets, signal and masker intensity, masker duration, and the interval between masker and maskee were altered. At masker levels corresponding to the subjective post-masking threshold of the clicks, the DEOAE was unaffected, i.e. had no noticeable alteration, compared with click

Evoked otoacoustic emission: behaviour under the forward masking paradigm.

The behaviour of evoked otoacoustic emission (EOAE) has been studied in normally hearing adults under the conventional forward masking paradigm. The clicks and tone pips served as signals, and the noise bursts were used as maskers. At noise burst levels, defined as psychoacoustic masking thresholds of signals (postmasking threshold), attenuation of EOAEs was just noticeable but did not occur in all records. The EOAEs were not completely eliminated even at noise levels exceeding the post-masking threshold by 30 dB. Central or neural and peripheral or receptor mechanisms are suggested to be the

[Diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss by ipsilateral masking of brain stem auditory evoked potentials].

The Authors show their original technique for the differential diagnosis of cochlear and retrocochlear hearing loss which employs ipsilateral masking of the A.B.R. in order to define the difference in V wave latency between a standard technique (clicks at 21 pps without noise) and a sensitized technique (clicks at 21 pps with noise at S/N of +40). This difference in latency has been named Sensitizing Latency Difference (SLD). Sixty normal subjects, 85 patients with cochlear hearing loss and 6 with retrocochlear hearing loss, were studied. The obtained data showed a SLD value: in normal hearing

The Chirp Train Streaming test. A clinical approach to auditory selectivity and listening.

Traditionally, the auditory system is considered as capable, primarily, of frequency and temporal analysis. We introduce a new test, the CTS test, using tone glides (chirps), which takes into account the ability of the auditory system to form perceptual streams. Based on Békésy tracking, the test gives an auditory selectivity index, the streaming index or STIN. The STIN value together with the tracking pattern provide insight into the nature and cause of the patient's listening problems. In this paper, we use the STIN to develop a working hypothesis about the role of middle-ear silent mucosal

Psychoacoustical tuning curves in audiology.

The correlation between classic masking patterns and psychoacoustical tuning curves is discussed quantitatively. A simplified method to measure such tuning curves in clinical use is described. They are shown to be insensitive to the frequency dependence of the hearing loss. Tuning curve data of six different groups including normal and hard-or-hearing observers are given: normal hearing, conductive hearing loss, degenerative hearing loss, noise-induced hearing loss, otosclerosis and Menière's disease. The resulting tuning curve data indicate that the frequency resolving power of the four group

Masking level difference: another tool for the evaluation of peripheral and cortical defects.

Masking level difference (MLD) due to binaural unmasking was measured for speech signals (5-word meaningful sentences) masked by broad-band noise. Tests were carried out in a group of patients with unilateral cerebral lesions of vascular origin and apparently normal pure-tone audiograms (CNS patients), in a control group (normally hearing young adults) and in 5 other groups of patients (conductive symmetrical hearing loss, conductive asymmetrical hearing loss, bilateral presbyacusis, unilateral sudden deafness, Menière's disease). Testing pattern implied three or more S/N ratios in the listeni

Impact of ethanol on odor detection thresholds relevant to No- and Low-Alcohol (NoLo) wines: a combined sensory and computational approach in simplified static hydroalcoholic model wine.

The effect of ethanol on odor detection thresholds (ODTs) in fully and partially dealcoholized (NoLo) wines remains largely unexplored. This study used a combined sensory and thermodynamic approach in simplified static hydroalcoholic wine model systems at 0, 6, and 12 % v/v ethanol with three aroma compounds. Orthonasal ODTs were measured using a 3-AFC ascending method. NRTL-based thermodynamic modeling was used to derive a volatility enhancement factor (VEF), defined as the volatility ratio between ethanol levels, and to estimate headspace concentrations at ODT. ODTs were significantly increa

Scotopic sensitivity/Irlen syndrome and the use of coloured filters: a long-term placebo controlled and masked study of reading achievement and perception of ability.

This study investigated the effects of using coloured filters on reading speed, accuracy, and comprehension as well as on perception of academic ability. A double-masked, placebo-controlled crossover design was used, with subjects being assessed over a period of 20 mo. There were three treatment groups (Placebo filters, Blue filters, and Optimal filters) involving 113 subjects with "reading difficulties", ranging in age from 9.2 yr. to 13.1 yr. and with an average discrepancy between chronological age and reading age of 1.8 yr. The 35 controls (who did not use coloured filters) ranged in age f
