Cognitive and emotional effects of carotid stenosis.

PRINCIPLES: Patients with carotid artery stenosis (CAS) are at risk of ipsilateral stroke and chronic compromise of cerebral blood flow. It is under debate whether the hypo-perfusion or embolism in CAS is directly related to cognitive impairment. Alternatively, CAS may be a marker for underlying risk factors, which themselves influence cognition. We aimed to determine cognitive performance level and the emotional state of patients with CAS. We hypothesised that patients with high grade stenosis, bilateral stenosis, symptomatic patients and/or those with relevant risk factors would suffer impai

Depersonalization/derealization during acute social stress in social phobia.

The present study aimed at investigating how frequently and intensely depersonalization/derealization symptoms occur during a stressful performance situation in social phobia patients vs. healthy controls, as well as testing hypotheses about the psychological predictors and consequences of such symptoms. N=54 patients with social phobia and N=34 control participants without mental disorders were examined prior to, during, and after a standardized social performance situation (Trier Social Stress Test, TSST). An adapted version of the Cambridge Depersonalization Scale was applied along with mea

Alteration learning in social anxiety disorder: an fMRI study.

The present study attempts to challenge the orbitofrontal cortex by using a learning paradigm which is specifically subserved by this cortical region. We implemented a version of alternation learning specifically designed for fMRI and assessed the cognitive performance and fMRI response in wide range of social anxiety disorder (SAD) severity (n=15). The main regions that were activated by the alternation learning task included portions of frontal and orbitofrontal cortex as well as the calcarine fissure. Correlations between brain activation and performance of the alternation learning task wer

Childhood Language Disorder and Social Anxiety in Early Adulthood.

Language disorder is associated with anxiety and with social problems in childhood and adolescence. However, the relation between language disorder and adult social anxiety is not well known. This study examines social anxiety in early adulthood in a 26-year prospective longitudinal study following individuals identified with a communication disorder at age 5 and a control group. Social anxiety diagnoses and subthreshold symptoms were examined at ages 19, 25, and 31 using a structured diagnostic interview; social anxiety symptoms related to social interaction and social performance were also a

Focused Attention Meditation as a Pre-Exercise Strategy for Reducing Anxiety in Speed Skaters.

Anxiety is a common psychological challenge among athletes, particularly in response to intense training sessions. This randomized crossover study investigated the immediate effects of a single session of focused attention meditation on anxiety, autonomic responses, and performance during high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) in twenty-six university-level speed skaters. Participants completed three pre-exercise interventions (focused attention meditation, controlled breathing, and random thinking) on separate occasions in a randomized order. Following each intervention, participants per

Arithmetic and reading skills mediate the link between math and reading anxiety and word problem solving.

Children's ability to solve arithmetic word problems (AWP), which require integrating mathematical and linguistic information, has been associated with academic achievement and future life outcomes. AWPs demand numerical cognition, literacy skills, and emotional factors such as math anxiety (MA) and reading anxiety (RA) may further be related to performance by disrupting these foundational abilities. This study examined the pathways through which MA and RA are associated with AWP performance among 717 third-grade students, using a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. MA showed negative

Simple arithmetic: not so simple for highly math anxious individuals.

Fluency with simple arithmetic, typically achieved in early elementary school, is thought to be one of the building blocks of mathematical competence. Behavioral studies with adults indicate that math anxiety (feelings of tension or apprehension about math) is associated with poor performance on cognitively demanding math problems. However, it remains unclear whether there are fundamental differences in how high and low math anxious individuals approach overlearned simple arithmetic problems that are less reliant on cognitive control. The current study used functional magnetic resonance imagin

Correlates of separation anxiety symptoms among first-semester college students: an exploratory study.

Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) is rarely considered in college students with anxious symptomatology, but a growing body of evidence suggests that its symptoms are experienced by a significant number of young adults. The authors examined separation anxiety symptoms in a group of first-semester college students living on campus and experiencing extended separation from significant others, generally for the first time. They examined prevalence of separation anxiety symptoms among college students and the relationship between separation anxiety symptoms and students' educational decisions and p

Error-related brain activity and anxiety symptoms in youth with autism spectrum disorder.

UNLABELLED: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience symptoms associated with generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and social anxiety disorder. In other populations, these same symptoms are associated with a larger error-related negativity (ERN), an event-related potential that reflects endogenous threat sensitivity. As such, it is possible that the ERN may relate to the clinical presentation of anxiety in ASD. However, studies examining these associations in youth with ASD have yielded mixed results. The present study aimed to clarify this relat

Sex differences in the burying behavior test in middle-aged rats: effects of diazepam.

The full behavioral profile displayed during the burying behavior test was studied in middle aged (11-14 months) males, females with irregular estrous cycles, and females in persistent diestrus, with and without diazepam (0.5-2.0mg/kg). Ambulation and motor coordination were also tested to discern behavioral changes from general motor alterations. Without diazepam treatment, middle-aged males showed longer burying behavior latencies, more prod explorations and less freezing than both groups of females. Untreated middle aged males also showed less cumulative burying and more immobility compared

Aversive eye gaze during a speech in virtual environment in patients with social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: One of the main characteristics of social anxiety disorder is excessive fear of social evaluation. In such situations, anxiety can influence gaze behaviour. Thus, the current study adopted virtual reality to examine eye gaze pattern of social anxiety disorder patients while presenting different types of speeches. METHODS: A total of 79 social anxiety disorder patients and 51 healthy controls presented prepared speeches on general topics and impromptu speeches on self-related topics to a virtual audience while their eye gaze was recorded. Their presentation performance was also eval

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mental health problem is a rising public health concern. People of all ages, specially Bangladeshi university students, are more affected by this burden. Thus, the objective of the study was to use tree-based machine learning (ML) models to identify major risk factors and predict anxiety, depression, and insomnia in university students. METHODS: A social media-based cross-sectional survey was employed for data collection. We used Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI-7) scale for measuring students' anx

Social phobia is individualized in international classifications only since 1980 with the DSM III, ten years after the publication by Marks … rtenberg has described several forms of social anxiety under the generic term of shyness (timidity, performance anxiety, personality disorders, etc.). Then, there is a relative silent period until 1960 even if the names of Kontaktneurosen or social neurosis are punctually mentioned in british and german literatures, and if Morita, in Japan, has taken an interest in s …

What Can Affect Competition Anxiety in Athletes? The Role of Self-Compassion and Repetitive Negative Thinking.

Identifying the correlates of competition anxiety is fundamental to athletes' well-being and performance. Self-compassion is gaining attention in sport psychology because of its associations with positive outcomes, while repetitive negative thinking (i.e. worry and rumination) is associated with negative conditions, such as anxiety. Building on previous evidence in the general population of associations between self-compassion, repetitive negative thinking, and trait anxiety, we investigated these relations in athletes of different sports. A total of 263 athletes (Mage = 23.72, SD = 6.97, 141

Test of an hypothesized structural model of the relationships between cognitive style and social anxiety: a 12-month prospective study.

The aim of this study was to test whether social looming cognitive style accounts for the predictive association between early maladaptive schema domains and social anxiety. We predicted that early maladaptive schema domains would predict the increase of social anxiety over time and that social looming would act as a mediator between schema domains and social anxiety. A three-wave longitudinal design was used. The participants (N=471, 56.95% women) were Spanish adolescents and young adults aged between 16 and 25 years old (Mage=17.81, SD age=3.19). The results showed that three schema domains

Influence of personality traits on neuropsychological test performance in toxic encephalopathy cases and healthy referent subjects.

The relationship between personality traits and cognitive performance was studied in two groups: men with symptoms and neuropsychological test results compatible with toxic encephalopathy (TE) and demographically similar healthy men (N=57 per group). Personality traits were assessed with the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP). The neuropsychological examination included 13 tests covering various functional domains. The TE group displayed elevated scores on all three KSP anxiety scales as well as an elevated impulsiveness score. Furthermore, the TE group had a lower score on the socializati

Claustrophobic fear behavior: a test of the expectancy model of fear.

The present study examined Reiss and McNally's expectancy model in the prediction of claustrophobic fear, measured across three domains. Non-clinical subjects (N = 117) reporting claustrophobic concerns were administered a behavioral approach test to a claustrophobic chamber. Consistent with the expectancy model, danger expectancy, anxiety expectancy and the interaction of anxiety sensitivity and anxiety expectancy accounted for unique portions of behavioral performance, with other variables partialled out. The expectancy model variable set, however, did not meaningfully relate to subjective f
